NFL Season in Review: 2009 Trivia Quiz

Answer: Indianapolis Colts

The Saints ended up with a 13-3 record, as did the Chargers did quietly. The Vikings who were led by Brett Favre, finished out with a 12-4 record. Peyton Manning's Colts closed the season out with their 14-2 record.

Answer: St. Louis Rams

Both the Redskins and Chiefs went 4-12 in 2009. The Lions pulled off two wins in the season by defeating the Redskins in Week 3 19-14, then the Browns in Week 11 38-37. 38 points was the most points that the Lions had scored since Week 9 in 2007, in a 44-7 win against the Broncos.

The Rams were pretty dismal in 2009, going 1-15. Ironically, their only win in the season was a 17-10 victory in Week 8 against the Lions.

Answer: New Orleans Saints

The others scored less than 425 points, but still no slouch by any means. Teams that scored at least 400 points in the season were the Saints with 510, the Vikings with 470, the Packers with 461, Chargers scoring 454, the Eagles with 429, the Colts scoring 416, and the Giants with 402 points.

Answer: Isaac Bruce

The others were all AFC players. Bruce was a 49er in 2009 and was in his 16th NFL season after spending 14 seasons with the Rams. He had a career high in 1996 by catching 1338 passing yards, and in 1995 caught a career high 119 passes.

Answer: New York Jets

Believe it or not, the Jets' defense only gave up 236 points throughout the entire season. Second was the Cowboys by giving up 250 points, then the Ravens with 261. The others listed were at least eighth on the list, and all gave up more than 300 points in the season.

Answer: Jeff Feagles

The others did not kick 1200 punts in their careers. Jeff was in his 22nd season, and in 2009 was a New York Giant. With 64 punts in the season, he ended the season with 1713 career punts.

Answer: Adrian Peterson

Peterson was in his third season in the NFL and with the Vikings. His 18 matched the 2008 leader in DeAngelo Williams of the Panthers, and was a new career high for Adrian. Tomlinson's record-setting season was with the Chargers.

Answer: Peyton Manning

The others left the 2009 season with under 2700 pass completions. Brett departed the season with 363 completions in 2009, and 6083 in his career. Manning completed 393 passes in 2009, giving him a career total of 4232. Dan Marino was second on the career list with 4967 completions.

The Patriots met the Tennessee Titans in Week 6 in the season, and responded with a very embarrassing 59-0 win over them. The Patriots went to the locker room at halftime with a 35-0 lead. It was the sixth consecutive loss for the Titans, but they would rebound to a 8-8 record under head coach Jeff Fisher.

Answer: Chris Johnson

The first-ever running back to top the 2000-yard mark was O.J. Simpson with the Buffalo Bills in 1973. Those that followed were Eric Dickerson in 1984, Barry Sanders in 1997, Terrell Davis in 1998, Jamal Lewis in 2003, and Johnson of the Tennessee Titans in 2009.

Answer: Matt Schaub

Matt Schaub was in his third season with the Houston Texans after playing in three for the Falcons. Schaub threw for 4770 yards in 2009, along with 29 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Andre Johnson was the Texans biggest recipient with 1569 yards, the only Houston receiver to go over 1000 yards in the season.

The Texans finished the season with a 9-7 record, good enough for second place in the AFC South.

Answer: Matt Stover

The others were at least 400 points behind Carney and Stover. Stover played most of his career with the Ravens, but was a Colt in 2009. They were both still more than 400 points behind the number one and two man on this list of Morten Andersen and Gary Anderson.

Answer: Wes Welker

Welker was in his sixth season, and third with the Patriots in 2009. He led the league with his 123 catches. It was the second time that he led the league in receptions, and from the arm of quarterback Tom Brady. Although he suffered a season-ending injury in Week 17 of the season against the Texans, he still took the title with eight more catches than Andre Johnson of the Texans.

Answer: Jeff Feagles

The others hadn't played in 300 games in their careers. Feagles was a New York Giants kicker in 2009, and was one game short of moving into second place on the all-time games played list behind Gary Anderson who played in 353 career games. Morten Andersen was on the top of the list with 382 games under his belt.

Answer: Drew Brees

Brees of the Saints matched his career high of 34 touchdown passes from the previous season also. In 2008, he threw for 5069 yards, compared to 4388 in 2009. Robert Meachem and Marques Colston shared the team lead by catching nine of the those touchdown passes each. 10 different Saints caught touchdown passes in the 2009 season.

Answer: Terrell Owens

Terrell moved into the sixth spot on the all-time list in the season, just a few passes behind the only active player on the list, Isaac Bruce. Owens was a Buffalo Bill in 2009, after playing for many teams prior in his career.

Answer: Danny Amendola

One of very few highlights for the St. Louis Rams in the season, rookie Danny Amendola from Texas Tech led the league with 1618 return yards.

Answer: Matt Cassel

After shining in 2008 with the Patriots, Cassel had a much different offensive line with the Chiefs in 2009. Both Garrard and Cassel coughed up the ball 14 times in the season. Cassel also threw 16 touchdowns along with 16 interceptions.

The only teams to repeat as Division Champions were the San Diego Chargers in the AFC West, the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North, and the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC West.

Answer: Elvis Dumervil

Dumervil was in his fourth season with the Denver Broncos. The defensive end had 17 sacks. DeMarcus Ware of the Cowboys had only 11 sacks, compared to his league-leading 20 in 2008.

Answer: Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals went 4-12 in 2008, then turned it around with a rushing attack in 2009 to win 10 games. Three teams improved by winning five more games in the season also. Those were the Chargers and Titans who both went from eight wins to 13, then the Packers who won six in 2008, then 11 in 2009.

Answer: Asante Samuel

Samuel was the only Eagle listed. Samuel was in his seventh NFL season. He picked off nine passes. The others who shared the award were Jairus Byrd of the Bills, Darren Sharper of the Saints, and Charles Woodson of the Packers.

Answer: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tampa Bay went a respectable 9-7 in 2008, then went a dismal 3-13 to finish last in the NFC South. The Titans went from a 13-3 2008 record, to a 8-8 record in 2009 also.

Unlike 2008, and Donovan McNabb's fuzziness on the rules against the Bengals, there were no ties in 2009.

Answer: Green Bay Packers

The others all allowed more than 100 rushing yards per game. The Packers' defense allowed only 83.3 yards per game average. They allowed only five rushing touchdowns in the entire season. On the other end of the spectrum with rushing yardage allowed, the Buccaneers were at the bottom of the list by allowing 158.2 yards per game. Both the Raiders and Rams also tied for the league low by allowing 24 rushing touchdowns each.
