America's Black & Gold Sports City Quiz

I have been tasked with "... creat[ing] a quiz with the word 'Dark,' 'Black,' or 'Night" in the title" and so this is my attempt. Black and gold are my favorite color combination, thanks to this city's sports teams and I hope that you like them too.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which U.S. city is known for having Black & Gold sports teams? Ask Andrew Carnegie, if you need a hint!

Answer: Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh does not currently play home to an NBA franchise, but its MLB, NHL and NFL teams all proudly sport black and gold uniforms. Andrew Carnegie founded U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh and gave copious amounts of money to open libraries and the school now known as Carnegie Mellon University.
2. Pittsburgh has three (3) major sports teams that sport Black & Gold as their team colors. Which of the three was the LAST to adopt this color combination?

Answer: Penguins

The Penguins adopted the black & gold look in 1980, hoping to emulate the recent championship seasons of the Pirates and the Steelers. It was a move that was not looked upon kindly by the Boston Bruins, but it looks a LOT better than the Pens' original powder blue! The University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) Panthers have always been blue & gold.
3. Who was the SECOND Pittsburgh sports team to adopt Black & Gold as their team colors, beginning in 1933, and remaining the same as it ever was since then? The year should help to narrow it down.

Answer: Steelers

There was an early hockey team named the Pirates who donned black & gold in 1925, but it was the Steelers who next put on the historic colors and never looked back. When Rolling Rock beer was still being brewed in nearby Latrobe, PA, one of their slogans was "Same as it ever was - 33", perhaps a nod to the Steelers training camp at St. Vincent College.
4. I thought about asking when the Pirates adopted Black & Gold, but that is too esoteric. Instead, what was their color combination just BEFORE the change? 8=)

Answer: Red, white & blue

The Buccos (Buccaneers) were all-American red, white & blue up until the change in 1948. The incorrect answers apply to the much-despised Philadelphia sports teams.
[Pittsburgh Pirates are an MLB team].
5. What was the impetus for the choice of Black & Gold as the colors of Pittsburgh's sports teams? Let's run this one up the flagpole for ideas!

Answer: They are the colors of the city's flag.

The components of the seal and flag of Pittsburgh were suggested by William Pitt (1708-1778), one of Great Britain's Prime Ministers and based upon his family's coat of arms.
William Pitt (the Elder) was the namesake for the city of Pittsburgh.
6. In what year did two of Pittsburgh's Black & Gold teams coincide in winning their respective championships? Brush up on your Roman numerals for this one!

Answer: MCMLXXIX

The Steelers won Super Bowl XIII on 21 January 1979, then the Pirates beat the Baltimore Orioles in Game 7 of the 1979 World Series on 17 October 1979 and the Steelers provided a bookend by winning Super Bowl XIV on 20 January 1980. A City of Champions, indeed!
7. In what 1982 movie, set in Baltimore, did a character disdainfully say that the wedding party would be in Blue & White and "not Black & Gold, y'know, those Pittsburgh colors"?

Answer: Diner

Barry Levinson directed all of the films mentioned, but it was "Diner" that centered around one character's obsession with the then Baltimore Colts (they moved in 1984 and became the Indianapolis Colts) . My buddies and I all went berserk the first time that we heard that line. Since then, I have attended a LOT of Pittsburgh weddings, compete with a cookie table, a keg (or more of Iron City) and a fabulous-looking Black & Gold wedding party!
8. In what year did the Pittsburgh Pirates FIRST win the World Series while wearing the Black & Gold? Let's put it this way, they spanked those Yanks!

Answer: 1960

They switched to Black & Gold in 1948, so that should have eliminated all of the earlier dates. The Buccos defeated the mighty Yankees in Game 7, based on Bill Mazeroski's walk-off home run! It remains an iconic sports moment.
9. The 1970s were a glorious decade for the Black & Gold as the Pirates and Steelers realized great successes in their newly-built shared home. What was the name of this storied venue? Does the word "confluence" help?

Answer: Three Rivers Stadium

Three Rivers Stadium, which the Pittsburgh Pirates opened on 16 July 1970, sat on the north shore of the Ohio River, just west of the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers. I was downtown, on a riverbank across the river, on 11 February 2001 to watch it be imploded. 8=(
The other stadiums were in Cincinnati, OH; Philadelphia, PA and Baltimore, MD. They are all just memories now.
10. The Black & Gold seemed to take the decade of the 1980s off. Which Black & Gold franchise won a championship in 1991, taking flight at long last?

Answer: Pittsburgh Penguins

The heretofore hapless, flightless Penguins won their first championship on 25 May 1991 and again a year later.
