1. Which 'birdman' in 1976 went wild and won the AL Rookie of the Year Award?

Answer: Mark Fidrych

Mark "The Bird" Fidrych, known for his gyrations and talking to the ball on the mound, was a Detroit Tiger. He went 19-9 in the season, and boosted the attendance at every ballpark that he pitched in. That was his only shining season as he encountered health and injury issues. He was out of baseball in five seasons.
2. Which slugger hit the most home runs in the decade?

Answer: Willie Stargell

The others were all retired before 1970. Willie "Pops" Stargell was a career Pittsburgh Pirate. He smacked 296 in the decade and 475 in his 21-season career. George Foster of the Reds took the season high honors in the decade when he hit 52 in 1977.
3. Baseball lost which Hall of Fame pitcher to a heart attack in 1974?

Answer: Dizzy Dean

Dean was a St. Louis Cardinal in the 1930s. Nicknamed "Dizzy", his brother Paul who was nicknamed "Daffy", both played with the Cardinals. In 1934, Dizzy went 30-7 while Paul went 19-11. Dizzy was 64 when he died, and Paul died in 1981 at the age of 69.
4. Who was the only pitcher to throw a Triple Crown in the 1970s?

Answer: Steve Carlton

The others were all retired before the 1970s rolled around. Steve was a St. Louis Cardinal for seven seasons, then was traded to the Phillies in 1972 for pitcher Rick Wise. What were the Cardinals thinking? In his first season with the Phillies, Carlton threw the Triple Crown, went 27-10 and won the Cy Young Award. He would win three more Cy Young's before he retired in 1986.
5. The Toronto Blue Jays' franchise joined Major League Baseball in the 1970s. Which other team joined the ranks in the decade?

Answer: Seattle Mariners

The year was 1977 when both the Blue Jays and Mariners joined up. The Angels began it all in 1961. The Padres came in 1969, and the Marlins joined the big time in 1993.
6. In which year in the decade did Nolan Ryan set a new season strikeout record?

Answer: 1973

Ryan was with the California Angels in 1973, and on the last batter that he faced in the season, he struck him out for number 383. He broke the record of Sandy Koufax who fanned 382 with the Dodgers in 1965.
7. Only one team was skunked four games to none in a World Series in the decade. Who was on the losing end of that series?

Answer: New York Yankees

The Yankees met the Big Red Machine of Cincinnati in the 1976 series, and the Reds turned the pinstripes down. It was the second consecutive series crown for the Reds as they defeated Boston four games to three in 1975, in one of the greatest World Series ever.

The Manager of the Year Award did not begin until 1983. Tommy Lasorda of the Dodgers won the National League's inaugural award, while Tony LaRussa of the White Sox took the American League's first award.

From 1972-1974, the Oakland Athletics were in charge by winning three consecutive crowns. The Reds followed in 1975 and 1976 by defeating the Red Sox and Yankees. It was the Yankees' turn in 1977 and 1978, downing the Dodgers twice. The Baltimore Orioles appeared in the promised land three times in the decade, winning only one.
10. Which Hall of Fame player hit five home runs in one World Series in the decade?

Answer: Reggie Jackson

Against the Dodgers in 1977, Jackson hit solo shots in games four and five, then hit three in the final game six. The Yankees defeated the Dodgers four games to two. Jackson hit a total of 18 postseason home runs, with 10 being in the World Series. Reggie still fell short of Mickey Mantle's 18 World Series career home runs.
