Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following materials are field hockey sticks *not* allowed to be made from?

Answer: Metal

Field hockey sticks are not allowed to contain any metal as this could create sharp edges if the stick was damaged which could injure other players. Hockey sticks were traditionally made of wood and many players particularly at beginner or recreational level still use wooden sticks, however more expensive sticks are now often made from a mixture of fibreglass, aramid fibre (such as Kevlar) and carbon fibre.
2. Since 2015 what has been the maximum permitted length of a field hockey stick?

Answer: 105cm

In 2015 a maximum length of 105cm (41 inches) was introduced for field hockey sticks, prior to this there had been no maximum length. As well as a maximum length there is also a maximum weight for hockey sticks of 737g, although most players use a lighter stick than this.
3. How many players from each team are allowed on the field at any one time?

Answer: 11

There are eleven players per team allowed on a hockey field at any time, up to five additional players are allowed in a squad and these can be substituted in and out as many times as is desired during the course of the match. The team who are in possession of the ball are called the attack and the other team the defence.
4. There's one player on a field hockey team who is allowed to play at the ball with their hands and feet. What name is used for this position?

Answer: Goalkeeper

Each team is allowed to have one goalkeeper on the field during matches. The goal keeper can use any part of their body to deflect the ball away from the goal including their hands and feet which other players would receive a penalty for doing. Goal keepers must wear a helmet, leg guards and footguards and they are also allowed to wear additional protective equipment such as hand guards and chest guards.
5. You have the ball and have a clear shot at goal but then a teammate tells you you can't score a goal if you're not in the area called the circle. Is your teammate correct?

Answer: Yes

Yes your teammate is correct. You can only score a goal in field hockey if you play the ball inside the circle and the ball does not leave the circle again before entering the goal. The circle is the name given to the semi-circular areas marked on the field in front of each goal.
6. Oh dear, a cat has run on to the field and the umpire has stopped the game clock while it is being removed! What is the name for the way that play is restarted after a situation such as this?

Answer: Bully

A bully is used to restart play when the clock has been stopped but the ball was not out of play and no penalty has been awarded, this could happen if there is an injury to a player or for some other reason, such as an animal on the field as in this question! When play is restarted with a bully the ball is placed between a player from each team who then must tap sticks before they try to play the ball.

A bully used to be used for starting matches and for restarting play after a goal but this was replaced with the uncontested centre pass in 1981.

A free hit is when a player is allowed to play the ball uncontested and is usually awarded as a penalty when a foul has been committed. A face off is a term used in ice hockey.
7. You manage to get the ball and want to hit it really hard to get it to the other end of the field. To get extra power, can you lift your stick up high above your head before striking the ball?

Answer: No

Lifting the stick above head height is deemed using the stick in a dangerous way as a high stick could cause injury to other players. If you lift your stick above head height the umpire will call a foul and this will usually result in the opposing team being awarded a free hit.
8. You send the ball up the field but then the umpire stops play due to a foul and awards your team a penalty corner. Which of the following fouls would lead to a penalty corner?

Answer: A ball played in the circle but not aimed at goal hits a defender's foot

A penalty corner is awarded by the umpire in a number of situations that occur in the circle, the name given to the marked semi-circular area in front of the goal. In this example of a ball that was played in the circle but not aimed at goal hitting a defenders foot a penalty corner would be awarded as it was an unintentional offence by a defensive player and it did not stop a likely goal being scored.
9. A foul has been committed and the umpire has indicated that the attacking team will get a free shot at goal with only the goalkeeper allowed to defend the shot. What is this shot called?

Answer: Penalty stroke

A penalty stroke is a type of penalty where the attacking team get a free shot at goal and is taken from the penalty spot marked within the circle. So that the player taking the shot is not impeded by other players all players other than the player taking the shot and the goalkeeper must stand outside of the 23 meter area in front of the goal.

The goalkeeper must stay on the goal-line until the ball has been played. A penalty corner is awarded in situations where a foul has been committed in the circle and stopped a probable goal being scored, or an intentional foul has been committed against the player with the ball in the circle.
10. Field hockey is an Olympic sport and made its first appearance at which Olympic Games?

Answer: London 1908

Men's field hockey was first played at the Olympic Games that took place in London in 1908. The sport was absent from the 1912 and 1924 Olympic Games, although there was a competition in 1920, before becoming a permanent Olympic sport at the 1928 games. The first Olympic Games to feature women's field hockey were the 1980 games held in Moscow.
