Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 2011 Sugar Bowl featured The Ohio State Buckeyes playing yet another SEC team in a bowl game. Ohio State had not been very successful against SEC opponents in their previous bowl game attempts with an 0-9 all time record. Which team was it that finally gaVe the Buckeyes a victory over a SEC opponent?

Answer: Arkansas Razorbacks

Ohio State has had great teams in recent memory, they just couldn't overcome the strength of their SEC opponents. In fact, the Buckeyes made it to the national championship game twice in the 1990s, losing in consecutive years to the Florida Gators in 2006 and the LSU Tigers in 2007.

In all fairness to Ohio State, it should be noted that they have won their share of national championships, including a great victory over the Miami Hurricanes in 2002. The 2011 Sugar Bowl two talented quarterbacks in Terrelle Pryor from Ohio State and Ryan Mallett of Arkansas.

It wasn't surprising to see an offensive explosion on the field with these two gunslingers at the helm. The two teams combined for 848 total yards and 57 points. Terrelle Pryor won the MVP award as he completed 14 of 25 passes for 221 yards a couple of touchdowns.
2. Expectations were high in Los Angeles, CA as Rick Neuheisel entered his third year as head coach. Many sports experts claimed 2010 to be the year that UCLA would finally turn the corner and make a run for the national championship. This wouldn't be the case though. Of the following statements, which of these is true regarding the 2010 UCLA Bruin season?

Answer: The hapless Bruins did not win enough games to qualify for a bowl invitation.

The UCLA Bruins finished the 2010 season with a record of 4-8. Their only victories were against Houston, Texas, Washington State and Oregon State. Rick Neuheisel was expected to bring UCLA back to national prominence, but the 2010 season may have put him on the hot seat to be replaced.

The team certainly has enough talent to contend in the Pac-10, after all, nine players were named to the All Pac-10 team, including two first team selections.
3. Coaching in his last game before retiring, Urban Meyer led the Florida Gators to a victory over highly regarded coach Joe Paterno and his Penn State Nittany Lions. In which bowl game did Coach Meyer bid adieu to the Florida faithful?

Answer: Outback Bowl

On New Years Day, 2011, the Florida Gators defeated Penn State 37-24. Coach Joe Paterno was hoping to win his 25th bowl game, but Coach Meyer had other plans. The Gators may not have won the game if it weren't for Ahmad Black's two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) and a blocked punt which the Gators returned 27 yards to the end zone.

It probably helped the Gator's cause that the Penn State quarterback tossed five interceptions in the game.
4. The Oregon Ducks got the opportunity to play in their first national championship game in 2011 against the Auburn Tigers. Unfortunately, the team fell short in their attempt at a victory as Auburn won a nail-biter with a score of 22-19. The game was tied at 19 when Auburn drove the ball 73 yards at the end of the game to kick a field goal to win. The drive featured an odd play where the Auburn running back appeared to have been tackled, but his body was never ruled down and he got to get up and continue running. What was the name of the person running the ball for Auburn in this play?

Answer: Michael Dyer

In one of the oddest plays in recent memory, Michael Dyer took the ball and appeared to be stopped for a moderate gain of six yards. As Dyer was tackled, he fell on top of the defender and his body was never in contact with the ground. As he got to his feet, he noticed all the Auburn players on the side line cheering him on to continue running.

He did, finally being brought down 37 yards later. The play was reviewed by the officials, but his 37 yard scamper was upheld. On the final play of the game, Auburn's place kicker, Wes Bynum, kicked a short field goal as time expired to give Auburn their first national championship in over 50 years.
5. The North Carolina Tar Heels made an appearance in their 28th bowl game on December 20, 2010. The game was played against the Volunteers of Tennessee. The game was a thrilling event with a very unusual ending. How did this game finally end?

Answer: North Carolina won 30-27 in the game's second overtime period.

Tennessee was on their way to a near-certain victory when things went suddenly wrong for them. North Carolina had no timeouts, there were 31 seconds remaining in the game and they were on their own 20 yard line. Things looked grim for the Tarheels, but their never say die attitude saw them drive the ball all the way down into Tennessee territory. With North Carolina needing a way to stop the clock, they handed the ball to their running back, Shaun Draughn, for a chance to go out of bounds.

Instead, he was tackled inbounds and the clock continued to run.

The North Carolina quarterback gathered his team at the line of scrimmage to spike the ball, but the referees stopped the game, claiming time had expired. However, instant replay showed the clock was stopped with one second remaining. North Carolina was assessed a penalty for having too many men on the field, yet they were still able to kick a 39 yard field goal to send the game to overtime. Both teams scored touchdowns in the first overtime period, but Tennessee's quarterback threw an interception in the second overtime period which led to the game winning field goal by the Tarheels.
6. The Michigan State Spartans were soundly defeated by the Crimson Tide of Alabama in the 65th playing of the Capital One Bowl in Orlando, FL. Alabama jumped out to a huge lead, scoring 49 straight points before finally allowing the Spartans on the board in the fourth quarter. With all the scoring on the Alabama side of the ball, it was surprising that a defensive player would win the game's MVP award, but that's exactly what happened. Who was the Alabama player who took home the game MVP award that day?

Answer: Linebacker Courtney Upshaw

I was privileged enough to attend this game, and as an Alabama fan, I had a blast. This would be the first time these two teams would ever face-off on the gridiron, but Alabama's coach was no stranger to the Spartans. He had been their head coach from 1995-1999. Making it even more memorable, the current Michigan State head coach was an assistant under Coach Saban during that time, so the two men have a friendly history. I don't think anyone expected such a one sided performance in this game. Most Alabama starters were pulled after only playing two quarters in an effort not to run up the score. Alabama running backs accounted for five offensive touchdowns in the game.
7. The 75th incarnation of the Cotton Bowl saw the LSU Tigers soundly defeat the Texas A&M Aggies 41-24. With the two schools being in neighboring states, it makes sense that the two teams would have a history playing each other. Including this game, how many times have the two teams lined up against other?

Answer: 50

LSU has an edge in the series, winning 27, losing 20 and tying three times. This is the second time the two teams played in a bowl game, the first time occurring in the 1944 Orange Bowl.
Texas A&M looked good initially, jumping out to a 10-0 lead, but the LSU Tigers would not be denied in their attempts at victory. They scored 21 points in the second quarter and never let Texas A&M mount a serious threat to them.
The 2011 Cotton Bowl was played at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX.
8. The Meineke Car Care Bowl featured two teams who barely had enough wins to qualify for a bowl invitation. The Clemson Tigers, with a 6-6 record, were invited, but were beat by a team sporting a 7-5 record. Which team from Florida beat Clemson in this game?

Answer: South Florida Bulls

The South Florida Bulls were playing in their third straight bowl game where they qualified with a 7-5 record. This would be the first meeting between Clemson and South Florida. Clemson was favored to emerge victorious, but the Bulls outperformed the Tigers to take the win.
This game is the last time this game will be played as the Meineke Car Care Bowl as corporate sponsorship ended in 2011. The game was played in Charlotte, North Carolina in front of over 41,000 fans.
9. Georgia Tech played the 2010 Independence Bowl against one of the United States Service academies. What was the end result of the game?

Answer: Georgia Tech lost to Air Force 14-7.

The Independence Bowl featured a low scoring game between the Air Force Falcons and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. This was the fourth time the two teams would meet. The teams played a series against one another from 1977-1979 and Tech won each of those.
10. One of the more surprising victories of the 2010-2011 bowl season was the Mississippi State Bulldogs whipping of a Big Ten school by a score of 52-14. No one could have predicted that the outcome of the game would have been so lopsided. Which team did the Bulldogs defeat in this game?

Answer: University of Michigan Wolverines

This game would mark the worst loss in Michigan bowl history. The previous game in which they received such a bashing was against another SEC team, when Tennessee beat them 45-17 in the 2002 Citrus Bowl.
The game was played in Jacksonville, FL at EverBank Field. The game marked the ending of the corporate sponsorship of the game by Konica Minolta. It also marked the last game with Rich Rodriguez at the helm of the Wolverines. He was terminated just four days after this shocking loss and Brady Hoke (previously of San Diego State) was hired as his replacement.
