Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We'll start simple: Fowling, is a mash-up of two other sports. Which two were combined to make the new sport?

Answer: Football and Bowling

In fowling, invented in 2001, players grab a football and toss it down a lane toward a set of bowling pins. The object is the be the first player (or team depending on how many players) to knock down all 10 pins.
2. A player steps up to the foul line and launches the ball toward the opponent's side of the play. When can the opposing team play defense?

Answer: From the moment the ball touches down on the other end

Defense is not allowed before the football makes contact with the opposite end of the field of play.

Players can not interfere with the toss or initial ball landing. Players can however intercept the ball before it rebounds and knocks down extra pins.
3. Chris Hutt is a Detroit (Michigan) native. The game is considered a staple of Detroit culture, but it was actually invented in what city?

Answer: Indianapolis (Indiana)

The game uses a similar layout to cornhole or horseshoes, with 10 pins on each end.

Hutt and friends invented it while tailgating the Indianapolis 500. Since then the game has continued to grow.
4. While deemed to be from Detroit, the official home of the Fowling Warehouse, the business that founder Chris Hutt started, is actually based in what Michigan city?

Answer: Hamtramck

Hamtramck is a city within a city, being fully surrounded by the much larger city of Detroit.

The small population (about 22,000 per the 2010 census) and total land area of about 2 miles made it one of the smallest cities in the state of Michigan.

The Fowling Warehouse is home to the first official Fowling League and offers games to anyone willing to enter the arena.
5. A game of fowling can be won on the first throw if a player knocks over the 5 pin without knocking down any of the others.

Answer: True

This is referred to as a Bonk.

In the Fowling Warehouse a loud alarm blares if anyone Bonks, in the less formal settings when played in parks, at tailgate parties or other venues it is generally just a celebration.
6. What was the name of the first official fowling tournament?

Answer: Superfowl Saturday

The tournament is played in the week leading up to the Indianapolis 500 every year. It celebrated 10 years in 2014.

The Turkey Fowl is a Metro Detroit tournament played each year the weekend after Thanksgiving.
7. A traditional game of bowling uses 10 pins, Fowling however is much different. How many pins are used in a standard game?

Answer: 20

Using a standard bowling configuration at each end of the alley, there are 20 pins used in a game.

Players compete to see who can knock over the other team's 10 pins first.
8. Games can be played head-to-head or with teams. How many players compete on a team during standard league play?

Answer: 2

Teams consist of two players in standard league play, though when playing for fun teams can vary. The first time I ever played it was one on three.

When team numbers are even each team member rotates tosses until one team wins.
9. Is there an official rules organization that maintains order within the sport of fowling?

Answer: Yes

The sport was invented at a tailgate party as a way to pass the time, but has grown into a following, including an national organization to maintain rules for the sport.

The American Fowling Association was established by creator Chris Hutt as an official governing body for the sport. Members of the association must always play by association rules, regardless of the venue.
10. The first ever "trophy" awarded for winning an official Fowling tournament wasn't a trophy at all. What strange item was awarded instead?

Answer: A can of sauerkraut.

According to sport creator Chris Hutt, there was no official trophy planned when he organized the first Superfowl Saturday.

When the winning team demanded a trophy he grabbed the first thing that he saw to give them.

A can of sauerkraut has become the annual tradition for winning the tournament.
