Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The great Boston Red Sox outfielder Carl Yastrzemski went to two World Series throughout his career. Which team did he begin his Major League career with in 1961?

Answer: Red Sox

Yaz played his entire 23-season career wearing the #8 with the Red Sox. His rookie season in 1961 saw teammate and pitcher Don Schwall win the Rookie of the Year award. Carl's two World Series resulted in losses in both 1967 and 1975. Boston's trip to the 1967 World Series was a result of Yastrzemski winning the AL Triple Crown award and the MVP. He was a 1989 hall inductee.
2. Slugger Sammy Sosa began his career with which team?

Answer: Texas Rangers

After only 25 games in a Rangers' uniform in 1989, Sammy was traded to the White Sox for Harold Baines and Fred Manrique. 1992 saw Sosa pack his bags again, this time across the tracks to the Cubs for George Bell. In 1998, Sammy hit 66 home runs and won the NL MVP, but it was all overshadowed by Mark McGwire's 70 home run season. After the 2004 season, Sosa moved to Baltimore.
3. From 1965-1972, the Los Angeles Dodgers saw the familiar #23 on the back of Claude Osteen, who pitched his way to two World Series. Which team did he begin his career with?

Answer: Cincinnati Reds

Osteen debuted in 1957 as a 17-year old. He was used sparingly until he was traded to the Senators in mid-season 1961. Unfortunately, he missed tagging along with the Reds to the World Series in that season. From the Senators to the Dodgers, he brought along Frank Howard, Ken McMullen, and Phil Ortega, all key players that helped the Dodgers to the 1965 World Series. Osteen retired in 1975 with 196 wins in a White Sox uniform.
4. This 2002 Cy Young and Triple Crown winner, pitched only 11 games for a team who gave him his first chance. Which team regretted letting Randy Johnson go?

Answer: Montreal Expos

Mid-season 1989, the Expos traded Randy to the Mariners where he spent nine seasons and won a Cy Young award. 1999 saw him in Arizona, and went on to win four consecutive Cy Young awards.
5. The great Ryan Express, Nolan Ryan, played with four teams throughout his illustrious career. Which team gave him his first chance?

Answer: New York Mets

Ryan played for all these teams, but spent his first five seasons with the Mets. In 1972, the 25-year old right-hander was with the Angels and popped for 329 strikeouts. The following season, Nolan broke Sandy Koufax's 382 season strikeout record by fanning 383.

After 27 seasons, Ryan retired in 1993 with 329 wins along with a career-leading 5714 strikeouts. The hall opened its doors to Nolan in 1999.
6. The great Frank Robinson won a bevy of awards throughout his career. To his credit, he won the NL Rookie of the Year, NL MVP, AL MVP, AL Triple Crown, World Series MVP, and an all-star game MVP. Which team did he begin his terror with?

Answer: Cincinnati Reds

Robinson played for all these teams, but began in 1957 with the Reds and won the Rookie of the Year award. After hitting 33 home runs with the Reds in 1965, he packed his bags for Baltimore and then hit a career high 49 in 1966, winning the Triple Crown. Frank was a 1982 Hall of Fame inductee.
7. Which National League team gave a 23-year old by the name of Denton Young, a chance to earn his nickname of Cy?

Answer: Cleveland Spiders

1890 was a historical year in baseball. Although Young appeared in only 17 games and went 9-7, he went on to win 502 more in his great career. After nine seasons in Cleveland, he played with the Cardinals for two seasons before being a part of the new American League in 1901 with the Red Sox.

He won a Triple Crown for Boston in 1901. He retired after 22 seasons in 1911. He made it into the Hall of Fame in its second year of voting in 1937.
8. 2004 World Series MVP Manny Ramirez, began his career with which team in 1993?

Answer: Cleveland Indians

After eight seasons with the Indians, Manny signed as a free agent with the Red Sox in December 2000. 2004 ended a World Series drought for the Red Sox who defeated the Cardinals four games to none. Ramirez batted .412 to earn the series MVP.
9. Ernie Banks, more commonly known as Mr. Cub, began his Major League career with which team?

Answer: Cubs

Banks was a career Cub. Beginning in 1953, the shortstop began a loyal Chicago career which saw a 1958 and 1959 MVP award. Sadly enough, the 11-time all-star never saw a World Series game with the Cubs. He banged out 512 home runs in his great career.
10. Who gave the Sultan of Swat, Babe Ruth, his first Major League uniform?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

In a storied career, Ruth began his Major League run in 1914 as a pitcher with the Red Sox. He made four of his five rookie appearances on the mound. 1919 saw a historical transaction as the Babe was sent to the Yankees. He stayed in New York until the 1934 season, then retired as a Boston Brave with 714 career home runs in 1935.
