Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who led the league with 106 points, winning the Art Ross Trophy?

Answer: Peter Forsberg

Forsberg picked up 29 goals and 77 assists in only 75 games. Naslund had 104 points, Thornton had 101, and Hejduk had 98. Going into the last day of the regular season, Naslund was up one point over Forsberg, but Forsberg picked up 3 points, the last an empty net goal, while Naslund and the Canucks got shut out.
2. Who led the league in goals scored with 50, winning the Richard Trophy?

Answer: Milan Hejduk

Hejduk scored his 50th on the last day of the regular season with a powerplay goal. Bertuzzi had 46, third in the league (Naslund had 48), and Hossa had 45. Iginla won the award in 2001-2002, but only had 35 in 2002-2003.
3. Which Ottawa Senator emerged as a top goal scorer in the 2002-2003 season?

Answer: Marian Hossa

Hossa scored 45 goals in 2002-2003. He had been a consistent 30 goal scorer for the past three seasons. Interestingly, another Marian, Marian Gaborik, started out the season very well, leading the league in goals scored for about the first half of the season (he was the first to score 20), but dwindled afterwards, only totalling 30.
4. The two players who tied for the league lead in plus/minus were teammates?

Answer: True

Peter Forsberg and Milan Hejduk of the Colorado Avalanche, were both +52, +12 more than Nicklas Lidstrom, who was third best in the category.
5. Who was the highest scorer who finished the season with a minus rating?

Answer: Mario Lemieux

Lemiuex had 91 points but was -25 in 67 games. It was his worst year in +/- terms since his rookie season of 1984-1985, when he was -35. Both Heatley and Iginla were minus players, but they scored less than Lemieux. Naslund scored more, but was +6.
6. Who was the highest scorer who was traded during the 2002-2003 season?

Answer: Alexei Kovalev

Kovalev was traded from Pittsburgh to the Rangers, in an obvious and unfortunate salary dump. He picked up 77 points, 20th in the league. Carter also went to the Rangers, but from Edmonton, scoring a total of 60 points. Nolan had a very disappointing season in San Jose before he was dealt to Toronto, and he finished a season when many thought he could battle for the scoring title with only 54 points. Amonte was in much the same position, being picked up by Phoenix in the offseason only to be traded to Philadelphia at the deadline.

He totalled just 51 points.
7. Who was the highest scorer who was acquired during the offseason?

Answer: Vyacheslav Kozlov

Kozlov came to the Thrashers from the Sabres, no doubt surprising many with a 70 point season with the Thrashers. Cassels was a close second, scoring 68 points with the Blue Jackets and helping to revitalize Geoff Sanderson after being signed as a free agent. Guerin was brought to Dallas to be a goal scorer, but injury shortened his season, and he only managed 50 points in 64 games. Holik was a disappointment for the Rangers having come from the Devils.

He only had 35 points in 64 games.
8. Who was the highest scoring rookie?

Answer: Henrik Zetterberg

Zetterberg picked up 44 points with Detroit, Nash had 39 with Columbus, and Kapanen had 34 with Dallas. Jackman, a defenseman, had 19 points but was +23, second only among rookies to Kapanen's +25.
9. Of the top four highest scorers listed below, who scored the fewest points during the 2001-2002 regular season?

Answer: Peter Forsberg

This was sort of a trick question. Forsberg did not even play in the 2001-2002 regular season due to injury, and only returned for the playoffs. Naslund was second highest in 2001-2002, with 90 points. Thornton had a breakout year in 2002-2003, having only 68 points the previous season. Hejduk had 44 points in 2001-2002.
10. Who scored seven points, the highest single game point total of the year, in a 12-2 blowout?

Answer: Jaromir Jagr

Jagr had not been playing at the level of the highest paid player in the NHL, until he picked up 3 goals and 4 assists in a pummeling of the Florida Panthers on January 11, 2003. His performance shot him up in the points race, and he finished the rest of the season strongly.
