Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who won the Stanley Cup?

Answer: Montreal Canadiens

Montreal and Los Angeles played in the finals, where Montreal won its 24th Stanley Cup. Pittsburgh won the year before, and New York won in the 1993-94 season.
2. Which player led the league in points?

Answer: Mario Lemieux

Lemieux scored 160 points in only 60 games ... incredible.
3. What were the four teams that played in the conference finals round of the playoffs (the last round before the finals)?

Answer: LA, MON, TOR, NYI

What's interesting about these four teams making the conference finals is the fact that each team was third place in their respective divisions during the regular season.
4. Which two expansion teams made their appearance during the season?

Answer: Tampa Bay, Ottawa

Tampa Bay had a successful season (by expansion standards), but Ottawa had a horrible first season, earning only 10 wins and a paltry 24 points during the season.
5. Along with Ottawa, which other team had a horrible season?

Answer: San Jose Sharks

San Jose had almost an identical season as Ottawa (10 wins 24 pts), with only one more win but tied with Ottawa for points earned. It was rumored that Ottawa tried tanking the last games (intentionally lose) to secure the 1st overall draft pick. Because San Jose finished with one more win, Ottawa got the first pick.

As a result of the aforementioned rumor, the NHL implemented a draft lottery system in which non-playoffs teams are given odds of earning the top pick based on their placement in the overall standings.
6. Which rookie tied Alexander Mogilny with a monster 76 goal season?

Answer: Teemu Selanne

Teemu Selanne scored 76 goals playing in all 84 games, whereas Mogilny scored the same but in 77 games.
7. Which team boasted four players who produced at least 100 points in the season?

Answer: Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh had Mario Lemieux (160 points), Kevin Stevens (111 points), Rick Tocchet (109 points), and Ron Francis (100 points). Other point-per-game producers but who didn't break 100 points included Jaromir Jagr (94 points), Larry Murphy (85 points), and Joe Mullen (70 points). Oddly enough the team didn't lead the league in total goals scored. That honor went to Detroit.
8. Which referee is infamously known as the ref who shaped the outcome of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Los Angeles Kings third round matchup in the playoffs?

Answer: Kerry Fraser

During game 6 of the playoffs Fraser didn't call Wayne Gretzky on an obvious high stick which caused bleeding on Doug Gilmour (which would be a 5 minute penalty). During the time that Gretzky should've been in the penalty box he scored causing the game to be won by LA who then forced a game 7 in which they won as well.

This incident sparked a large conspiracy theory that it was intentional because the NHL doesn't want an all Canadian finals (Montreal already won their round) due to the hit to its TV ratings. Fraser has since acknowledged his missed call and said he was wrong.
9. How many players scored at least 100 points in the season?

Answer: 21

21 players from 14 teams had 100+ point seasons.
10. Which player set a record for regular season games played with 86 games played in a 84 game season?

Answer: Jimmy Carson

Jimmy Carson played for Detroit and appeared in the teams first 52 games before he got traded to the Los Angeles Kings. At that time LA played two fewer games in its season then Detroit did and Carson appeared in all of LA's games. Since then the NHL season has been shrunken to 82 games so this is a record that will likely never be broken.
11. Which team boasted three defensemen who each scored at least 20 goals?

Answer: Washington Capitals

Leading the way was Kevin Hatcher, who had 34 goals. Al Iafrate scored 25 goals and Sylvain Cote scored 21 goals. Calle Johansson didn't score 20 goals but did total 45 points, which gave Washington four defensemen to score at least 40 points in the same season. That's a lot of offense from your defense.
12. Which coach won the Jack Adams Trophy?

Answer: Pat Burns

Pat Burns was coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and was hired by then GM Cliff Fletcher. During the previous season he coached the Montreal Canadiens. He installed a defense first philosophy that resonated well with the team, causing them to have their best season in decades and getting within one round of the Stanley Cup finals.

He won the Jack Adams Trophy a total of three times, earning it in Montreal and Boston. He won the Stanley Cup coaching the New Jersey Devils in the 2002-03 season.

In 2005 he retired due to recurring cancer, which ultimately claimed his life in 2010. He was posthumously inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2014. May he RIP.
13. Which team entered the history books by playing Manon Rheaume in an exhibition game, thus her becoming the first woman to play in a NHL game?

Answer: Tampa Bay Lightning

In what was surely a publicity stunt for the new team (and later confirmed as such) Manon Rheaume played one period in an exhibition game against the St. Louis Blues, and allowed 2 goals on 9 shots. She never played a regular season NHL game in her career.
14. Which goaltender set NHL records in assists and points earned in a single game by a goalie when his team absolutely clobbered the San Jose Sharks by a score of 13-1?

Answer: Jeff Reese

Jeff Reese played for the Calgary Flames as the backup goalie to Mike Vernon.
15. Which rookie goalie earned his first shutout against the Montreal Canadiens?

Answer: Felix Potvin

Felix Potvin was a rooke for the Toronto Maple Leafs but grew up a fan of Montreal. In his first game against Montreal his team won 4-0 earning him a shutout against his childhood idol, Patrick Roy.
16. This was the last season before the NHL switched its names of conferences and divisions from the names of past important figures to directionals. Which of these names was *not* a name of a division during the season?

Answer: Calder

Norris is named after James Norris. Smythe is names after Conn Smythe. Adams is named after Jack Adams. The other division is called Patrick, named after Lester Patrick. Calder is the name of the trophy for the league's best rookie, and is named after Frank Calder.
17. How many teams were there?

Answer: 24

6 teams per division x 2 divisions in a conference x 2 conferences = 24 teams.
18. Twenty teams in the league scored at least three goals per game, but only two allowed fewer then three goals a game, Who were they?

Answer: Chicago Blackhawks, Toronto Maple Leafs

Chicago and Toronto both played in the Norris division, with Chicago earning 106 points. Ed Belfour had a stellar year as their starting goalie. Toronto earned 99 points with rookie sensation Felix Potvin playing so well that the team traded future Hall of Fame goalie Grant Fuhr to Buffalo.
19. Which city lost its NHL team at the conclusion of the season?

Answer: Minnesota

After this season, the Minnesota North Stars moved to Dallas and were re-named the Stars. No worries though, a new Minnesota team was eventually formed, called the Wild, and joined the league during the 2000-01 season. Seasons later, Quebec City's team moved to Colorado, and Winnipeg's team moved to Arizona.
20. Which prospect was chosen first overall by the Ottawa Senators during the draft at the conclusion of the season?

Answer: Alexander Daigle

Daigle was considered a can't miss player, a superstar-in-waiting. Ottawa was even accused of intentionally losing games in order to being able to draft him. His initial contract was a mammoth one for a rookie, which incidentally helped lead the push towards a cap for rookie contracts.

He scored 51 points during his first year but fazed away rather quickly and never managed to do better then that during his 616 game career (he earned 327 points). In his arrogance upon being drafted he infamously quipped he was glad he was drafted number 1 because no one remembers number 2.

The second prospect drafted was Chris Pronger, who had a much lengthier career, was an all-star, won the Stanley Cup, and was inducted into the hall of fame.
