Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Major League Baseball player, who played his entire career with the Baltimore Orioles, played in 2,632 consecutive games from 1983 to 1998?

Answer: Cal Ripken Jr.

Ripken broke Gehrig's record of 2,130 games played in a row on September 6, 1995. On that night Ripken hit a home run, that was called on local radio by US President Bill Clinton. The streak continued for 500 more games over the next four seasons until Ripken removed himself from the Orioles' final game in 1998. He played the entire streak at shortstop, with some time at third base.
2. Tour de France- how many times did Lance Armstrong win it consecutively?

Answer: 7

From 1999 to 2005, Armstrong was the King of the Tour, taking the yellow jersey in Paris every year. Armstrong was on team US Postal/Discovery Channel. What made Armstrong's streak more impressive is Armstrong's battle with testicular cancer which he won before starting the streak in 1999.
He was stripped of all titles in October 2012.
3. Which NFL quarterback, most notably known for playing with the Green Bay Packers, started 297 games in a row, a streak that lasted from 1992 to 2010?

Answer: Brett Favre

Favre began his streak September 27, 1992 when he started for the Packers against the Pittsburgh Steelers. 18 years and two teams later, Favre sat out a game for the Minnesota Vikings against the New York Giants on December 13, 2010. During the streak, 238 other people started at quarterback in the NFL, 17 being Favre's backup.
4. Beginning when he was 17 years old, this Pakistani athlete Jahangir Khan won 555 consecutive matches in what sport?

Answer: Squash

Starting in 1981, Khan won the World Open, becoming the youngest to win the prestigious event. For the next five years, Khan won every match he took part in, all 555. In 1986 at the World Open, Khan dropped a match to Ross Norman, ending the streak, exactly five years and eight months after it began. Khan retired in 1993 as a six-time world Cup champ and a 10 time British Open winner.
5. In 1941 Joe DiMaggio hit successfully in 56 straight MLB games with what team?

Answer: New York Yankees

During the streak, which lasted from May 15-July 16, 1941), DiMaggio hit .408 with 11 home runs and 55 RBI. The day after the streak ended, DiMaggio began a 16 game hit streak. Joe hit safely in 72 of 73 games, also a record.
6. From the 1969-70 season until the 1992-93 season, the Israeli basketball team Maccabi Tel Aviv B.C. pulled off which incredible feat in the Israeli league?

Answer: Won the championship every year

The 92-93 season saw the club finish in 3rd place, the first time since the 1968-69 campaign when the club weren't the champs. The club must not have liked their third place finishing because the next year they regained their championship position, and held it for another 14 years until 2008.
7. In baseball, holding a team without a hit for 9 innings is extremely hard. How about no-hitting an opponent for 25.1 innings? Which pitcher, who was so good they named an award after him, threw almost three consecutive games without allowing a hit?

Answer: Cy Young

On April 25, 1904, Young, playing for the Boston Americans, finished with three no-hit innings against the Philadelphia Athletics followed by seven hitless innings in relief on April 30, against the Washington Senators. On May 5, Young threw a perfect game, the first in American League history, also against the A's. Back on the mound 6 days later versus the Detroit Tigers, Young threw 6.1 hitless innings before surrendering a knock.
8. Esther Vergeer is considered the most dominant athlete in pro sports. After a loss on January 3, 2003, she did not lose a match for the rest of the decade, winning just over 400 matches until 2010. What sport does she thrive at, despite playing it in a wheelchair?

Answer: Tennis

Vergeer was diagnosed with paraplegia at the age of 8 and confined to a wheelchair. Vergeer also took part in wheelchair basketball, along with her stunning tennis career. Between August 2005 and October 2006, not only did she win every match she played in, she won every set, and only one needed a tiebreaker.
9. When Lee Westwood became golf's #1 ranked player in October of 2010 which golfer, who had some problems off the course, saw his number one streak end at 281 weeks?

Answer: Tiger Woods

Woods got caught up in a sex scandal after it was revealed that he was having relationships with many different women, during his marriage. When he lost his number one ranking on October 30, 2010, it marked the first time since June 12, 2005 that Woods wasn't atop the world rankings.
10. There are losing streaks, and then there is this. On January 6, 2007 the California Institute of Technology Beavers won a game for the first time since 1996. They had a 207 game losing streak in what sport?

Answer: Men's basketball

The losing streak came to end against Brad College with an 81-52 win. It took until February 21, 2011 for the Beavers to snap a losing streak against conference opponents, when they beat Occidental College. That streak began back in 1985. The film "Quantam Hoops" (2007) documents the team's 2005-06 season.

The men's basketball team isn't the only bad team though. The soccer team snapped a 201 game drought with a last second goal against Cal Lutheran. The women`s basketball team snapped a "mini" 50 game losing streak.
