Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first player in history to win three season MVP awards?

Answer: Jimmie Foxx

The others won two in their career. Jimmie Foxx won two with the Athletics in 1932 and 1933, then his third with the Boston Red Sox in 1938. Foxx also hit for the Triple Crown in 1933. Foxx missed out on the Triple Crown in 1932, batting just .003 behind Dale Alexander of the Red Sox. An easy Hall of Fame inductee in 1951, Foxx was inducted along with Mel Ott of the Giants.
2. In the 1960s, which team had the most Cy Young winners in the decade?

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

Dodger Sandy Koufax led the decade by winning three Cy Young awards, and teammate Don Drysdale also took one. The Yankees won two from Bob Turley and Whitey Ford. The Tigers won two from Denny McLain, and the Cardinals won only one from the arm of Bob Gibson.
3. When the Major Leagues began in 1901, which of the following teams changed their team name three times in the first three seasons?

Answer: Cleveland

The American League saw the Cleveland Blues join the new league in 1901. 1902 they were the Bronchos, then in 1903 the team changed their name again to the Naps. Cleveland introduced the Indian name in 1914. That 1914 team went 51-102, and were 'led' by pitcher Willie Mitchell who went 12-17.

The franchise's first World Series crown came in 1920, with a five games to two win over the Brooklyn Robins.
4. Which Major League slugger hit the most home runs in the 1930s?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

Gehrig of the Yankees hit a whopping 347 home runs in the 1930s, even with hitting none in 1939. Lou won three home run crowns in the decade also, along with winning a MVP and batting for a Triple Crown in separate seasons. Ott of the Giants won the home run crown five times in the 1930s, and was the runner-up another three times.

He hit 308 home runs in the decade. Ott retired with 511 big ones in 1947. Amazingly, Mel never won the MVP award. Ruth hit 198 in the 1930s, and Kiner did not begin his career until 1946.
5. Who was the first player in history to win seven consecutive home run crowns?

Answer: Ralph Kiner

From 1946-1952, Kiner of the Pirates ruled the National League. In 1947 and 1948, Ralph shared the award with Johnny Mize of the Giants, and in 1952, Hank Sauer of the Cubs. Kiner retired with 369 home runs after only 10 seasons. The hall took Ralph in 1975. Williams hit 323 in his first 10 seasons. In Bonds' first 10 seasons, he hit 292. The Babe hit 238.
6. The Yankees ruled the 1950s by appearing in eight World Series in the decade. What is lost in history was another team in the decade that went to five World Series also, an amazing task to accomplish. Which team was this?

Answer: Dodgers

The Yankees took the limelight by winning six of their eight series in the 1950s, including four in a row. The Dodgers were beat by the Yankees three times, then the Dodgers beat the Yankees and the White Sox to round out their fifth trip in the decade.
7. In 1963, the San Francisco Giants should have been name the Alou Giants. All three brothers played on this team in the season. Which of the three was the oldest?

Answer: Felipe

Felipe was born on May 12, 1935, was three years older than Matty, and seven years older than Jesus. They were all born in the Dominican Republic. Felipe was the only Alou to hit a home run in 1963, smacking 20 in the season. He retired with 206. Jesus hit 32 in his career, and watched Matty hit 31. Felipe became the manager of the Montreal Expos in 1992 for 10 seasons, then was a big man in San Francisco once again in 2003, helming them to a NL West flag.
8. In the first 100 seasons of Major League baseball, which National League team took the bragging rights for winning the most World Series during that century?

Answer: Cardinals

The Pirates had the best winning percentage by winning five in their seven appearances. The Dodgers appeared in 18, coming away with only six crowns. The Giants went to 16 World Series and won five. The Cardinals, who changed their name from the Perfectos to the Cardinals in 1900, won nine in their 15 appearances.

The Yankees took the bragging rights for the American League, going to 38 World Series and winning 26.
9. 18 legends were inducted into Baseball's Hall of Fame in 2006. How many of those were Major League pitchers?

Answer: 1

Of the 18, only one was not from the Negro Leagues of baseball. Bruce Sutter was a Cub, Cardinal, and Brave in his 12-season career. He retired in 1988 with a 68-71 record. His notoriety came as a save specialist as he saved exactly 300 games in his career, with his last appearance being number 300 on September 9th against the Padres.
10. The feud between Babe Ruth of the Yankees and manager Miller Huggins is well documented. Which team was Huggins' first team that he managed?

Answer: Cardinals

Huggins managed the Yankees from 1918-1929. Ruth joined the Yankees in 1920. Some say that it was Ruth who was just too much of a strain on Miller, and he would step down with just 11 games left in the 1929 season due to illness, then later die September 25. Huggins took the Yankees to six World Series in his time with the Yankees.

After playing for six seasons with the Reds, the second baseman was traded to the Cardinals in 1910. He would later become their player-manager in 1913, and put his bat down to manage them full-time in the 1917 season.
