Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The manager Gil Hodges had a brilliant strategy to get the most out of a solid but unspectacular line-up. He employed a platoon system for all but three positions. Can you name these three?

Answer: Shortstop, Centerfield and Left field

Platooning is having players who play the same position but bat from different sides of the plate. This allows the manager to match a left handed batter against a right-handed pitcher or vice-versa. In 1969, the only 3 Mets who played almost every day were Bud Harrelson (shortstop), Cleon Jones (left field), and Tommie Agee (centerfield).
2. The Mets had an excellent pitching staff in 1969. They were led by their Cy Young Award winner Tom Seaver. Can you give me his record for 1969?

Answer: 25-7

Although he went by Tom his whole life, his real name is George Thomas Seaver. He also was the MVP runner-up to the great Willie McCovey in 1969.
3. What team did the Mets clinch their first division season title against in 1969?

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

The Mets went on to win the NL East by 8.0 games over the runner-up Cubs, and the last place Expos by 48.0 games.
4. On June 15, the Mets made a trade for the player who was the missing piece of the puzzle. Can you name this veteran player?

Answer: Donn Clendenon

Clendenon was liberated from last place Montreal and went on to provide 12 homers and 37 RBIs to the Met offense. In addition, he provided much need leadership to a young Met team.
5. In 1969, Cleon Jones had a phenomenal year batting .340 but ultimately finished third in batting. Can you name the player who won the title that year?

Answer: Pete Rose

Cleon finished third in the batting race to all-time hit leader Rose, and to Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente.
6. 1969 was the first year that the leagues were split into divisions (East and West). Can you give me the name of the team from the West that the Mets beat in 3 straight games for the National League Championship (NLCS)?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

The Mets swept the favored Braves 3 games to 0 and outscored the much stronger Braves line-up 27 to 15.
7. The World Series did not start well for the Mets as they lost the first game 4 to 1. Can you name the Baltimore Oriole who led off the bottom of the 1st inning with a home run?

Answer: Don Buford

The great Tom Seaver lost the only game the Mets would lose in this Series giving up an uncharacteristic 4 runs in 5 innings.
8. Against which 2 Oriole hitters did Tommie Agee make 2 spectacular catches that saved a possible 5 runs and aided the Mets in their 5 to 0 win?

Answer: Elrod Hendricks and Paul Blair

The late great Tommie Agee saved game 3 for the Mets. In the 4th inning he raced from right center field all the way to left center to grab Hendricks' drive in the webbing of his glove at the wall. In the 7th, he made a diving grab of Blair's liner that ended a bases loaded threat.
9. In Game 3, the longest tenured Met contributed a home run. Can you name this player who was with the club since its inception in 1962?

Answer: Ed Kranepool

Ed Kranepool was signed by the Mets upon his high school graduation in 1962 at the age of 17. He made his first appearance in the Majors later that year.
10. Who pitched the Mets to the the title with a complete game victory in Game 5?

Answer: Jerry Koosman

Koosman gave 3 runs in the third inning but then shut the Orioles down and gave the Met hitters time to come back and win the game.
