Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On October 6th, 1991, David Cone tied a Mets record by striking out 19 batters in a game. Who was he facing that day?

Answer: Philadelphia Phillies

Cone struck out 19 Phillies only a few short hours after being accused of rape. He was eventually acquitted of the charge. The Mets won this game, the final game of the 1991 season, 7-0.
2. In 1989, Sid Fernandez pitched one of the greatest games of his life against the Atlanta Braves, striking out 16 batters over 8 innings. Unfortunately, he would lose the game when the first batter for the Braves in the last of the 9th hit a game-winning HR. Who hit it?

Answer: Lonnie Smith

Smith led off the 9th inning with a monstrous HR off Sid to win the game 3-2.
3. Game 6 of the 1986 NLCS, won by the Mets over the Houston Astros in 16 innings, was chronicled in a gripping book titled 'The Greatest Game Ever Played.' Who was the author of this book?

Answer: Jerry Izenberg

Izenberg, then a columnist for the Newark Star-Ledger, wrote the book, a chronicle of the entire NLCS, in 1987.
4. In which of these years did the Mets set an all-time attendance record?

Answer: 1988

While the Mets did draw over 3 million for the first time in 1987, in 88 they drew a club record when 3,047,748 fans poured into Shea to see the Mets win 100 games.
5. Which Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher was ejected from game 3 of the 1988 NLCS for having pine tar on his glove?

Answer: Jay Howell

Howell was tossed from the game after having worked a 3-0 count on Kevin McReynolds in the bottom of the 8th inning with the Dodgers ahead 4-3. The Mets would rally for 5 in the 8th to win the game 8-4. Howell would be suspended for the remainder of the series.
6. Which loudmouthed member of the 1986 Boston Red Sox claimed he would 'master' the Mets before the World Series began?

Answer: Dennis Boyd

Dennis 'Oil Can' Boyd, known as a cut-up and a trash talker, made the statement before his game 3 start. The Mets would score 4 off Boyd in the first inning and go on to win the game 7-1. Boyd was slated to start game 7 as well, but due to a rainout was passed over in favor of Bruce Hurst.
7. Who was the first Mets player to start in an All-Star game?

Answer: Ron Hunt

Hunt was the first Met to start in an All-Star game, oddly enough, in 1964 at Shea Stadium. Grote was the second Met to start a game, in 1968.
8. The Mets swung a masterful deal on June 15th, 1983 when they acquired Keith Hernandez from the St. Louis Cardinals for Neil Allen and ______ , a righthanded pitcher?

Answer: Rick Ownbey

Allen actually had had some success with the Mets as a reliever. Ownbey is basically the answer to a trivia question.
9. Which member of the 1986 Mets was NOT arrested during a bar-room scuffle while on a road trip in Houston?

Answer: Darryl Strawberry

The gathering had ocurred after a July game to celebrate the birth of Teufel's first child. The fight was precipitated when one of the players (Teufel, I believe) attempted to leave the bar with his drink when he was stopped by an off-duty Houston policeman. Words were exchanged and a scuffle ensued. Darling and Teufel were charged with aggravated assault, Ojeda and Rick Aguilera were charged with resisting arrest. All four spent the night in jail.
10. September 26th, 1992: which Met became the first non-pitcher to pitch in a game for the Mets?

Answer: Bill Pecota

Pecota became the first non-pitcher to pitch for the Mets in the 8th inning of a 19-2 loss to the Pirates. He promptly gave up a HR to the first man he faced, but then retired the next three batters in order.
11. With his start at 3B on May 2nd, 1995, this man became the 100th 3Bman in Mets history. Who is he?

Answer: Edgardo Alfonzo

This 9-6 Mets loss to the Expos marked only the third game in what would become a brilliant career (so far) for Edgardo Alfonzo. He would go 1 for 3 in the game, the hit also being his first in the majors.
12. In 1998, John Olerud set a Mets team record by having the highest single-season batting average in club history. What was John's Batting Average that season?

Answer: .354

Olerud hit a whopping .354 in 98 (197 hits in 557 ABs, technically .3536), shattering Cleon Jones' record of .340 which had stood since 1969.
13. Which Mets reliever of the late 80s-early 90s was noted for his eccentric habits which included snacking on iguana?

Answer: Julio Machado

Machado was known more for eating iguana than for his pitching abilties. And that's not necessarily a good thing.
14. May 20th, 1999: Robin Ventura became the first player in Major League history to wallop Grand Slams in both games of a doubleheader. Which Milwaukee Brewer pitchers surrendered Robin's slams?

Answer: Jim Abbott and Horacio Estrada

Jim Abbott gave up Robin's first slam in the first inning of the first game, won by the Mets 11-10. Estrada gave up Robin's second slam in the 4th inning of the 2nd game. Oddly enough, both Abbott and Estrada were left-handed pitchers and Robin is a left-handed batter. Go figure.
15. The Mets and Rockies played the first game ever in Coors Field on April 26th, 1995. Which Met's 3rd inning Home Run marked the first of many HRs that would be hit in Denver's Coors Field?

Answer: Rico Brogna

Brogna hit the Mets first HR of the season off Rockies starter Bill Swift. Two innings later, Todd Hundley would hit the first grand slam in the history of Coors Field. But the Rockies would go on to win 11-9 in 14 innings, thanks to a walk-off HR by Dante Bichette.
16. Which one of these picthers set the Mets single-season record for wins by a relief pitcher, with 14 wins?

Answer: Roger McDowell

Roger McDowell won 14 games in 1986.
17. Many Mets fans remember Robin Ventura's famous Grand Slam Single in the 1999 NLCS. Who was the Atlanta Braves pitcher who served up this memorable hit?

Answer: Kevin McGlinchy

McGlinchy, a 22-year old rookie, had been inserted into the game in the 14th inning, and stood to be the winning pitcher had he been able to close out the Mets in the 15th. But, obviously rattled, he was unable to find the plate, and walked three before surrendering Robin's blast.
18. This late-round draft pick of 1995 would eventually be dealt to the Florida Marlins for Al Leiter. Who is he?

Answer: A.J. Burnett

Burnett, an 8th round pick of the Mets in 1995, was dealt to the Marlins in 1998 for Al Leiter. In 2001, Burnett would toss a no-hitter at the San Diego Padres.
19. Which Met player was featured briefly in the movie 'Men in Black'?

Answer: Bernard Gilkey

Gilkey stood cluelessly as a giant spaceship distracted his view of a fly ball. That clueless look was repeated many times during his latter seasons with the Mets.
20. Which Hall-of-Famer was NOT a coach for the Mets?

Answer: Duke Snider

Berra and Spahn both finished their careers as player-coaches with the 1965 Mets. Hornsby was a coach for the 1962 Mets. But Duke Snider only played for the Mets, he never was a coach.
