Leicester City's original name of Leicester Fosse is derived from the ancient Roman road, Fosse Way, adjacent to their first home ground. The club reformed as Leicester City in 1919 after Fosse had suffered severe financial troubles.

Filbert Street opened in 1891 with a match against Loughborough Town. The record attendance at the stadium was 47,298 for an FA Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur in 1928. The final match at the ground came in 2002 when Tottenham Hotspur were again the visitors. Later that year, Leicester moved into the brand new Walkers Stadium, later renamed the King Power Stadium.

After wearing a variety of different colour schemes during their first 20 years, Leicester City permamently adopted blue and white as their first choice strip in 1904. Shirt designs change from season to season, but the most common Leicester kit is blue shirts with a white trim, and white shorts.

Leicestershire is considered to be the origin of the "sport" of fox hunting. Leicester City adopted a fox on their club badge in 1948, and the "foxes" nickname in all likelihood began being used at around the same time.

Leicester reached their first League Cup final in 1964 when Matt Gillies was the manager. The final against Stoke City was a two-legged affair at that time, and a Dave Gibson goal earned Leicester a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Stoke. Seven days later Leicester clinched the trophy on home soil with a 3-2 win, their goals coming from Mike Stringfellow, Dave Gibson and Howard Riley.

Under the managership of Martin O'Neill, Leicester won the trophy twice. In 1997 they faced Middlesbrough at Wembley and looked to being ending up on the losing side until Emile Heskey scored a goal in the last minute of extra time to earn a 1-1 draw. The replay took place at Hillsborough, Sheffield, and again went to extra time, Steve Claridge scoring the game's only goal.

In 2000, Leicester's third League Cup arrived. Matt Elliott scored both goals at Wembley in a 2-1 victory over Tranmere Rovers.

This game took place on 20th October, 1928. Arthur Chandler helped himself to six goals in this game, and Leicester City went on to finish 2nd in Division One, just one point behind Sheffield Wednesday.

In season 2014-15, Leicester City escaped seemingly inevitable relegation after a late season run of victories, but decided to sack manager Nigel Pearson, with Claudio Ranieri replacing him. The club began the next season with most pundits expecting another relegation battle - the bookmakers were quoting odds of 5000-1 on them actually winning the title.

Leicester began season 2015-16 on an incredible run of just one defeat in their first 17 games and, despite the "experts" predicting an imminent collapse at any moment, it didn't happen and City finished the season on top of the table, ten points ahead of runners-up Arsenal. Typical of English football, Ranieri was "rewarded" by being sacked in February of the following year.

Jamie Vardy joined Leicester City from Fleetwood Town in 2012. In season 2015-16 he set a new record by scoring in eleven successive Premier League matches as Leicester surged to the top of the table. His eventual total of 24 goals played a huge part in the club's title triumph.

Leicester City finished top of their group in the 2016-17 Champions League, ahead of FC Porto, FC Copenhagen and Club Brugge. In the round of 16, they were drawn against Sevilla FC and overturned a 0-1 first leg deficit by winning 2-0 at home. They faced further Spanish opposition in the quarter-finals where their run was ended by Atletico Madrid by an aggregate score of 1-2.

In the 2021 FA Cup, Leicester City defeated Stoke City, Brentford, Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester United, before seeing off Southampton in the semi-final at Wembley. In the final, back at Wembley, Youri Tielemans scored the only goal of the game to overcome Chelsea and send the famous old trophy to Leicester for the first time.
