Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Manchester United

Answer: Red

Red is a powerful colour not only because it quickly captures an observer's attention, but it evokes many physical and psychological responses such as increased heart rate and raised blood pressure. Red can be a highly influential colour when used appropriately. On a positive note, it elicits emotions of power, intensity, passion, excitement, courage, assertiveness, and confidence but it can also represent anger, aggression, violence, and brutality. Whether it was a conscious decision for sporting teams to adopt red uniforms to achieve a competitive advantage is debatable. What is a fact is that more sporting teams have red as their main colour than any other colour

Manchester United FC is a football club based at Old Trafford in Manchester, England. The club competes in the Premier League in the English football league system. It is one of the most successful sporting teams in the world: Manchester United is one of the most widely supported football clubs in the world and was the highest-earning football club in the world in 2016-17.

The team was founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878 but changed its name to Manchester United in 1902. With the name change came a change of uniform (from green and yellow). The new strip comprised red shirts, white shorts, and black socks, which became the standard Manchester United home kit. There have been only minor changes in the first 120 years of its existence.

For such a traditional club, the team nickname of the Red Devils is surprisingly recent in its adoption. After WWII, Matt Busby, a popular manager, trained the squad into trophy winners in a few short seasons. The team was popularly referred to as the "Busby Babes". In 1958 the team was on a flight in Munich which crashed killing 23 people including eight players. Busby rebuilt the team mainly with young inexperienced players but the Busby Babes moniker was a painful memory. A local rugby club, Salford, officially nicknamed the Reds (because of their uniform colour) played at Old Trafford soon after Munich. He liked the more intimidating imagery of the "Red Devil" over the innocent-sounding "Busby Babes" and so he began to associate the name with Manchester United. The name became official in 1968.
2. Pittsburgh Steelers

Answer: Not Red

The Pittsburgh Steelers joined the NFL in 1933 as the Pittsburgh Pirates, from the baseball team of the same name. This makes the Steelers the seventh-oldest franchise in the NFL, and the oldest franchise in the American Football Conference. They changed their name to the Pittsburgh Steelers before the 1940 season. Their history can be divided into two parts: Before the 1970 pre-merger NFL, they were very unsuccessful but were very successful afterwards - They were the first team to win six Super Bowls.

Their uniform has always been the same colours: Black and gold taken from the city's colours. (There was an exception in the 1943 season, during WWII when they merged with the Philadelphia Eagles to form the "Steagles"). The main strip is predominantly black shirts with gold pants and a black helmet. The Steelers were one of the first NFL team to have a logo on their helmet. Like most teams they have an 'Away' uniform that is predominantly a white shirt (with black and gold highlights) but with the gold pants retained. Pittsburgh is unique in that all three of the major sporting teams from the city including the Pittsburgh Pirates (MLB) and the Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL) all have black and gold for their team colours.
3. Ferrari Racing Team

Answer: Red

The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA; English: International Automobile Federation) decreed between the wars that there would be a recommendation that there would be an international colour scheme for racing cars. French cars were blue (Bleu de France), British cars were green (British racing green), and Italian were rosso corsa (racing red).

While Ferrari has always been associated with red cars so were other Italian manufacturers Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Lancia, and Abarth. Ferrari was actually the last manufacturer to adopt the red colour scheme as they did not start building cars until 1947. However, they became the only Italian manufacturer to continue competitive racing

Scuderia Ferrari is the racing division of luxury Italian auto manufacturer Ferrari. It is most well-known in Formula One racing. It has also won the World Sportscar Championship, 24 Hours of Le Mans, 24 Hours of Spa, 24 Hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring, and the Bathurst 12 Hour, (All Grand Tourer car races). The team has also won road courses of the Targa Florio, the Mille Miglia, and the Carrera Panamericana.

Perhaps because of its successful racing history, red is by far the most popular colour for non-racing Ferraris bought and driven by "Joe Public".
4. Kansas City Chiefs

Answer: Red

The Kansas City Chiefs, founded as the Dallas Texans, were a charter member of the American Football League in 1960. In 1963, the team relocated to Kansas City and became the Chiefs and joined the NFL in 1970 when the two leagues merged. It won its first Super Bowl in 1969.

The uniform has remained largely unchanged since the club's inception. The "home" uniform is a red jersey with white pants and white letting. The "away" uniform is the reverse of the main uniform. Gold is used as trim on the sleeves and pants of both uniforms. The Chiefs have no specific "alternate" uniform like most other NFL clubs but they do have an all-red kit they use on occasion. They have also been known to wear their white kit on occasion at home as well.
5. Chelsea FC

Answer: Not Red

Chelsea FC is one of several London teams that play in the Premier League. In 2018, when they won their eighth FA Cup, they had also won six national championships winning five times between 2004-2017. They were the first English club and the fourth club in history to have won the "European Treble": European Cup/UEFA Champions League, European Cup Winners' Cup/UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, and UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League. In 2022 they won their first FIFA Club World Cup title.

The Blues, named after their uniform colour, were formed in 1905. They have always worn blue jerseys though initially, they were paler being eton blue, which were the racing colours of then club president, Earl Cadogan. In 1912 they were changed to Royal blue. The white shorts were changed to royal blue shorts in 1964, which made this a unique combination in the English leagues. They have had many away kits including all-yellow, all black and red and white diamonds.
6. New York Yankees

Answer: Not Red

The New York Yankees are one of the most successful Major League Baseball teams in the US. In 2009 they won their 40th American League pennant and their 27th World Series. The team was formed in 1903 and their home was built on one of the highest parts of Manhattan between 165th and 168th Street and it was thought this was why they adopted the name The Highlanders (Another theory was that it was a hat-tip to the team president Joseph Gordon's Scottish heritage as the Gordon Highlanders were a famous Scottish military unit}. In 1904, a "New York Press" Sports Editor called Jim Price started calling the team the Yankees as it was easier to fit the smaller name in headlines! The name became official in 1913.

The official colours of the Yankees are midnight navy blue and white. The home uniform is white with navy pinstripes. The away uniform, like most MLB teams, is grey. A navy blue cap is worn. A distinctive logo with interlocking "N" and "Y" features on both uniforms, on the chest of the home uniform and on the cap.
7. Spain national football team

Answer: Red

In 2010 Spain's national football (soccer) team became one of the best in the world when it became the eighth team to win the World Cup after competing in 16 of 22 World Cup competitions. In 2012 it won its third European Championship (others in 1964 and 2008) and won the UEFA Nations League (commenced in 2018) in 2023 to become the second team, after France, to win all three major titles.

As the team is known as "La Furia Roja" (Red Fury), Spain has traditionally worn a "home" jersey of red with gold trim and lettering. The team is also known unofficially as "Los Toros" (Fighting Bulls). Their away kit has traditionally been all white but in 2022 they switched to a light blue kit.
8. Australia women's national soccer team (The Matildas)

Answer: Not Red

The Australian Women's Soccer Association (AWSA) was founded in 1974 and competed at the 1975 AFC Women's Championship (The Asian Cup) where they placed third. Like most national Australian sporting teams, the Matildas wear green and gold as their "home" colours with a gold jersey being prominent.

The away kit is predominantly blue (drawing "inspiration from the vivid sea") with gold trim. Their nickname comes from the Australian folk song "Waltzing Matilda". Their greatest achievements came in 2023 when they co-hosted the Women's World Cup with New Zealand.

Whilst seeded 10th, they punched above their weight reaching the semi-finals, beating fancied opponents Canada, Denmark and France along the way before losing to England.
9. Juventus FC

Answer: Not Red

Juventus Football Club is an Italian professional football club based in Turin, in northern Italy, that competes in the Serie A, the top division of the Italian football league system. In the 2019-20 season when the club won its 36th official league title, it had also won 14 Coppa Italia trophies and nine Italian Super Cups, more than any other Italian club; it had also won two Intercontinental Cups, two European Cup / UEFA Champions Leagues, one European Cup Winners' Cup, three UEFA Cups, and two UEFA Super Cups.

The club was founded in 1897 and played in pink shirts with a black tie. By 1903, they had faded so much they needed replacing. The club asked English team member John Savage if he knew anyone in England who could supply hardier new shirts in a colour that would not fade. Savage contacted a colleague Nottingham, who was a Notts County supporter, so he shipped out their black and white striped shirts to the club who have worn them ever since. As such the team's nickname is Le Zebre (The Zebras). However, the team is generally known as La Vecchia Signora (The Old Lady).
10. San Francisco 49ers

Answer: Red

The San Francisco 49ers was founded and became a charter member of the All-America Football Conference in 1946, then joined the NFL in 1949 when the two leagues merged. Between 1981 and 1994 the 49ers won five Super Bowl championships.

The principal colour in the 49ers uniforms has always been red. At first, they wore dark red (cardinal red) jerseys but switched to scarlet red, with gold pants in 1948. In 1949 when they joined the NFL they added three white stripes to their shirt sleeves. Over the years they have experimented with different coloured helmets, pants and socks but they have always retained the red jersey (for their away games, like most NFL teams, they wear a white jersey, but with red lettering, collar trim and sleeve stripes).
11. Liverpool FC

Answer: Red

Liverpool FC is one of the most supported and most valuable sporting clubs in the world today. When it was the UK's first winner of the FIFA Club World Cup, it had already won nineteen league titles, eight FA Cups, ten League Cups, six European Cups, three UEFA Cups, and four UEFA Super Cups.

The club was formed in 1892 and adopted blue and white quartered shirts but quickly changed to the city of Liverpool's colour of red in 1896. Liverpool wore red shirts and white shorts until 1964 when manager Bill Shankly changed to an all-red strip including red socks. Their away strip, not often used, was all yellow or white shirts and black shorts with some single-season exceptions.
12. Los Angeles Lakers

Answer: Not Red

The Los Angeles Lakers are a US basketball team that competes in the National Basketball Association. They are one of the most successful NBA sides: In 2020 they won the NBA title for the 17th time to match the Boston Celtics. At that point, no other NBA side had won more than six titles.

The Lakers were originally from Minnesota where the team wore powder blue and gold uniforms. These were retained when the team moved to Los Angeles in 1960 but were changed to purple and gold in 1967. There have been variations on these two colours (with white also introduced) to have gold 'home' shirts and purple 'away shirts'. In the 2017/18 season, the home and away shirts were abandoned. Instead, the Lakers' predominantly white jersey (with purple and gold highlights) became the team's "Association" jersey (every NBA team has a white jersey), the gold jersey became the "Icon" jersey, and the purple became a "Statement" jersey (each NBA team has a statement jersey).
