Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. National Hockey League (NHL) goaltender Glenn Hall began his illustrious career in 1952 and eventually retired for the second time in 1971. It was rumoured that he would get sick before every game he played. Which of the following teams did Hall not play for during his career?

Answer: Toronto Maple Leafs

Glenn Hall was rumoured to have thrown up prior to each game and then drunk a glass of orange juice. Beginning in 1955, Hall began an illustrious record that will never be broken in the NHL. Goaltenders never wore masks during the time period in which he played in 502 consecutive games in goal.

As it is now mandatory for goaltenders to wear masks, this record of "consecutive games played by a goaltender without a mask" will never be broken. Suffering from back problems, he was replaced by goaltender Denis DeJordy on November 8, 1962. Hall is noted for being the goaltender that surrendered Bobby Orr's famous Stanley Cup clinching overtime goal during the 1970 Stanley Cup playoffs. Following his second retirement in 1971, he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1975.

In an interview with TyC Sports, Messi stated "I don't know what it is but I had a thousand exams. I start to feel nauseous to the point where I almost vomit, and then it goes away." Fletcher in particular noted that it was not unusual for him to get sick both prior to games as well as on the sidelines during games. Fletcher then went on record stating "By the time it's game day, my stomach's just so queasy, so to speak, that I have to get out some things before the start of the game."
5. During what race did marathoner Paula Radcliffe suffer from a case of "runner's diarrhea" on national television in 2005?

Answer: London Marathon

During running competitions, it is not uncommon for athletes to suffer from a condition known as "runner's diarrhea". This condition hits an athlete suddenly and essentially forces them to urgently need to have a bowel movement. In one of the grandest events in the marathon world, Radcliffe succumbed to this condition on national television.

She stopped during the race on the side of the road and relieved herself in view of both the crowd and television cameras. Continuing with the race, she would win the race by setting a world's best time.

After the race, Radcliffe would issue an apology and blamed her gastro issues on a meal of "grilled salmon" she ate the night before. Other famous "runner's diarrhea" moments include Swedish runner Mikael Ekvall in 2008 and French runner Yohann Diniz at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Answer: United States

Despite warnings that tested waters in Rio de Janeiro were contaminated with bacteria from human waste, teams were still having to practice in the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon. For the United States rowing team in particular, 13 of the 40 athletes as well as four training staff members suffered from vomiting and diarrhea during the course of the championship weekend in 2015.

While it is unclear how the athletes became ill, it is possible that food poisoning or drinking water were to blame. Others, including U.S. team physician Dr. Kathryn Ackerman believed it was due to contaminated water associated with the lagoon.

Answer: Botswana

Various athletes from nations that included Botswana, Canada, Ireland, and Puerto Rico all became victims of nasty stomach issues during the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London. It was believed that the "norovirus" or a case of food poisoning were to blame for this mass illness. In particular, Isaac Makwala, the favoured runner to win the 400 meter run was forced to withdraw from his races by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) after he was deemed to be too sick to participate after vomiting in a call room while waiting for his 200 meter race. Seven Canadians were afflicted with the bug, including marathoner Eric Gillis who dropped out of his race after 20 miles, while Irish hurdler Thomas Barr withdrew from his semi-final race. All of the affected athletes were staying at the Tower hotel in London, England during the competition. In a statement released by the hotel, it was confirmed that the hotel itself was not responsible for the athletes' illness:

"We have worked collaboratively with the EHO (Environmental Health Officer) and the IAAF to investigate the origins of the illness and can confirm that the hotel was not the source. We have followed strict hygiene protocol, ensuring that those affected are not in contact with other guests and all public areas have been thoroughly sanitised."

During the final set tie-break, Sampras, suffering from dehydration, moved to the sidelines and began throwing up while on television. To add insult to injury, he was given a delay of game penalty for taking too long between points. Sampras would beat Corretja in the match, advancing to the final where he would win the 1996 U.S. Open against fellow American Michael Chang.

Coach Robyn McBryde revealed to the BBC that many members of his squad were suffering from a stomach bug both prior to the game as well as at the half-time. Team captain Jamie Roberts was notably sick during the half-time while other members of the team were almost too weak to even make it to Apia Park to play in the game.
