Answer: 1924 Princeton, Indiana

He was the middle child. He had two siblings.
2. In which branch of the military did Hodges serve in World War II?

Answer: U.S. Marine Corps

Hodges was an anti air craft gunner. He was awarded a Bronze Star for valor in combat for actions at Tinian and Okinawa.
3. Hodges spent his career as a first baseman. Did he always play that position?

Answer: No

Hodges was originally signed by the Dodgers as a third baseman. When he returned in 1947 from the service after WW2 he became a catcher. He was moved to first to accomodate Roy Campanella (who joined the Dodgers in 1948) as the starting catcher.
4. On August 31, 1950 Gil Hodges had a memorable day. What was so special about that day?

Answer: Hit 4 home runs off 4 different pitchers.

He hit those four without the benefit of extra innings.The Dodgers beat the Boston Braves 19-3.
5. Hodges did not finish his career as a Dodger, why not?

Answer: He was taken by the New York Mets in the 1961 expansion draft.

The Los Angeles Dodgers did not protect Hodges in the expansion draft. He played only 65 games in two years with the Mets and was traded to Washington Senators. Upon completion of the trade Hodges retired so he could be the manager of the Senators.
6. Did the Dodgers retire the number 14 worn buy Hodges?

Answer: No

It is interesting that the Mets thought enough of Hodges to retire his number 14 in 1973.
