Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you add the numbers of Eli Manning and Jeff Hostetler, then subtract the number of Phil Simms, you end up with the number of what Hall of Fame quarterback who played for the Giants from 1961 to 1964?

Answer: Y.A. Tittle

Eli (10) plus Hostetler (15) minus Simms (11) gives Tittle's number 14. Yelberton Abraham (Y.A.) Tittle played for the Giants from 1961 to 1964, after coming over from the San Francisco 49ers. Although he led the Giants to division crowns in 1961, 1962, and 1963, the NFL Championship eluded him.
2. Can you provide the number of Hall of Fame defensive lineman Andy Robustelli, which now can only be worn by two positions on offense?

Answer: 81

In today's NFL, numbers from 80 to 89 are worn by wide receivers and tight ends. In the earlier days of the league, numbers were randomly given regardless of position.
3. What number did Lawrence Taylor wear during his Hall of Fame career?

Answer: 56

Coming out of the University of North Carolina, Taylor combined extraordinary speed and brute strength to the position of outside linebacker. Taylor finished his Hall of Fame career with 131 sacks. However, he should have had 140-1/2. Sacks did not become an official statistic until his second season. The 9-1/2 he had during his rookie campaign did not count.
4. Over the years, many Giants have worn number 53. Which Hall of Fame player wore it for 13 seasons starting in 1976?

Answer: Harry Carson

Often you will see players dump Gatorade on the coach when victory is imminent. This started with Harry Carson during the 1986 season and culminated with the Giant's victory over Denver in Super Bowl XXI.
5. What number did Phil Simms choose to wear during his long Giant career?

Answer: 11

Phil Simms came from tiny Morehouse College to become the seventh pick in the 1979 draft. He overcame injuries during the early years of his career to become the MVP of Super Bowl XXI, in which he completed 22 of 25 passes. In retirement, he became an excellent game analyst.
6. What number did Giant great Michael Strahan wear during his storied career?

Answer: 92

In Michael's final season, the 7- time Pro Bowl player helped the Giant's upset the previously undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. His post playing career consisted of being a studio analyst and acting in television and commercials.
7. What number was on kicker Lawrence Tynes' back when he booted the Giants into Super Bowl XLII?

Answer: 9

Tynes had missed a couple of attempts that would have won the game in regulation. In OT, Brett Favre was picked off by Corey Webster, and the Giant's offense then drove into field goal range. Before coach Tom Coughlin had a chance to decide to kick or go for a first down, Tynes ran on to the field and kicked the Giants into the Super Bowl.
8. What number was retired by the Giants in honor of the great Frank Gifford?

Answer: 16

The Giffer began his Hall of Fame career on the field in 1952 and ended it in 1964. He then followed this with a long broadcasting career including many years on "Monday Night Football".
9. What number was Kerry Collins wearing when he led the Giants to Super Bowl XXXV?

Answer: 5

Collins was a number draft pick 1 of the Carolina Panthers, but alcohol problems led to him being waived by a couple of teams. The Giants signed him as a reclamation project and were rewarded with a Super Bowl berth by a clean and sober Collins.
10. What retired number did Hall of Fame player Mel Hein wear?

Answer: 7

Mel was a two-way player during his career, playing both center and linebacker. In addition to the Hall of Fame, Mel was named on the all Decade Player for the 1930s, and was named to the NFLs 75th Anniversary All-Time Team.
