1. 1972: Which of these became United manager this year?

Answer: Tommy Docherty

Docherty managed the club between 1972-77, and was sacked for an illicit affair with a club psysiotherapist's wife. His most famous quote was, "I've had more clubs than Jack Nicklaus", which was in reference to the number of teams he had managed.
2. 1973: Which future European Cup winner for United was born this year?

Answer: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Solskjaer was born on February 26th in Kristiansund, Norway, and will forever be known by United fans, for scoring the winner in the 1999 European Cup final against Bayern Munich.
3. 1974: United were relegated to the 2nd division along with Southampton and which other club?

Answer: Norwich City

Many people blamed ex-United player Denis Law, as he scored the goal for Manchester City against United, but if United had beaten City, they still would have been relegated, as they finished 5 points from safety.
4. 1975: United bounced straight back into top-flight football by becoming second division champions. Which three teams did United, Aston Villa and Norwich City replace in the first division?

Answer: Luton Town, Chelsea & Carlisle United

United won the title with 61 points to Aston Villa's 58, and Norwich City's 53. Also this year, Steve Coppell was signed from Tranmere Rovers, and David Beckham was born on May 2nd in Leytonstone, London.

Answer: Jimmy Nicholl

United lost the game 1-0 against Southampton, and finished third in the league.

In a frenzied 5 minutes of the second half, Pearson put United ahead, only for Jimmy Case to level things up for Liverpool just 2 minutes later. Jimmy Greenhoff got a touch on Lou Macari's effort to win the cup for United and make it their 4th overall.
7. 1978: Who did United lose to on the final day of the season, 2-1?

Answer: Wolverhampton Wanderers

United finished 10th in the League this year, winning 16 out of 42 games.
8. 1979: United reached the FA Cup final again for the third successive season where they faced Arsenal. The match was evenly poised at 2-2 until Arsenal scored a late winner. Who got the goal that beat United?

Answer: Alan Sunderland

With only five minutes left, Arsenal were leading 2-0 until Gordon McQueen, and then Sammy McIlroy levelled at 2-2. It looked as though United were running down the clock and hoping for extra time, but Graham Rix managed to get hold of the ball and cross for Sunderland to score the winner.
9. 1980: Which team did United play six times during the 1979-80 season?

Answer: Tottenham Hotspur

In the league encounters, United won both. The first was 2-1 at White Hart Lane with Steve Coppell and Lou Macari getting the goals. The second, at Old Trafford finished 4-1 with goals from Ray Wilkins and an Andie Ritchie hat-trick. The FA Cup games were 1-1 with Sammy McIlroy getting United's goal, and Spurs won 1-0 in the replay.

The League cup, being a two-legged affair, finished 2-1 to Spurs after the first leg, Mickey Thomas being the Unitd scorer, and 3-1 in the second to United. Coppell, Thomas and Ritchie the scorers.
10. 1981: Which of these was signed by the club this year?

Answer: Bryan Robson

'Captain Marvel' was signed from West Bromwich Albion in October 1981 along with Remi Moses. Between 1981-94, Robson made 457 appearances for the club and scored 97 goals. He was also the only player in the 20th century to captain three FA cup winning teams, in 1983, 1985, and 1990.
