Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which slugger set an American League record by hitting 37 home runs before an All-Star break?

Answer: Reggie Jackson

Jackson hit 37 by the break with Oakland in 1969. Strangely enough, he would finish the season with only 47, a career high. The Twins' Harmon Killebrew won the home run crown in 1969 with 49 big ones.
2. When Major League Baseball began in 1901, the American League had to wait four seasons before they would experience their first perfect game. In what season did the National League see their first after the two leagues combined?

Answer: 1964

The National League waited until the sixth decade in 1964, when Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Jim Bunning threw his perfecto. His June 21st perfect game was a 6-0 win over the Mets. The following season, Dodger Sandy Koufax would throw one against the Cubs. The American League's first perfect game was thrown by Cy Young in 1904 with the Boston Americans.
3. Who was the first rookie pitcher in the National League to throw a no-hitter?

Answer: Christy Mathewson

The others all threw no-hitters as rookies, but Blue and Holloman were American Leaguers. Mathewson played his entire career for the New York Giants except for one game. On July 15, 1901, Christy threw his no-no against the Cardinals. He would thrown another one in 1905 against the Cubs.
4. When a batter hits for the cycle, it means that they had a single, double, triple, and home run in the same game. Who was the first American League player to bat for a natural cycle, getting all those hits in order?

Answer: Bob Fothergill

The others all hit for the cycle, but not a natural one. Fothergill played from 1922-1933, mostly for the Tigers. He accomplished this on September 26, 1926. Bob batted .367 in the season.

First in the National League was Bill Collins playing for Boston on October 6, 1910 (Boston Doves vs. Philadelphia Phillies).
5. In 100 seasons of American League Baseball, how many four home run games were hit by a player?

Answer: 3

Yankee Lou Gehrig was the first to do it in 1932. Pat Seerey was next in 1948 with the White Sox. Rocky Colavito was the third in 1959 with the Indians. During the same time frame, seven National League sluggers hit four home runs in one game.
6. Former Braves slugger Eddie Mathews reached a major milestone as an Astro when he hit his 500th home run. Hank Aaron of the Braves reached his milestone when he hit his 500th, then another later when he hit his 600th home run. Which team allowed all these three milestones to take place?

Answer: San Francisco Giants

Mathews' 500th came off Juan Marichal on July 14, 1967. Aaron smacked his 500th, one year later to the day on July 14 off pitcher Mike McCormick. Hank's 600th was dished up by Gaylord Perry on April 27, 1971.
7. Joe DiMaggio set an American League record in 1941 by having a 56-game hitting streak with the Yankees. Whose American League record did DiMaggio break?

Answer: George Sisler

One of few highlights for the St. Louis Browns franchise was Sisler. In 1922, George came close to a Triple Crown, but settled for the AL MVP. During the season, he had a 41-game hitting streak, breaking Ty Cobb's record of 40 from 1911. Willie Keeler set a National League record with the Baltimore Orioles in 1897 with 45. Cincinnati's Pete Rose fell one game shy of tying Keeler's record in 1978.
8. The great Willie Mays was a rookie Giant in 1951. Which uniform number did he begin his career with?

Answer: 14

Mays was given the number 14, but later changed to 24 in his rookie season. It didn't matter to him as he won the Rookie of the Year Award. Willie went on to win two NL MVPs and hit 660 career home runs.
9. Who was the first National League player to hit a grand slam in a World Series?

Answer: Chuck Hiller

Hiller was a San Francisco Giant in 1962 when they went up against the Yankees in the promised land. His seventh inning game four shot was hit off Marshall Bridges in a 7-3 Giants win. San Francisco would lose the World Series four games to three.
10. Which of these pitchers threw a no-hitter, and won the game 10-1?

Answer: Dazzy Vance

On September 13, 1925, the Dodgers went up against the Phillies. The Phillies scored their only run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly. Vance went 22-8 in the season. He won the NL MVP after throwing a Triple Crown in the previous season also.
