Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of these excellent bench players succeeded in winning two NBA Sixth Man Awards in the 1990s?

Answer: Detlef Schrempf

Having perhaps the all-time coolest name in NBA basketball, the German born player Detlef Schrempf played for four NBA teams during his career: Dallas, Indiana, Seattle and Portland. Both of his Sixth Man Awards came while playing for the Indiana Pacers during the 90-91 and 91-92 seasons. No other player won two Sixth Man Awards in the 1990s.
2. Which Canadian city was the first to host an NBA team?

Answer: Toronto

The first NBA team based in Canada was the short-lived Toronto Huskies, who remained in the league for only one season (1946-7) and sported a record of 22-38. Canada went NBA-less until the 1995 season when both the Toronto Raptors and Vancouver Grizzlies kicked off their inaugural seasons. The Grizzlies would move to Memphis in 2001.
3. Michael Jordan is viewed by many as the greatest basketball player of all time. During his career, he garnered five regular-season MVP trophies. Is it true that each of these came in the 1990s?

Answer: No

Michael Jordan's MVP years were as follows: 1987-88, 1990-91, 1991-92, 1995-96, 1997-98. As you can see, he won a trophy in the 87-88 season with these unbelievable stats: 35 points per game, .535 shooting percentage, 5.5 rebounds per game, 5.9 assists per game, 3.16 steals per game and a career high 1.6 blocks per game!
4. Who was the first of the great Lithuanian players to make it on an NBA roster?

Answer: Sarunas Marciulionis

Marciulionis was part of the first wave of former Soviet Bloc players to join the NBA. Sarunas first played for Golden State, then moved on to Seattle, Sacramento and Denver. Sabonis finally joined the NBA in 1995, after having been drafted all the way back in 1985 by Portland.

He played his entire seven-season NBA career with Portland. Ilgauskas was the third Lithuanian player drafted into the NBA, by Cleveland in 1996. Volkov was a Russian player!
5. NBA player Maybyner Rodney Hilario, who began his career in the year 2002 with the Denver Nuggets, legally changed his name to which of the following in 2003?

Answer: Nene

Hilario officially changed his name to 'Nene', which means 'baby' in Portuguese. There has been a long tradition of Brazilian athletes going by one-name titles (Pele, Ronaldo, etc.) and it appears that Nene decided to follow in those footsteps.
6. The Minnesota Timberwolves began as an NBA expansion team in 1989. At that time, what was the team's nickname?

Answer: Timberwolves

The Timberwolves, or T-wolves, entered the league as the Timberwolves in 1989 and promptly went 22-60 in their first season. They had their first winning season in 97-98, their ninth in the NBA. By the 02-03 season, they had never won an NBA playoff series, despite seven attempts.
7. Which of the following players did not play in both the ABA and the NBA?

Answer: Alex English

Alex English played his entire career for the Denver Nuggets, a former ABA team that moved to the NBA two years before English's professional career began. Julius 'Dr. J' Erving played for both Virginia and the Nets in the ABA before moving on to the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA. Moses Malone played for Utah and St. Louis in the ABA before moving on to play for several teams in the NBA, most notably Houston and Philadelphia. Rick Barry played for the Warriors in the NBA, then moved to the Oakland Oaks (who became the Washington Capitols) and the New York Nets in the ABA. Finally, he returned to the Warriors and the Rockets in the NBA once again.
8. Which of these former Boston Celtics players recorded the most blocks per game in their regular-season career with that team?

Answer: Kevin McHale

It may be surprising to learn that the seemingly unathletic McHale leads this pack. He recorded a total of 1,690 blocks in 971 games with the Celtics, an average of 1.74 blocks per game. In 1106 career games with the Celts, Parish managed 1,703 blocks, an average of 1.54 a game. Bill Walton only played 90 games with the Celts and managed a total of 116 blocks, or 1.29 a game.

In his entire career he averaged 2.21 blocks per game. Bird only recorded .84 blocks per game. Sadly, the blocked shot statistic was not recorded until 1973, so we will never know how many blocks Bill Russell had with the Celtics. I'm willing to bet it was more than 1.74 a game, however!
9. In John Stockton's 19-year career, how many seasons did he not play in every single regular season game (reminder: the 1998-99 season was strike-shortened; each team played a total of 50 games)?

Answer: 2

Incredibly, in an era where lost toenails and common colds regularly knock players out for several games, Stockton only missed a total of 22 games in his career, all during the 1989-90 season (4 games, injury and sickness) and the 1997-98 season (18 games, due to a knee injury). Stockton played in 82 games in 16 different years, and played in all 50 of the Jazz games during the strike-shortened season.) I just had to get in a Jazz question ... go figure huh?
10. Which of these players did not score over 30,000 pts in their NBA career?

Answer: Dominique Wilkins

Among these NBA greats, only Dominique Wilkins, the scoring machine for the Atlanta Hawks (and later, briefly for the Celtics, Spurs and Magic), failed to score 30,000 career points, ending with 26,668 total points.
