NFL Records Trivia Questions

1. Perhaps you've seen the infamous wrong-way run by the Minnesota Vikings when Jim Marshall scooped up a fumble and ran 66 yards into the wrong end zone, but do you remember what team the Vikings were playing?

From Quiz
Fascinating and Obscure Football Trivia, Part 5

Answer: San Francisco 49ers

October 25, 1964: "The Purple Gang's" defensive end Jim Marshall picked up a fumble by the San Francisco 49ers quarterback Billy Kilmer. Marshall made it to the end zone thinking he scored a touchdown and threw the ball in exaltation, which the referee then ruled was a safety-2 points for the 49ers. Marshall then discovered the mistake, especially when Bruce Bosley, a 49er player hugged him in the end zone, thanking him.

2. In 2023, The New York Jets' Sauce Gardner became the first rookie cornerback, in 41 years, to be named a First Team All-Pro. Who was that previous rookie cornerback, named to First Team All-Pro back in 1981?

From Quiz Fascinating and Obscure Football Trivia (Part 4)

Answer: Ronnie Lott

Sauce Gardner received 43 First Team votes and 7 Second Team votes from the Associated Press. Sauce told the press, "That's a big deal to me. It was one of my goals before training camp. It's something I pray for. I worked so hard for it. It's a true blessing for sure." Gardner's stats for the season included 75 tackles (51 solo tackles), two interceptions, and 20 passes defended which was a league-high. In 1981, Ronnie Lott was a first round draft pick by the San Francisco 49ers, and became a First Team All-Pro as a rookie and eventually became an NFL Hall of Famer.

3. What NCAA Division I football team was the first to win its first six games of the season, and then lose its next six regular season games, to finish the season at 6-6?

From Quiz Fascinating and Obscure Football Trivia (Part 2)

Answer: University of Illinois

In 2011, the Fighting Illini of the University of Illinois started out like a house on fire, going 6 wins and 0 losses. But then they lost the next six games to finish out with a 6-6 record. This ignominious ending to the season, cost coach Ron Zook his job, fired on November 27, after 7 seasons as the head coach there. They actually did win a Bowl game at the end of that season when a defensive coordinator was appointed interim head coach replacing Zook. They won the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl 20-14 against UCLA.

4. Who was the first NFL quarterback to pass for over 400 yards in three consecutive games?

From Quiz Fascinating and Obscure Football Trivia (Part 1)

Answer: Ryan Fitzpatrick

What?! Ryan Fitzpatrick!? Yes. Him. In 2018, while playing for the pre-Brady Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Fitzpatrick faced the Pittsburgh Steelers on a Monday night and made history as he passed for 411 yards. They lost the game 30-27 but it was Fitzpatrick's third consecutive game passing for over 400 yards, the first quarterback to do so. That same season he tied Dan Marino and Peyton Manning for having 4 games in a single season with 400 yards or more in those games.

5. Who was the first NFL quarterback to throw 3000 pass completions?

From Quiz The NFL 3000 Passing Club

Answer: Fran Tarkenton

The others never threw 3000 completions, and weren't close. Tarkenton played his career from 1961-1978. His first six seasons were with the Vikings, then five with the Giants before moving back to Minnesota for another seven seasons. He reached the 3000 plateau in 1976 with the Vikings, and retired with 3686 passes caught. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame 10 years later.

6. The first-ever pair of NFL teammates to rush 1000 yards each did it in 1972. One of the 1000-yard pair was Mercury Morris, but who was the other?

From Quiz Rush, Rush

Answer: Larry Csonka

The Dolphin's perfect 1972 season culminated in victory at Super Bowl VII, when they beat the Washington Redskins by 14 points to 7. This was coupled with the achievement of Morris and Csonka who became the very first 2000-yard pair. Originally, Morris was recorded as rushing 991 yards, but a league inquiry, requested by the team, led to his being awarded another 9 yards giving him an exact 1000. Csonka's total for the 1972 season was 1117 yards.

7. Walter Payton had a standout career with the Chicago Bears, scoring 125 touchdowns between 1975 and 1987. Where did he go to college?

From Quiz The NFL 100 Touchdown Club

8. Which 1970s NFL team was the first-ever team to rush for over 3000 yards in a season?

From Quiz NFL Team Records

Answer: Buffalo Bills

1973 was the season of O.J. Simpson and the Bills. He rushed for 2003 yards in the season, helping the team's total of 3088 rushing yards. The 1978 New England Patriots rushed for 3165 yards to break the Bills' record. The 1972 perfect-season Miami Dolphins, having two 1000-yard rushers in the names of Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris, fell 40 yards short of the 3000-yard mark.

9. In 2007, Detroit quarterback Jon Kitna was sacked 51 times to lead the league. It was still 25 sacks short of the season record, set in 2002 by which quarterback?

From Quiz NFL Potpourri

Answer: David Carr

Carr was bruised an amazing 76 times in 2002 with the no-name offensive line of the Houston Texans. He survived and came back for the 2003 season to be sacked only 15 times, but then was in the grinder again in 2004 with 49 sacks to lead the league. 2005 saw him sacked another 68 times to lead the league again in a Texans uniform. David left town and was a Carolina Panther in 2007.

10. In the 2006 season, which team shared the honor by having the most shutouts in the season?

From Quiz NFL Greats!

Answer: Jacksonville Jaguars

The others listed did not win over five games in the season, and the 2-12 Raiders were shutout three times themselves. The Jags went only 8-8 for the season, but still shutout the Steelers and Jets. The Ravens, Bears, and Jaguars, all tied for shutting out two opponents in the season.

11. This football player was the first ever to gain 1,000 yards rushing in a single season.

Answer: Beattie Feathers

Beattie Feathers gained 1,004 yards rushing on a record 8.4 yards a carry!

12. Who was the first player to rush for over 2,000 yards in a season?

From Quiz NFL Firsts

Answer: O.J. Simpson

Orenthal James Simpson is considered by most the best running back of his generation. In 1973, the Buffalo Bills superstar rushed for 2,003 yards in a 14 game season, setting an NFL record. Eric Dickerson broke Simpson's record in 1984 by rushing for 2,105 yards.

13. Who were the first two players to have 1000 yards rushing and receiving in the same season?

From Quiz NFL Records

Answer: Roger Craig and Marshall Faulk

14. Which team was the first to win consecutive Super Bowls on two occasions?

From Quiz Fascinating and Obscure Football Trivia, Part 5

Answer: Pittsburgh Steelers

The Packers were the first team to win two Super Bowls in a row, (1967 and 1968) and the Dolphins were the second (1973 and 1974). The Steelers were the third team to win two Super Bowls in a row: Super Bowl IX (1975) and Super Bowl X (1976), and then became the first team to win two consecutive Super Bowls for a second time: Super Bowl XIII (1979) and Super Bowl XIV (1980).

15. In the 2021 NFL season, which team became the first-ever to lose two games on game-winning field goals of over 50 yards, kicked by their opponents with no time left on the clock?

From Quiz Fascinating and Obscure Football Trivia (Part 2)

Answer: Detroit Lions

The Lions lost on Sunday, October 10th, to the Minnesota Vikings as kicker Greg Joseph booted a 54-yard field goal as time ran out, to give the Vikings a 19-17 victory over the Lions. It was the second time the Lions would lose in this manner that season, the first team ever to lose twice that way in one season. The first loss in this manner happened two weeks earlier as the Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker kicked a record-breaking 66-yard field goal as time expired to give Baltimore the win. Ironically the Lions lost in 1970 on a then record-setting 63-yard field by New Orleans Saints kicker Tom Dempsey. The score in that game? Also 19-17. The loss to the Vikings brought the hapless Lions record to 0-5.

16. The 2007 New England Patriots had a perfect regular season, only to lose Super Bowl XLII to which team?

From Quiz Undefeated: The Perfect Season

Answer: New York Giants

The 2007 Patriots had a perfect 16-0 record for the regular season, and went on to beat the Jaguars in the Divisional Championship (31-20) and the Chargers in the AFC Championship (21-12). They went into Super Bowl XLII with an 18-0 record, but they lost to the Giants in the Super Bowl by only three points! Interestingly enough, their final regular season game was actually against the Giants, and they won by only three points (38-35). The Giants finished their 2007 season with a record of 10-6. To make it to Super Bowl XLII, they beat the Buccaneers in the Wild Card Playoffs (24-14), the Cowboys in the Divisional Playoffs (21-17), and the Packers in the Conference Championship (23-20). This was their third year in a row to make the playoffs under the leadership of head coach Tom Coughlin.

17. Jerry Rice was an outstanding receiver in a NFL career which spanned 20 years. In 2002, he became the first player ever to score 200 career TDs. Which quarterback threw the pass that Rice caught for touchdown number 200?

From Quiz The NFL 100 Touchdown Club

Answer: Rich Gannon

Rich Gannon played for the Vikings, Chiefs, and Raiders. He threw 180 touchdown passes in a career which lasted from 1987 to 2004. Gannon and Rice were teammates on the Raiders from 2001 to 2004. Hasselback was Rice's quarterback for the Seahawks in 2004. Montana and Young were Rice's QBs with the 49ers.

18. From 1976-1977, which team set a NFL record by losing 26 consecutive games?

From Quiz NFL Team Records

Answer: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

1976 was the first season of the new Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They went 0-14. 1977 saw them lose another 12 games before experiencing their first win. In Week 13, they downed the Saints 33-14. The team's head coach was John McKay until 1984. In the 2002 season, the Buccaneers went 12-4 and went on to win their first Super Bowl, 48-21 against the Oakland Raiders.

19. Point after touchdowns (PATs) seem to be a frivolous item in the NFL. Which kicker set a NFL record by attempting 10 PATs in one game in the 1960s?

From Quiz NFL Greats!

Answer: Charlie Gogolak

The others listed were all wide receivers. Gogolak and the Washington Redskins defeated the New York Giants on November 27, 1966, and woke up with a sore leg the following day. The Redskins won the game, 72-41. The previous record was set and tied by the same kicker, Pat Harder of the Chicago Cardinals, who attempted nine in a game in both the 1948 and 1949 seasons.

20. Which star wideout never caught at least 100 passes in a single season?

From Quiz NFL--Odd Man Out

Answer: Andre Reed

Ed McCaffrey caught 101 balls in 2000 for the Broncos; Brown had 104 in 1997 for the Raiders; Monk caught 106 in 1984 for the Redskins. Andre Reed's highest career total was 90 receptions in 1994 for the Bills.

21. Who was the first running back to rush for 2000 yards in a season?

From Quiz Top of the Grid

Answer: O.J. Simpson

O.J. beat the others to the punch by more than a decade. 1973 was his year with the Buffalo Bills when he rushed for 2003 yards along with 12 TDs. Amazingly, he was used sparingly in the air as he caught only six passes for 70 yards in the season also.

22. Who was the first quarterback to throw for 5000 yards in a season?

From Quiz Dummies NFL

Answer: Dan Marino

The others listed barely made the 4000. Marino reached this unbelievable mark in 1984, throwing for 5084 yards. 18 of them went to Mark Clayton, eight to Mark Duper, six to Nat Moore, and five to Dolphin tight end Bruce Hardy. Marino threw a ridiculous 48 touchdowns in the season.

23. This football player passed for 4,000 yards for the first time ever.

From Quiz Big Firsts

Answer: Joe Namath

Joe Namath passed for 4,007 yards in 1967 while playing for the New York Jets.

24. Who was the first NFL player to play in 20 seasons for the same team?

From Quiz NFL Firsts

Answer: Jackie Slater

An offensive tackle drafted out of Jackson State by the Los Angeles Rams in 1976, Slater played in one game when the Rams moved to St. Louis in 1995, officially giving him 20 seasons in the league. George Blanda played 26 years (1949-1975) for the Bears, Oilers, and Raiders. Jan Stenerud played 19 years (1967-1985) for the Chiefs, Packers, and Vikings. Y.A. Tittle played from 1950 to 1964, mostly with the 49ers and Giants.

25. Which running back gained the most yards in one season?

From Quiz NFL Records: 20th Century

Answer: Eric Dickerson

Eric Dickerson had a great season of 2,105 yards in 1984 while playing for the Rams.

26. Justin Tucker kicked a 66-yard field goal in 2021 to break Matt Prater's NFL record of a 64-yard field goal in 2013. But who kicked the longest field goal ATTEMPT in the NFL, at 76 yards, coming up short in the process?

From Quiz Fascinating and Obscure Football Trivia, Part 5

Answer: Sebastian Janikowski

For years, Tom Dempsey, kicking with his half foot, held the NFL record with a 63-yard field goal in 1970. I was sad to see it broken for the first time with Prater's kick. A few other kickers have also tied Dempsey's 63-yarder, including Sebastian Janikowski. But as for the longest attempt? On September 28, 2008, with one second to go in the first half, the Oakland Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin called for Sebastian Janikowski to come on to attempt a field goal... of 76 yards. It fell short and the Raiders dodged a bullet because the opposing team had Antonio Cromartie down the field to attempt a run back of the missed field goal, but that never happened. Kiffin however, was fired two days later.

27. Which Super Bowl winning-coach used to coach basketball to a player who later became a College Football Hall of Fame coach?

From Quiz Fascinating and Obscure Football Trivia (Part 4)

Answer: Weeb Ewbank

Weeb Ewbank was a basketball coach for the JV squad at Brown University, a team that included amongst its players, Joe Paterno. Ewbank was also an assistant football coach at Brown under Rip Engle who went on to coach Penn State's football team, and was succeeded by the legendary Joe Paterno.

28. What do Tim Tebow, Colin Kaepernick, Johnny Manziel, and Cam Newton have in common?

From Quiz Fascinating and Obscure Football Trivia (Part 3)

Answer: Had at least 20 touchdowns in both rushing and passing in one college season

All four quarterbacks achieved the feat of 20 or more touchdowns in both rushing and receiving in one season. And amazingly, they all did it in the very same season: 2007. Tebow had 32 TDs passing and 23 TDs rushing for Florida. Kaepernick had 21 TDs passing and 20 rushing for Nevada. Manziel had 26 TDs passing and 21 rushing for Texas A&M, and Newton had 30 passing and 20 rushing for Auburn. Kapernick was a second round pick by the 49ers. Cam Newton had an outstanding quarterback rating his rookie year: 110.4. Tebow had more yards rushing than passing in his freshman year, but after that his passing yards were greater each year. The exact same thing goes for Cam Newton. Kaepernick's passing yards were more than his rushing every year of college, and so was Manziel's.

29. Which NCAA school was the first to have 7 quarterbacks who went on to play at least 10 years in the NFL?

From Quiz Fascinating and Obscure Football Trivia (Part 2)

Answer: Purdue University

The Purdue Boilermakers had seven quarterbacks graduate to the NFL who then played at least ten years as pros. They were: Len Dawson, who engineered a Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl victory in Super Bowl III, Bob Griese who led the Miami Dolphins in their perfect, undefeated season, Mike Phipps, Gary Danielson, Mark Hermann, Jim Everett, and Super Bowl winning Drew Brees who QB'ed the New Orleans Saints for so long, winning a Super Bowl against Peyton Manning's Indianapolis Colts. All those quarterbacks had NFL careers lasting 10 or more years. One might even say Purdue had 8 quarterbacks to fit the bill if you count Jeff George, but he only played his freshman year at Purdue before transferring to Illinois.

30. Since the 1970 NFL merger, a handful of quarterbacks have passed for over 400 yards in two consecutive games. Who was the first to do it?

From Quiz Fascinating and Obscure Football Trivia (Part 1)

Answer: Dan Fouts

Dan Fouts of the San Diego Chargers was the first to do so after the 1970 merger. On December 11, 1982 he passed for 444 yards against the San Francisco 49ers, and the next week on December 20 he passed for 435 yards against the Cincinnati Bengals. The other three on the list have also had consecutive 400+ passing weeks. Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins: December 2, 1984 for 470 yards against the Oakland Raiders, and December 9 for 404 yards against the Indianapolis Colts. Phil Simms of the New York Giants: October 6, 1985 for 432 yards against the Dallas Cowboys, and October 13 for 513 yards against the Cincinnati Bengals. Tom Brady of the New England Patriots: September 12, 2011 for 517 yards against the Miami Dolphins, and September 18 for 423 yards against the San Diego Chargers.
