Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Australia first sent competitors to the Winter Olympics way back in 1936, but it was not until 2002 that they won their first gold medal. Who won that medal?

Answer: Steven Bradbury

Bradbury was virtually handed the gold for the 1,000 metres short-track on a platter. After scraping into the quarterfinals, and again into the semis, he was regarded by the pundits as being the rank outsider. In the final, all four of his opponents crashed out on the final turn, leaving him as the only one standing. The look on his face as he crossed the line, and glanced over his shoulder at the carnage behind him, was priceless.

Zali Steggall won a bronze in 1998 in the Alpine Skiing event, and the Australian Ice Hockey team is usually hopelessly outclassed by northern hemisphere countries.

Colin Coates represented Australia at a record six games, but did not win any medals.
2. In the 2002 Soccer World Cup qualifying matches, who did Australia beat by a mammoth 31 to zero?

Answer: American Samoa

Striker Archie Thompson set a new individual World Cup scoring record by slotting 13 goals past the hapless goalkeeper. They had also flogged Tonga a few days beforehand, 22-0.

Unfortunately, Australia was beaten by Uruguay in the Intercontinental Playoffs, and did not make the 32-team field.
3. Which father and son jockeys both rode the Melbourne Cup winners twice each?

Answer: Billy and Peter Cook

Billy won in 1941 and 1945, on Skipton and Rainbird, and Peter won in 1981 and 1984. His mounts were Just A Dash and Black Knight.

Titch Wilson rode back-to-back winners in 1922/23 and James Wilson was the winning trainer in 1873. James and Darby Munro are unrelated as are the two Browns.
4. Which long-serving basketball coach retired in 2005, after coaching the Melbourne Tigers for 35 years?

Answer: Lindsay Gaze

Lindsay Gaze played in three Olympics, and coached the Australian team at four more. His son, Andrew, who also captained the Boomers thrice, retired at the same time. Father and son were both inducted into Basketball's Hall of Fame in 2004.

Hurley was also a coaching stalwart, and took over the national job from Gaze. Carfino was an American who enjoyed considerable success with the Sydney Kings.
5. Which Australian golfer won the Arnold Palmer Trophy for the leading money-winner on the US Tour three times, in 1986, 1990 and 1995?

Answer: Greg Norman

The Great White Shark had 29 top-ten finishes in Majors, including two wins at the Open Championship. Nagle and Thomson both retired from golf in 1984, and Baker-Finch had nowhere near the success of Norman.
6. Which of the cricketing Chappell brothers is the oldest?

Answer: Ian

Ian (born 1943) and Greg (born 1948) both captained Australia on many occasions, and Trevor (born 1952) will probably always be remembered for the 'underarm' incident against the Kiwis in 1981. There is no Fred in the family.
7. In 1979, the fifth Netball World Championship was held in Trinidad and Tobago. Because of the way the tournament was set up, there were no provisions to split a dead-heat, and three teams finished with eight of nine wins. One of these teams was Australia, but who were the other two?

Answer: New Zealand and Trinidad and Tobago

In 1991, the format of the tournament was changed so that there could only be a single champion; Australia beat the arch-enemy, New Zealand, in the final.
8. The Gold Coast were a short-lived Rugby League team that only existed from 1988 to 1998, but during that time they were known by three nicknames. What were these names?

Answer: Giants, Seagulls, Chargers

A team was introduced in the 2007 season, known as the Gold Coast Titans. Most of the incorrect options are the names of defunct (or merged) teams; one that you may not recognise is the Dales- Annandale was only in the league for two seasons, 1908 and 1909.
9. Because the majority of the Australian population lives within about 300 kms of an ocean, surf sports are a part of life here. Who won a record six Australian Open Ironman titles between 1987 and 1994?

Answer: Trevor Hendy

He also won the World title four times in a row, from 1991-94. After retiring from Ironman competition, he relaxed by taking up kayaking, where his competitive streak took to the Olympics and a third in the World Championships in 1998.

The other three options are all superb Ironman competitors- Kenny was champ from 1980-83, Mercer won in 1989 and 1995, and Hurst reigned supreme in the early 2000s, picking up four championships.
10. Roger Bannister was the first person to run a sub-four-minute mile, in 1954, but an Australian was the second person to break the barrier. Who was he?

Answer: John Landy

Bannister performed his feat at a meet in Oxford, clocking 3.59.4, but Landy was hot on his heels, and took the record the following month at a race in Finland, with a 3.58.0.

Later in life, Landy turned to public life and was selected as Governor of Victoria in 2001.

Herb Elliott also held the world record, lowering the time to 3.54.5 in 1958. Ron Clarke was also a well known Australian distance runner, and Peter Snell was a New Zealand runner of some renown.
