One of three bowl games to celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2009 - along with the Orange Bowl and the Sugar Bowl - the Sun Bowl was played on New Year's Day from 1935 to 1958. Since 1958, it has been played between Christmas Day and New Year's Day, most often being played on New Year's Eve. The CBS television network began a long-standing broadcast relationship with the game in 1968. At the time of the 2010 game between Notre Dame and Miami (Florida), it was the longest such broadcasting relationship among the college bowl games.
Boston-based John Hancock Financial served as the Sun Bowl's first sponsor from 1986 to 1993. The game was actually known as the John Hancock Bowl from 1989 to 1993. After two years without a title sponsor, the game picked up Minneapolis-based Norwest, a banking and financial-services institution, as sponsor from 1996 to 1998. San Francisco-based Wells Fargo, which acquired Norwest in 1998, served as the game's sponsor from 1999 to 2003. Helen of Troy Limited, which has its U.S. operations in El Paso, sponsored the game through its Vitalis and Brut brands from 2003 to 2009. Automobile manufacturer Hyundai became the fourth company to sponsor the game in 2010.
