Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nebraska is well known for its use of the 'redshirt' rule, which allows a player to sit out a year, though he can practice with the team. Which All-American lineman is credited with being the first Cornhusker redshirt?

Answer: Warren Alfson

Alfson from Wisner, NE, was a Depression-era high school graduate who worked for several years in order to pay his tuition (for many years, NU gave out no scholarships for sports). After his freshman year, he requested that he be allowed to sit out a year to get himself in better shape.

It worked, because he was twice named first team Big Six Conference, and was first team All-America guard in 1940 (when he was twenty-six years old).
2. What was Tom Osborne's jersey number when he played for the Washington Redskins?

Answer: 84

Tom quit professional football to pursue his doctorate, and because his future in pro football (especially with the then-miserable Redskins) was far from promising.
3. Bob Devaney had a losing record against Oklahoma?

Answer: True

The Sooners would also prove to be a huge barrier for Osborne and Solich, too.
4. Why were the Cornhuskers invited to the 1955 Orange Bowl, despite a 6-4 season record?

Answer: Oklahoma could not go, do to a "no repeat" bowl clause

The Cornhuskers, who finished second in the Big Seven behind the unbeaten Sooners, were humiliated by Duke, 34-7, in Miami. The "no-repeat" clause was soon eliminated after the mismatch.
5. What ABC college football announcing team covered the 1971 Nebraska/Oklahoma, "Game of the Century"?

Answer: Chris Schenkel and Bud Wilkinson

Bud's prediction that the Cornhuskers would have trouble with play-action passes would prove prophetic, as the Sooner passing game almost carried them to victory.
6. While Nebraska was being embarrassed in the '55 Orange Bowl by Duke, what other Nebraska state college/university won that year's Tangerine Bowl?

Answer: Omaha University

Omaha U (now the University of Nebraska-Omaha), oddly enough became the first Cornhusker state school to win a bowl game.
7. Which school did Johnny Rodgers claim he WOULD have attended, had the coach offered him a scholarship?

Answer: Southern California

USC's legendary coach, John McKay, also missed out on having Tom Osborne as a graduate assistant. McKay and USC turned Rodgers down due to his size, as they didn't feel he was rugged enough to handle being a Pac-8 running back.
8. In the 20th century, Johnny Rodgers was the leader in career receptions at Nebraska. Who was a bit of a surprise at #2?

Answer: Jeff Kinney

Oddly, the 1971 All-American running back ranked higher as a career pass-receiver than he did in career rushing stats.
9. What school threatened to drop Nebraska from the '61 schedule, due to a recruit transferring to NU after initially registering with the other school the year before?

Answer: Minnesota

The recruit Coach Jennings snuck out of the Gopher State was Dennis Claridge, who became Bob Devaney's first great quarterback, and led the Cornhuskers to two bowl victories.
10. During his rocky five years at Nebraska, what unusual formation was Pete Jennings best known for?

Answer: Tandem T--two quarterbacks under center

The only time this was attempted, Nebraska was called for illegal procedure, and it never returned to the Cornhusker playbook. Jennings was also known (or notorious) for punting on third down, if the situation looked grim which often happened, unforutnately.
