Prior to that move they had been located in three other cities and played under many names, including Springfield Sultans (1994-1995), Waterloo Diamonds (1989-1993), Waterloo Indians (1977-1988), Waterloo Royals (1970-1976), Waterloo Hawks (1958-1969), Lafayette Red Sox (1956-1957) and Lafayette Chiefs (1955).

The Shock debuted in 1998, and won three WNBA championships prior to relocating to Tulsa in 2009. They were league champions in 2003, 2006, and 2008. After several years in Tulsa the team moved again, this time to Dallas where it was renamed the Dallas Wings in 2016.
