Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ernie Banks played 19 seasons as an infielder with this team.

Answer: Chicago Cubs

Ernie was primarily a first baseman and shortstop for the Cubbies from 1953-1971. After finishing runner-up for the Rookie of the Year to St. Louis' Wally Moon, he would finish third for the NL MVP the following season, then win two consecutive MVPs in 1958 and 1959. Known as "Mr. Cub", he hit 512 home runs wearing the familiar number 14. Ernie was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1977.
2. This team had Roberto Clemente in their outfield for 18 seasons.

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

Roberto selected the jersey number 13 as a rookie in 1955 then switched to 21 midseason. He wore the 21 in right field until his career ended in 1972. Clemente did not retire. On December 31, 1972, his cargo aircraft that he contracted to bring needed relief supplies to Nicaragua crashed and killed him.

The only reason that he was on that flight was due to supplies being stolen from previous flights. He wanted to personally oversee the operation in 1972. He left baseball with exactly 3000 hits while hitting 240 home runs. Roberto was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Special Elections Committee in 1973.
3. This team witnessed Roy Campanella as a 10-season catcher.

Answer: Brooklyn Dodgers

The Hall of Fame catcher played in 10 seasons for the Dodgers from 1948-1957. He won the National League MVP three times in 1951, 1953, and 1955. An automobile accident which left him in a wheelchair curtailed his career. Roy caught for some of the greatest pitchers in baseball such as Preacher Roe, Ralph Branca, Don Newcombe, Sandy Koufax, and Don Drysdale. Campanella died in 1993 at the age of 71.
4. He played in over 1300 games during 11 seasons out in centerfield. He was Dom DiMaggio and played with this team.

Answer: Boston Red Sox

Dom was the youngest of the DiMaggio brothers with Vince being the oldest and Joe in the middle. Both brothers continue to overshadow Dom's existence and career. He played from 1940-1953 and lost three seasons to World War II. Dom was an all-star seven times in his career which matched his jersey number 7 in center field.
5. Carl Hubbell was a pitcher his entire career of 16 seasons with this team.

Answer: New York Giants

Hubbell was a career New York Giant in 16 seasons from 1928-1943. Manager John McGraw had Carl under his wing in 14 seasons, then Hall of Fame great Mel Ott managed him in his final two. Hubbell was 20-game winner in five consecutive seasons and won two NL MVP Awards in 1933 and 1936. Carl was inducted into the Hall in 1947. He died in 1988 at the age of 85.
6. This team watched Bob Lemon stand on their mound for 15 seasons.

Answer: Cleveland Indians

Lemon had to delay his pitching debut with the Indians due to three years of WWII. He was a 25-year old rookie in 1946. Bob finished in the top five for the MVP Award three times in his career. Leading the league in strikeouts only once, Bob was a 20-game winner seven times.

He went to two World Series and won two games in the 1948 crown against the Braves. He was a 1976 Hall inductee, and died in 2000 at the age of 79.
7. Don Mattingly known as "Donnie Baseball" played with this team for 14 seasons.

Answer: New York Yankees

In 13 of his 14 from 1982-1995, Mattingly was a fixture at first base with his final season playing the role of designated hitter. Wearing the number 23 on his back, Don won the AL MVP in 1985 while leading the league in doubles, RBIs, and batting .324 over runner-up Kansas City's George Brett.

He took a backseat for the MVP in 1986 to Roger Clemens. After retiring in 1995 he took over the helm of the Dodgers in 2011.
8. The outfielder Tony Oliva played in 15 seasons with this team.

Answer: Minnesota Twins

In 11 of his 16 seasons Tony was in the Twins' outfield from 1962-1976. His final seasons were at DH. After winning the Rookie of the Year Award, he was runner-up for the AL MVP to teammate Zoilo Versalles. He was also runner-up again in 1970 to Boog Powell of the Orioles. Tony batted over .300 seven times in his career and was named as an all-star eight times.
9. Hall of Fame great Brooks Robinson found himself at third base for over 2800 games with this team in 23 seasons.

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

Brooks was one of those longtime loyal players. He played third base for the Orioles in 23 seasons from 1955-1977. He wore the numbers 40, 6, and 34 before settling on the jersey number 5 in 1957. Robinson won the AL MVP in 1964 and was runner-up for the MVP in 1966 to teammate Frank Robinson. Boog Powell of the Orioles finished third in the voting to show the talent of that 1966 team. Nicknamed "Human Vacuum Cleaner", Brooks won an amazing 16 Gold Glove Awards at third base.

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1983.
10. This team had a fixture wearing the number 24 in Mickey Stanley in 15 seasons.

Answer: Detroit Tigers

Stanley signed as a free-agent with the Tigers in 1961 but didn't see his debut until September 1964. He primarily played in the outfield. Although Mickey never batted .300 in his career, he carried consistent numbers including hitting 17 home runs in 1973. He had the honor of winning a World Series ring when the Tigers defeated the Cardinals in the 1968 series.
