Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A record was set in the National League by the Cleveland Spiders in 1899 for losing 134 games in a season. Which American League team set their league record when they lost 119 games in 2003?

Answer: Tigers

The Tigers went a dismal 43-119 under the management of Alan Trammell. Pitcher Mike Maroth "led" the team with nine wins, but also lost 20 in the process. The Tigers kept Trammell on for two more seasons before he was canned. Jim Leyland took over the team in 2006 and took the Tigers to the World Series in his first season, but lost to the Cardinals in the big one.
2. In the 1960s, which team set a record for throwing four no-hitters in four consecutive seasons?

Answer: Dodgers

All four no-hitters belonged to Dodger pitcher Sandy Koufax, and his fourth no-hitter was a perfect game in 1965 against the Cubs.
3. Which team in 1996 set an American League record with their batters being hit by a pitch 92 times in the season?

Answer: Toronto Blue Jays

Quite a few bruises were handed out to the Blue Jays in their 20th anniversary of the franchise. Catcher Charlie O'Brien led the team by being hit 17 times, third baseman Ed Sprague was hit 12, and John Olerud was hit another 10 times. From the mound, the Blue Jay pitchers hit 36 opposing batters of their own.
4. Which team set a Major League record by hitting 14 grand slams in the 2000 season?

Answer: Athletics

The Athletics banged out 239 home runs in the season, second in the league. Jason Giambi hit four grand slams while Ben Grieve added another three. Although winning the AL West with their bats, they still lost the ALDS to the Yankees. The Indians tied this grand slam record of 14 in 2006.
5. Which team set a Major League record by striking out 1399 times during the 2001 season?

Answer: Milwaukee Brewers

The Brewers must have gone through cases and cases of contact lenses in 2001. Jose Hernandez led the team by being struck out 185 times, followed by Richie Sexson's 178. With their 68-94 record, they broke the team record set by the Tigers in 1999. Both the Diamondbacks and the Yankees met in the World Series in 2001.
6. In 1933, the Philadelphia Athletics set a record for having accomplished which of the following in a two-week span?

Answer: Had three players hit for the cycle

Hitting for the cycle is quite rare in a game for one player, which consists of hitting a single, double, triple, and home run. The three were Mickey Cochrane, Jimmie Foxx, and Pinky Higgins. Foxx's cycle was hit with a grand slam as the home run. It was Cochrane's second cycle, as he hit his first in 1932.
7. Which American League team set a Major League record in 1996 by giving up 241 home runs in the season?

Answer: Tigers

The Tigers finished in last place as a result with their 53-109 record. Pitchers Felipe Lira dished up 30, Greg Gohr gave up 24, and Brian Williams allowed 21. The Rockies set a National League record in 2001 by giving up 230.
8. The Toronto Blue Jays set a Major League record in 1987 for doing which of the following?

Answer: Hit 10 home runs in one game

The game happened at the Blue Jays' home of Exhibition Park on September 14th. They embarrassed the Baltimore Orioles 18-3. The Oriole pitching staff allowed 21 hits in the game amongst six pitchers. No Baltimore pitcher lasted two full innings in the game.
9. Which franchise was the first in baseball history to win 10,000 games?

Answer: Giants

The Giant franchise began in 1883 as the New York Gothams before taking on the Giants' name in 1885. The Giants surpassed the 10,000-win mark in 2006. Next up were the Yankees, who closed out the 2006 season still short of the mark by 874 wins.
10. Which team set an American League record by starting the 1988 season with losing their first 21 games in a row?

Answer: Orioles

The Orioles' unfortunate streak lasted from Opening Day on April 4, and ran until April 28. The team's first victory came over the White Sox 9-0 on April 29. They finished the season with the worst AL season record at 54-107. Manager Cal Ripken Sr. was fired after the sixth game, then Frank Robinson managed the team to 101 more losses.
