Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This U.S. sport has 43 participants racing to the finish line, and is always really loud. What sport features such names as Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and Richard Petty?

Answer: NASCAR

The first sanctioned NASCAR race was held in June of 1949 in Charlotte, North Carolina. NASCAR stands for National Association for Stock Car Automobile Racing. NASCAR has one of the longest seasons in all of sports, stretching from February to November.

2. AMERICAN FOOTBALL- Who was the most successful coach of the Dallas Cowboys, from 1960 to 1988? He was also known for his ever present fedora.

Answer: Tom Landry

Born September 11th 1924, he was appointed Dallas' head coach in 1960. He led the Cowboys to 20 consecutive winning seasons as well as three of four Super Bowl wins. He died on February 12th, 2000.

3. This sport can be played singly, in pairs, and even as dance. It used to be strictly a winter sport but can now be done all year round. Which sport?

Answer: Figure skating

It is absolutely amazing to me the way figure skating has developed and evolved over the years. If you look at old clips of Sonja Henie, Dick Button, and even Peggy Fleming (all considered "tops" in their day), their routines cannot hold a candle to today's performances. It used to be that a double jump would win honors. Today, a skater who doesn't have triple jumps is not competitive on a world level. There are even skaters successfully landing quadruple jumps! Astounding!
Question submitted by kimbwitchn from North Carolina USA.
4. This sport involves roughly 200 competitors that take part in teams. It is held every year in July. What sporting event is this?

Answer: Tour De France

I am a Tour fanatic and have been watching it for many years. As mentioned in my choices, there are other races I love to watch, as well as many one day events. It should be noted that these races can be very dangerous and sadly, fatal to some.
Question submitted by Ankhsunamun1 from Scotland.
5. What sport involves hurling a heavy ball down an alley trying to get a strike?

Answer: Bowling

Artifacts of balls dating as far back as 5000 years ago were found in Egypt showing how old this pastime is. I enjoy the fact that it is a leisurely game where you don't have to be athletic to do. The Egyptians sure knew how to have fun!
Question submitted by CindyK41.
6. This sport is commonly known as 'America's pastime' and it involves running bases and hitting a little white ball. What sport is this?

Answer: Baseball

Baseball is regarded as America's pastime. The origin of baseball has been highly questioned about and, in truth, the game evolved over many decades, if not centuries, and its roots are, in reality, a tangled web of bat and ball games brought to this country by immigrants. My favorite team are the Detroit Tigers, a Major League Baseball powerhouse. Go Tigers!

7. This sport consists of two opposing teams, a field as big as a cricket ground, a small group of umpires, two sets of goal posts and a leather ball. It's played in a stadium in front of large crowds. Which sport am I describing?

Answer: Australian Rules football

The Australian Football League (AFL) was founded in 1897 and started with only six teams. There are now eighteen teams spread across five Australian states. It's my country's most attended sport with an average 34,000 people per game.
Question submitted by ElusiveDream. While I don't play this sport, I enjoy watching it.
8. This sport has three varieties -- the one I love is the "speediest" of the three, which is the most competitive form of this sport. It is played by men, women, and co-ed teams, though women seem to play it the most. It became very popular in the USA in the 1930s and 40s. It's played with a ball that is usually 12 inches in circumference and a clublike item used to address the ball. What is this sport?

Answer: Fast pitch softball

The other varieties are modified fast pitch and slow pitch. Helmets must be worn to play fast pitch. Fast pitch rules are similar to baseball, with exceptions such as players not being allowed to "lead off" -- it's against the rules to leave a base until the ball has been pitched. It's a fast-paced game that is exciting and fun both to watch and to play! (Information from Wikipedia.)
Question submitted by Grymmycat from the USA. I love fast pitch softball.
9. This sport originated in North America and was played by many Indian tribes, who each had their own respective variation of the game. This sport involves a ball and a stick. What is it?

Answer: Lacrosse

Lacrosse was given its name by early French settlers, using the generic term for any game played with a curved stick (crosse) and a ball. The main objective of lacrosse is to score as many goals in the opposing team's net during the timed match. The lacrosse stick consists of a long handled stick with a head at the top made of netting that is designed to catch, throw or pass the ball around. Today lacrosse is played by many collegiate athletic teams and there is even a league devoted to professional lacrosse aptly named Major League Lacrosse.

10. The most prestigious U.S. horse racing event is run during May and June every year and involves winning three specific events. What is the name of the award given to a horse that wins the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes?

Answer: Triple Crown

The Triple Crown is one of the top feats in all of the sporting world. Many horses and jockeys have come up short usually winning the Derby and the Preakness, before faltering in third leg, the Belmont, the longest of the three races at 1½ miles (2.4 km). The horses that did win the Triple Crown live forever in history. Seattle Slew (1977), Secretariat (1973), Whirlaway (1941), and Citation (1948) are just a few of the horses that have achieved immortality.
