Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first National League slugger to hit 40+ home runs in a season five times in his career?

Answer: Hank Aaron

Aaron was the first to go with five crowns of hitting 40+ home runs in a season and did it eight times in his career. He also set a record for hitting 30+ home runs in a season 15 times. Babe Ruth of the American League set an almost unreachable Major League record hitting 40+ home runs 11 times.
2. Who hit the first-ever World Series home run?

Answer: Jimmy Sebring

Sebring was a Pittsburgh Pirate in the first-ever World Series in 1903. He hit the first World Series home run off the great and future Hall of Famer Cy Young in the seventh inning of game one. Pittsburgh won the game 7-3, but the Boston Americans would come back and win the series five games to three. Boston pitcher Bill Dinneen would win three games in the series and Young the other two.
3. I led the league in home runs four times and was the first to do it with three different teams. Who am I?

Answer: Reggie Jackson

Jackson won his first home run title in 1973 when he hit 32 for the Athletics. He hit another 36 in 1975 with Oakland. After going to the Yankees he won the crown with his 41 in 1980, then later with the Angels in 1982 he won another title with 39. Reggie retired in 1987 after 21 seasons and hit 563 big ones. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1993 as the sole inductee.
4. Who was the first home run specialist to tie or lead his league in seven consecutive seasons?

Answer: Ralph Kiner

Kiner was a rookie in 1946 with the Pirates. He hit 23 home runs in the season and led the league. He would tie or lead the National League for another six consecutive seasons and hit 51 in 1947 and 54 in 1949. Amazingly he never won the MVP Award or was in the top three for the voting. Ralph played eight seasons with Pittsburgh, two with the Cubs, and one with the Indians.

He retired in 1955 after 10 seasons with 369 home runs. He was inducted into the Hall in 1975.
5. Which Major League team was the first in history to hit four consecutive home runs in a game?

Answer: Milwaukee Braves

It was the Braves being hosted by the Cincinnati Reds on June 8, 1961, at Crosley Field. The consecutive home runs were hit by Eddie Mathews, Hank Aaron, Joe Adcock, and Frank Thomas. All four were served on a plate by Reds pitchers Jim Maloney and Marshall Bridges in the seventh inning of the game. Amazingly enough, the Braves scored five runs in the inning but still lost the game 10-8.
6. Who was the first player in Major League history to lead both the American League and National League in home runs in separate seasons?

Answer: Sam Crawford

Crawford played for 19 seasons from 1899-1917. As a Cincinnati Red in 1901 he led the National League with 16 home runs, a fairly good amount in the early days of baseball. After joining the Detroit Tigers in 1903 and being a teammate of Ty Cobb in 1908, Sam led the American League with his seven home runs.

It would be the only time that he led the leagues in home runs. In 1914 he was runner-up AL MVP to Eddie Collins of the Athletics. From 1902-1908 Crawford was runner-up for the batting title four times. Sam was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Veteran's Committee in 1957.

He died in 1968.
7. For many decades the great Lou Gehrig held the record for hitting 23 grand slams in his career. Which of these sluggers broke his record?

Answer: Alex Rodriguez

A-Rod played for the Mariners from 1994-2000, the Rangers from 2001-2003, then the Yankees from 2004-2013. After serving a season suspension in 2014, he came back to the pinstripes for two seasons before walking away from baseball. Rodriguez hit 696 home runs during his career.

He passed the famous Gehrig on September 20, 2013 then later hit another for good measure. Strangely enough, Don Mattingly of the Yankees set a season record by hitting six in 1987, but they would be the only grand slams of his career.
8. There were five players tied for a career record of hitting 12 walk-off home runs in the 20th Century. Who came along after the millennium and set a new career record with 13?

Answer: Jim Thome

Thome played for 22 seasons from 1991-2012. Jim played for six teams during his career. In addition to setting a new career record of 13 walk-offs, he also led the league for the most strikeouts in a season three times. He retired with 2548 just shy of Reggie Jackson's 2597 career strikeouts. Thome played for the Indians, Phillies, White Sox, Twins, Dodgers, and Orioles.

The other five greats who hit 12 walk-offs in their career were Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Mantle, Stan Musial, Frank Robinson, and Babe Ruth.
9. Which slugging team was the first to hit 250 home runs in a season?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

The Orioles had the power and they showed it in 1996. They hit 257 in the season under the management of Davey Johnson. The Orioles had eight players hit home runs in double-figures led by the 50 of Brady Anderson. Baltimore still finished in second place in the AL East and by four games behind the Yankees.

They went on to the ALCS but lost to the Yankees four games to one. The Mariners would break Baltimore's record in 1997 by hitting 264.
10. Who was the first slugger in history to lead the league in home runs in a season, and do it in three different decades?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth won the home run crown in 1919 with the Red Sox. He won the title nine times in the 1920s while missing out in 1922, then won two more in 1930 and 1931. The Bambino won 11 home run crowns. Ruth topped out at 60 home runs in 1927 in the 154-game season.

He hit 714 home runs in his career and retired as a Boston Brave in 1935. Ruth was one of the five inaugural inductees into the Hall of Fame in 1936.
