Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It happened in 2004: who became the first driver to win the pole for the Cup race on Friday, win the Busch series race on Saturday and win the Cup race on Sunday?

Answer: Joe Nemechek

In October 2004 at Kansas Speedway Joe Nemechek did the unthinkable and won the pole, Busch race, and Cup race in one weekend.
2. In 2001, Derrike Cope formed Quest Motor Racing with what famous drag racer?

Answer: Warren Johnson

The first year the team struggled mightily without qualifying for one race. Derrike Cope is most famous for winning the 1990 Daytona 500.
3. Who was the youngest driver to make a start in Cup series history?

Answer: Bobby Hillin Jr.

At the ripe old age of 17, Bobby Hillin Jr. qualified a Buick owned by his grandfather at North Wilkesboro Speedway in 1982. He finished 21st.

This record will never be broken, as Nascar rules require a minimum age of 18 years to start (this rule was introduced at the start of the 2002 season).
4. Which former Nascar driver won the Karting World Championship in 1978 over Formula 1 great Ayrton Senna?

Answer: Lake Speed

Lake Speed finished his career with 1 career win in the 1988 Transouth 500 at Darlington.
5. Skeet Ulrich, of the TV show 'Jericho' and also the movie 'Scream' fame, is the nephew of which Nascar great?

Answer: Ricky Rudd

D.K. Ulrich is his stepfather.
6. Who won the 2003 Busch series Rookie Of The Year award, even though he only started 18 out of (35) races?

Answer: David Stremme

David finished the year with 7 top 10 finishes and 3 top 5s, enough points to win the ROTY award from Coy Gibbs (who ran a full schedule).
7. Which of these drivers had the most starts in the cup series without garnering a win?

Answer: J.D. McDuffie

JD finished his career with 653 starts in the Cup series. Sadly, we lost JD to a crash at Watkins Glen raceway in 1991.
8. Who was the first driver to ever receive the "Lucky Dog" pass?

Answer: Todd Bodine

This feat happened on September 21, 2003 at Dover Speedway. Ryan Newman also received a Lucky Dog pass later on in the same race, and went on to win the race.

The Lucky Dog pass happens when there's a caution -- the first driver who's a lap down automatically gets his lap back (he's allowed to go arund the track and be at the rear of the field on the lead lap). It was introduced by Nascar in 2003 for some races and, by 2006, was used for all Nascar races.
9. Which former Major League Baseball player co-owned a Busch series team with Bobby Hillin Jr. in the late 1990s?

Answer: Mark Mcgwire

In 1999, he finished 19th in the point standings.
10. Which of these drivers was the oldest Cup race winner?

Answer: Harry Gant

At the age of 52 years, 7 months, and 6 days, Harry won his last race of his career at Michigan speedway in August of 1992.
