Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 1970s NFL team was the first-ever team to rush for over 3000 yards in a season?

Answer: Buffalo Bills

1973 was the season of O.J. Simpson and the Bills. He rushed for 2003 yards in the season, helping the team's total of 3088 rushing yards. The 1978 New England Patriots rushed for 3165 yards to break the Bills' record. The 1972 perfect-season Miami Dolphins, having two 1000-yard rushers in the names of Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris, fell 40 yards short of the 3000-yard mark.
2. From 1976-1977, which team set a NFL record by losing 26 consecutive games?

Answer: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

1976 was the first season of the new Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They went 0-14. 1977 saw them lose another 12 games before experiencing their first win. In Week 13, they downed the Saints 33-14. The team's head coach was John McKay until 1984. In the 2002 season, the Buccaneers went 12-4 and went on to win their first Super Bowl, 48-21 against the Oakland Raiders.
3. On December 2, 2007, the Jacksonville Jaguars took on the Indianapolis Colts in a regular season game. What happened in this game that tied a record?

Answer: No team punted

In the season, Adam Podlesh of the Jags punted 54 times. The Colts' Hunter Smith would punt 52 times. Neither punter seemed to have a job in this particular game. The Colts won the game 10-2.

On the other side of the coin, a record that was set for most punts in a game occurred on October 22, 1933, in a game that saw the Bears and Packers go at it. The Bears punted 17 times, and watched the Packers punt another 14 times. Ironically, that record was tied later in the same day with 31 again. That game was between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh.
4. Which defunct franchise that played for at least 15 seasons, set a NFL record for having only one rushing touchdown in an entire season?

Answer: Brooklyn Dodgers/Tigers

All the other teams didn't last more than five seasons, but all existed in professional football at some point in history. The 1934 Dodgers went 4-7 in the season. Shipwreck Kelly was the lucky running back to score the only rushing touchdown. The Dodgers scored a measly five touchdowns from the air in the season also.

The franchise changed their name to the Brooklyn Tigers in the 1944 season, then closed their doors.
5. Which NFL team was the first to win three consecutive league championships?

Answer: Green Bay Packers

The Packers did this twice. The first time was from 1929-1931 under the guidance of Curly Lambeau. The Packers record in those three seasons was a combined 34-5-2. From 1965-1967, they did it again under the helm of Vince Lombardi. That combined record was 31-9-2. They would wait until 1996 before winning another championship.
6. Which team in 1984 set a NFL record by scoring three safeties in one game?

Answer: Rams

On September 30, the Los Angeles Rams pulled out three safeties against the New York Giants in Week 5. The Rams won the game 33-12. The Giants would get their revenge by defeating the Rams in the Wildcard game, but then lost to the 49ers in the Division Championship.
7. The first team in NFL history to score 30 touchdowns in a season from the ground was a record set in 1962 with 36. Which team did this?

Answer: Green Bay Packers

The Packers were NFL Champions in 1962. With the help of Jim Taylor's 19 rushing touchdowns, the Packers went 13-1 in the season. Quarterback Bart Starr had a career high of 2438 passing yards also, along with throwing another 12 touchdowns.
8. Which 1998 team tied a NFL record by committing 22 penalties in one game?

Answer: San Francisco 49ers

On October 4th in a game against the Buffalo Bills, the Steve Young led 49ers had 22 penalities, totaling an amazing 178 yards. The Bills had 12 penalities called against them in the game also. Buffalo won the game 26-21. The 49ers went on to go 12-4 in the season, winning a wildcard spot, then losing to the Falcons in the Division Championship.

In 1944, the Brooklyn Tigers set the initial record for 22 penalities in a game, then the Chicago Bears tied that record later in the same season.
9. Which team set a season scoring record in 2007 by compiling 589 points?

Answer: New England Patriots

This was the season of "Spygate", and Patriots head coach Bill Belichick wanted to make a 'point' by running up the score in every game possible. The Patriots went 16-0 in the regular season, including a Week 11 thrashing of the Bills 56-10. The Patriots would lose the Super Bowl to the Giants.
10. In 1966, which NFL team set a regular season record by scoring 72 points in one game?

Answer: Washington Redskins

In a game on November 27, the Redskins embarrassed the Giants 72-41. The Giants, although being sacked four times, still passed for 311 yards. They were also intercepted five times in the game.
