Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the undersized center on the Washington Bullets team that won the 1978 NBA Championship?

Answer: Wes Unseld

It was 6'7", 245-pound Wes Unseld who banged his way to the top in 1978, when Washington beat the Seattle Supersonics in the NBA Finals. Elvin Hayes was the power forward on the same team. Jack Sikma played center for Seattle in the series, and Bellamy played for several teams, but was retired by 1978.
2. Who was the first center to lead the NBA in assists for a season?

Answer: Wilt Chamberlain

While playing with the Philadelphia 76ers, the high-scoring Chamberlain recreated himself and became the greatest passing center ever. In fact, in 1967-68, he led the league in total assists, being the only 20th century center to do so. He finished third in 1966-67, when the Sixers won the NBA Championship.
3. Who was the starting center on the Chicago Bulls 1991-1992 roster?

Answer: Bill Cartwright

Remember the tall, tired-looking old man with the gray goatee? It was Bill Cartwright, number 24. He didn't score or rebound, nor did he block shots, but he was there alright.
4. Who was the intense, nasty center on the Detroit Pistons Bad Boy team of the late eighties and early nineties, who wore number 40?

Answer: Bill Laimbeer

Laimbeer busted quite a few chops in his day. Even Robert Parish, the calm, quiet Celtics center had lowered himself to hitting Laimbeer in the face, after receiving several elbows from the infamous Motor City Bad Boy.
5. Who never wore jersey number 33?

Answer: Bill Walton

Bill Walton never wore number 33. He wore number 32 for most of his career, but when he played with the Boston Celtics in the mid-eighties, he wore number 5.
6. In the 1960s, three centers managed to pull down 40 or more rebounds in a game. Two of them of course were Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain. Who was the other?

Answer: Nate Thurmond

The great Thurmond of the Warriors, once had 42 rebounds in a 1965 game against the Pistons. Power forward Jerry Lucas is the only non-center to reach 40. Bellamy and Malone never had 40, nor did anyone as of April 2004.
7. Who was the starting center for the Boston Celtics before Bill Russell joined the team in 1956?

Answer: Ed Macauley

Macauley was a 6'8", 185-pound center, who was one of the NBA's leading scorers in the 1950s. It's interesting to think how little he could have done in today's NBA as a center with his skinny posture.
8. Bill Russell was the first seven foot (7'0") center to play in the NBA.

Answer: False

Walter Dukes was the first 7'0" center to play in the NBA. Russell was 6'9". This was a normal size for a center at the time. When Wilt Chamberlain, all 7'1", 275 pounds of him, entered the league in 1959, his size and strength shocked both opponents and fans.
9. Bill Walton and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Lew Alcindor) attended the same college. Do you know which one?

Answer: UCLA

Both Abdul-Jabbar and Walton attended UCLA, where they were part of Coach John Wooden's basketball legacy. Wooden coached the UCLA basketball team to seven consecutive championships.
10. Wilt Chamberlain's jersey number 13 was retired by three NBA teams.

Answer: True

Chamberlain's lucky 13 was retired by the Golden State Warriors, the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Los Angeles Lakers.
