Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rugby Union - Which English Premiership club is known as the 'Cherry and Whites'?

Answer: Gloucester

Founded in 1873, the 'Cherry and Whites' are so called because of the colours the team wears. It was never an official nickname but from around the mid-1950s, that name became an affectionate form of address. There was an attempt at re-branding the team nickname as the 'Lions' in the early 2000s, but this was largely unsuccessful.

This question was hand-balled by Team Red member VegemiteKid.
2. What object, also known as a rack, is used to arrange the fifteen red balls in snooker?

Answer: Triangle

The triangle is but one of the several accessories used in snooker and is traditionally made of wood shaped like an equilateral triangle. It is used to carefully arrange the red balls just behind the pink ball where the first player to pot gets to make a dramatic strike at this mass of red, scattering the balls all over the table. We in Team Red also appreciate that reds significantly outnumber any other kind of ball - there are seven other colours represented on the board: yellow, brown, green, blue, pink, black and the white cue ball itself.

3. Aussie Rules football - Which red shirted team made their AFL debut in 2011 and lost their opening game against Carlton by a score of 171-52?

Answer: Gold Coast Suns

It was a tough debut season for the Suns as they lost their next two games, 122-51 against Western Bulldogs and 159-69 against Melbourne Demons before snatching a victory against Port Adelaide, winning 104-101. Sadly, they won only two more games all season and finished bottom of the 2011 ladder. Between their debut season in 2011 and 2018, their best end of season finish came in 2014, when they ended the season in 12th place out of the 18 teams.

4. As with any sporting competition, the sight of your team's colours will bring great pride while the opposition colours will leave you seeing red. Which of the following English football (soccer) teams does NOT wear red for their home games?

Answer: Manchester City

Manchester City FC wear sky blue and white as their home game colours. Even their away kit is blue- navy to be precise. Founded in 1880 under the banner St Marks, the name was changed to Ardwick Association FC and finally Manchester City in 1894. How they came to wear the current colours is lost in the mists of time; however prior to 1892 it is thought that the team did wear either black and white or scarlet and black.

In 1969 and 1970 the team wore black and red stripes for their away games and the red came through- they won the 1969 FA Cup final, the 1970 League Cup final and the 1970 European Cup Winners' Cup final.

5. Which notable Australian cricketer, nicknamed "Tugga", was as famous for his ability to accumulate runs as he was for a red handkerchief that he'd leave sticking out of his pocket?

Answer: Steve Waugh

Superstition in cricket is real and it hits even the best of them. Sachin Tendulkar, considered one of the finest to ever grace the field, would always strap on his left pad first, Rahul Dravid always ensured that it was his right foot that he placed onto the field first whenever he went out to bat and Steve "Tugga" Waugh would not part with his red rag no matter how battered and tattered it became. It certainly worked for him as he managed to plunder some of the best bowlers across the globe to tune of 10,927 Test runs at an average of 51.06 over a career of 168 Tests.

6. Which of the following is NOT associated with the Detroit Red Wings ice hockey team?

Answer: Throwing catfish on the ice

The "tradition' of throwing a catfish on the ice originated when Nashville Predators fans began throwing catfish on their home ice in response to the Red Wings fans flinging octopuses, commemorating the Stanley Cup Playoffs of 1952 when the Wings won two best of seven series each in two games and continuing to win the Stanley Cup. Two brothers in the stands threw a dead octopus--the eight legs symbolizing the eight wins.

The first ever outdoor game played by the Red Wings was at Marquette Branch Prison in 1954. They played a team comprised of prisoners appropriately called the Pirates, after leading 18-0 in the first ten minutes of play they stopped keeping score and played for fun. In the 1936 Stanley Cup Finals the Detroit Red Wings beat the Montreal Maroons in a score of 1-0 with 116 minutes and 30 seconds of overtime. Gordie Howe played 25 seasons with the Red Wings. His reputation as a scorer and a fighter lent itself to the expression "a Gordie Howe hat trick", i.e. a goal, an assist and a fight!

7. In golf, what are the red stakes or lines used to mark?

Answer: Lateral water hazard

In golf, there are two types of water hazards which are marked using two different colors. Yellow stakes or lines mark water hazards, which usually cross the fairway and players must hit their ball over it. Red stakes mark lateral water hazards, which run alongside the fairway. When a player's ball enters a lateral water hazard, the player gets a one stroke penalty. After taking the ball from the water, it must be dropped within a two club distance of where it entered the water but it can't be placed any closer to the hole. A player can also choose to drop the ball on the opposite side of the lateral water hazard, provided that this is no closer to the hole, but this opportunity could give them a better shot.

8. From 1974 to 1989 the Boston Red Sox had a prolific left fielder who hit 382 home runs with the team. Who was this player that was an eight time All-Star but, in spite of his name, did NOT have a brother named Jerry that played for the 49ers of the NFL?

Answer: Jim Rice

Jim Rice played his entire 16 year career with the Boston Red Sox and he appeared in over 2,000 games. For about one-fourth of these games he was a designated hitter and did not actively play defense. Rice's best season was likely 1978 when he won the MVP award and led the league in at bats, hits, triples, home runs, RBIs and total bases.

9. In Australia's National Rugby League competition, each team has distinctive colours, Which of these four teams has NO red in its main jersey?

Answer: Parramatta Eels

NRL clubs are fiercely protective of their team colours and each team has a distinct combination though they tend to have an alternate jersey for away games. St George, traditionally, play with a white strip with a broad red V on the jersey; Manly have a predominantly maroon jersey with white accents; Brisbane colours are maroon, gold and white. Parramatta colours are predominantly dark blue with gold insets. Their away strip is the reverse.

10. In horse racing, jockey Red Pollard is best known for riding which of these horses?

Answer: Seabiscuit

All four horses are famous enough that even non racing fans should have heard of them. Red Pollard was a Canadian, who rode Seabiscuit in thirty races, of which eighteen were victorious. The story of Seabiscuit, and of Red Pollard, was told in the 2003 film, called 'Seabiscuit', with Tobey Maguire playing Pollard.
