Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Pennsylvania, you must be how many yards from any occupied building to legally hunt?

Answer: 150 yards

PA law states 150 yards from any occupied building. That includes dog houses. You might ask, "how do I know if it's occupied"? Good question, just assume it always is.
2. When someone says they are hunting "cockbirds", what are they referring to?

Answer: Pheasant

Cockbirds are male pheasant that are very colorful and make a unique cackling noise when flushed. There are 35 sub-species of pheasant, the most common being introduced to the United States in the 1800s from the Mongolian region of China.
3. What type of dog is likely to be the best choice when hunting upland birds?

Answer: German Shorthair

The German Shorthair pointer is an excellent bird dog. Not the only good bird dog for sure, but the best of this group. They typically have cropped tails, a firm point, and an excellent nose for birds.
4. When hunting geese or ducks, what type of buckshot is not permitted?

Answer: Lead

Lead shot was outlawed due to the fear of lead poisoning in the waterways. Not so much the poisoning of the water, but rather the fear of the waterfowl feeding on the vegetation and eating the lead shot along with it.
5. Geese are also referred to as what?

Answer: Honkers

Most geese are not capable of sustained flight.
6. If you want to hunt for bear in Pennsylvania, you have to apply for a special permit.

Answer: true

The right to hunt for bear is not included with your basic hunting license. Make sure your insurance is paid up in case the bear finds you first.
7. How many doe permits are you are allowed to have?

Answer: Unlimited

There is no specified limit. Each county has a set number of permits it will issue. When the date comes for subsequent permits to be applied for (assuming they aren't all issued on the first go around), you can send as many applications as you wish. The county will continue to issue permits until their limit has been reached.
8. It is suggested that you do not kill and eat rabbits until when?

Answer: After the first frost

Rabbits often carry worms and other parasites. It is suggested you do not eat them until after the first frost which is believed to kill these parasites.
9. When deer hunting, typically three methods are used. Driving (when a hunter or group of hunters walk the woods to drive the deer in one direction to a waiting hunter), tree stand or what?

Answer: Still-hunting

Still-hunting is quietly walking through the woods, hoping to sneak up on a deer. Not an easy task but generally more effective in the middle of the day when deer aren't moving as much. The fact that it is called still-hunting seems to be an oxymoron.
10. When hunting on state gamelands, it is illegal to use a rifle.

Answer: false

Whether or not you can use a rifle or must use a shotgun is determined by the county, and sometimes by the area of the county in which you are hunting. State gameland rules are determined by that. If you are in a "regulated" area, you must use a shotgun.
