Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of my nicknames is 'Zeke from Cabin Creek'. I was the first player to win the finals MVP and be on the losing team. I had the honor of having my silhouette selected as the NBA logo. I wore the number 44 over my Laker purple and gold. Who am I?

Answer: Jerry West

West, of the Los Angeles Lakers, won the NBA Finals MVP in a losing cause against the Celtics in 1969. His other nickname, 'Mr. Clutch', was appropriate, as he always came through when the Lakers needed it. West later became the general manager of the Lakers. His nickname 'Zeke from Cabin Creek' is derived from his hometown in the state of West Virginia.
2. I came out of the University of Arizona. My Father Henry played for UCLA and in the NBA. In the 1998 NBA draft, I was the second pick overall and was selected by Vancouver. By the 2003-2004 season, I was playing in my third season with the Kings. I came to the Kings in a trade that also included Jason Williams and Nick Anderson. Who am I?

Answer: Mike Bibby

The others listed all played before Bibby was born. Born in 1978, Mike followed his Father's footsteps by playing professional basketball. The 03-04 season was Bibby's sixth season in the NBA. He set a new career high in February 2004 by scoring 30 points against Denver.
3. Which was the last team in the 2003-2004 season to win 15 games?

Answer: Orlando

The others listed were among the first teams to win 40 games. At the time of the Magic's 15th victory, their home record was 8-19 with a road record of 7-23. Despite acquiring players such as Tracy McGrady and Juwan Howard, the Magic struggled after losing the Penny Hardaway-Shaq O'Neal tandem.

In February of 2004, McGrady became the second youngest player in history to reach 10,000 points in his career. Ironically, he was ejected from the game in which he reached that milestone, despite his team's victory over Denver.

His ejection came after kicking a ball into the stands not once, but twice!
4. Which former Boston Celtic had the nickname of 'Satch'?

Answer: Tom Sanders

Tom 'Satch' Sanders helped the Celtics to eight NBA titles. He was flanked by fellow forward Tom Heinsohn. His number 16 was retired by the Celtics. Both he and teammate K.C. Jones later went on to coach the Celtics.
5. I began my NBA career by playing five seasons with the Houston Rockets. After seeing action for one season in Phoenix, I became a three-point specialist with the Lakers for seven seasons. In 2003-04, I signed as a free agent with the San Antonio Spurs. Who am I?

Answer: Robert Horry

Horry, a 6'10" forward out of Alabama, entered the NBA in 1992. He made 298 three-pointers in his Laker career, and also set an NBA record by hitting seven consecutive 'threes' in the 1997 playoffs. In 2004, Robert and Scottie Pippen were the only active players with at least five championship rings (Pippen had six).
6. Which NBA team won nine championships in the 1960s?

Answer: Boston Celtics

The other teams listed never even saw a finals in the 1960s. Boston ruled the NBA in the 60s, beginning with the 1959-1960 season when they defeated the St. Louis Hawks four games to three. They capped off the decade by beating the Lakers in the 68-69 season finals, four games to three.

The Celtics missed the finals for the 1966-1967 season, which saw Philadelphia defeat the Warriors for the Championship. In their 60s run, Boston beat the Lakers six times in the finals. Following their success in the 60s the Celtics would wait five seasons before they made it to another NBA finals game.
7. In 2004, a surprising new franchise was awarded to which city, and what is their nickname?

Answer: Charlotte Bobcats

Despite having lost the Hornets only two years prior, Charlotte managed to lure another NBA franchise to their city in 2004. The Bobcats of Charlotte with the help of owner Robert L. Johnson and head coach Bernie Bickerstaff, share the community with the WNBA Charlotte Sting. Rufus Lynx was selected as the Bobcat's new mascot.
8. By the 2004 all-star break, which team had the best home record?

Answer: Sacramento Kings

At the break, the Kings' home record was 23-4. The other teams listed had not even won 23 games total by the mid-season break! The Kings carried the highest winning percentage at the break in the NBA, and were leading the Pacific Division over their Laker rivals.
9. Which of the following NBA players was a rookie in the 2003-2004 season?

Answer: Luke Walton

The others listed had played at least 10 seasons already by the 03-04 season, Walton's rookie year. Luke Walton was born in March 1980 and is the son of UCLA great Bill Walton. Luke came out of Arizona and was picked up by the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA draft. He began his NBA career with the number four on his jersey.
10. The NBA Finals MVP Award was first handed out in 1969. Who was the first recipient of this award?

Answer: Jerry West

The others had not even been born yet. Jerry West won the first award, and ironically, his Los Angeles Lakers lost to the Boston Celtics four games to three (deja vu!) Thank you for having tried this quiz, if you enjoyed it feel free to try some of my other NBA-related stuff.
