Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gordon Strachan played under Alex Ferguson for both Aberdeen and Manchester United. With which of the following clubs did Strachan NOT face his old manager?

Answer: Middlesbrough

Gordon Strachan played under Alex Ferguson at Aberdeen (1978-1984) and Manchester United (1986-1989). He managed Coventry City (1996-2001), Southampton (2001-2004) and Middlesbrough (2009-2010). While Coventry and Southampton were both in the Premier League during Strachan's tenures, Middlesbrough were in the Championship.

His record against Ferguson was:

Coventry City: P 10 W 1 D 0 L 9
Southampton: P 6 W 1 D 0 L 5

Strachan also faced Ferguson while in the UEFA Champions League group stage during the 2006-07 season while managing Celtic. Celtic lost 3-2 in Manchester but won the return fixture in Glasgow 1-0.
2. Alex McLeish played under Sir Alex at Aberdeen. He would later go on to face his old manager with two teams from the same city. Which of those two clubs did McLeish manage first?

Answer: Birmingham City

Alex McLeish was a central defender who played under Sir Alex Ferguson at Aberdeen from 1978-1986. He began his managerial career at Motherwell in 1994 , before spells at Hibernian, Rangers and the Scotland national team, who he led to a famous 1-0 victory away to France in 2007 against the team who had finished runners up at the previous year's World Cup.

He managed Birmingham City from 2007-2011. Just five days after leaving that job, he joined city rivals Aston Villa, where he was dismissed after only one season following a poor league campaign which saw them escape relegation by only two points.

McLeish's record against Ferguson was:

Birmingham City: P 5 W 0 D 2 L 3
Aston Villa: P 2 W 0 D 0 L 2

McLeish also faced Ferguson during the 2003-04 UEFA Champions League group stage as manager of Rangers. Rangers lost 1-0 at home and 3-0 at Old Trafford.
3. Against which team did Steve Bruce score two late headed goals to help Manchester United win the Premier League title in the 1992-93 season?

Answer: Sheffield Wednesday

Manchester United were aiming to win their first league title since 1967. With six games to go they were in second place. Trailing 1-0 at home to Sheffield Wednesday, Steve Bruce scored two very late goals and United won the game 2-1. The result put them into first place in the league, where they stayed for the remainder of the season.

Steve Bruce played under Sir Alex at Manchester United from 1987-1996, captaining the team in his final two seasons. He faced Sir Alex as a manager with three different clubs. His record against his old boss was as follows:

Birmingham City: P 9 W 0 D 2 L 7
Wigan Athletic: P 4 W 0 D 0 L 4
Sunderland: P 5 W 0 D 2 L 3
4. In September 2009, Mark Hughes' Manchester City lost 4-3 away to Manchester United. Which player scored the winning goal in the 96th minute?

Answer: Michael Owen

In a thrilling contest, United had taken the lead three times, only for City to equalise on each occasion. When Craig Bellamy scored in the 90th minute, City thought they had salvaged a point. However, despite the fourth official signalling for only 4 minutes of stoppage time, Michael Owen scored the winner after 96 minutes, enraging Mark Hughes.

Hughes, a prolific striker himself during his playing days, had previously played at Manchester United but left in 1986 to go to Barcelona, just before Sir Alex took over at United. He returned to United in 1988 and played under Sir Alex until 1995, when he joined Chelsea. His managerial record against Sir Alex was as follows:

Blackburn Rovers: P 7 W 2 D 2 L 3
Manchester City: P 3 W 0 D 0 L 3
Fulham: P 2 W 0 D 1 L 1
QPR: P 1 W 0 D 0 L 1
5. Paul Ince had a fairly tempestuous relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson during his time at Manchester United. Which Italian team bought Ince from United in 1995?

Answer: Inter Milan

Ince played under Sir Alex at Manchester United between 1989-1995. Despite being an integral part of United's midfield during this period, he had an often tempestuous relationship with Sir Alex, who once referred to Ince as a bottler. Sir Alex also disapproved of Ince referring to himself as The Guv'nor, reportedly telling him that "there's only one guv'nor around here, and it ain't you." Ince's managerial record against his former manager was as follows:

Blackburn Rovers: Pl 1 W 0 D 0 L 1
6. Roy Keane famously missed the final of the 1999 Champions League due to suspension. Which other Manchester United player was suspended for the final?

Answer: Paul Scholes

With Manchester United trailing 2-0 away to Juventus in the semi-final second leg, Roy Keane was booked, meaning he would be suspended for the final. Despite this, he scored United's first as they came back to win the match 3-2.

Paul Scholes was also suspended for the final against Bayern Munich. Without their main central midfield partership, United were outclassed for much of the game but, somehow, with just minutes remaining, the Germans were only leading 1-0. Two very late goals from Teddy Sheringham (in the 91st minute), and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (93rd), saw United miraculously win the final and The Treble. Keane's record against Sir Alex was as follows:

Sunderland: P 2 W 0 D 0 L 2
7. Bryan Robson was Sir Alex Ferguson's first club captain at Manchester United. Did Robson win any Premier League titles under Sir Alex?

Answer: Yes

Bryan Robson played for Manchester United from 1981-1994. He became club captain in 1982, an honour he held until his departure. At the time of his departure he was the longest serving captain in the club's history. He won two Premier League titles with Sir Alex, in 1993 and 1994.

He left Manchester United to become player-manager of Middlesbrough. He retired from playing in 1997, but continued as manager of Middlesbrough until 2001. He also faced Sir Alex in the Premier League as manager of West Bromwich Albion, a post he held from 2004-2006. His Premier League record against Sir Alex was as follows:

Middlesbrough: P 10 W 1 D 2 L 7
West Bromwich Albion: P 4 W 0 D 1 L 3
8. Scottish striker Mark McGhee was part of the Aberdeen side which won the Cup Winners' Cup in 1983. Did McGhee score in the final?

Answer: No

McGhee was the first major signing Sir Alex made at Aberdeen. He played for the club from 1979-1984, helping them win two league titles, three Scottish Cups, the Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.

While he did not score in the Cup Winners' Cup final, he did provide the cross for John Hewitt to score the winning goal. Aberdeen defeated Real Madrid 2-1. MgGhee did manage to score against Hamburg in the Super Cup final as the Dons won 2-0 on aggregate, becoming the first Scottish side to lift two European trophies. His managerial record against Sir Alex was:

Leicester City: P 2 W 0 D 1 L 1
9. Kenny Dalglish played one competitive match under Sir Alex Ferguson during qualifying for the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Who were Scotland's opponents?

Answer: Australia

While still manager of Aberdeen, Sir Alex joined Scotland's coaching staff in 1985 under Jock Stein. Sadly, Stein collapsed and died of heart failure during the last last match of the qualifying campaign, against Wales. Scotland needed only a draw in that match to qualify for the UEFA-Ocenaia intercontinental play-off against Australia. Despite the off-field drama, Scotland secured a 1-1 draw. Sir Alex subsequently agreed to become manager for the play-off against Australia, and ultimately the World Cup.

Dalglish played in the first leg of the play-off, which Scotland won 2-0. Dalglish did not feature in the return leg, nor was he picked for the Scotland squad for the 1986 World Cup. Dalglish would play only three more matches for Scotland, one of which, a 3-0 friendly win against Romania in March 1986, was under Sir Alex. Sir Alex later joined Manchester United, while Dalglish would go on to become player-manager at Liverpool. Dalglish's Premier League record against Sir Alex was as follows:

Blackburn Rovers: P 6 W 1 D 2 L 3
Newcastle United: P 3 W 0 D 2 L 1
Liverpool: P 3 W 1 D 1 L 1
10. Graeme Souness was part of Sir Alex's Scotland squad for the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Souness was dropped for Scotland's final group game against which South American side?

Answer: Uruguay

Souness had featured in Scotland's other two fixtures against Denmark and West Germany, but two defeats from two saw the Scots eliminated from the tournament before their final match against Uruguay. Souness, who by his own admission had not played well, was dropped before the final game, although he claims Sir Alex was unusually apologetic about the decision. Souness would not play for Scotland again following the World Cup. His managerial career against Ferguson was:

Liverpool: P 5 W 1 D 3 L 1
Southampton: P 2 W 1 D 0 L 1
Blackburn Rovers: P 7 W 2 D 2 L 3
Newcastle United: P 3 W 0 D 0 L 3
