Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team won the inagural Ranfurly shield?

Answer: Auckland

The first holder was to be the union with the best record for the 1902 season.
Auckland, with an unbeaten record, was declared the first winner of the Ranfurly Shield.

Incidentally, the shield should have been a 'cup', designed for a soccer competition, and the centre piece then had to be altered.
2. How many test matches did Stu Wilson captain?

Answer: 2

The outspoken winger, in 1983, captained NZ twice.
3. What year did the first ever test match between NZ & South Africa take place?

Answer: 1921

It was 13th August, 1921, NZ triumphed 13-5 at Carisbrook. The series was drawn 1-1 (SA won 2nd test 9-5 at Eden Park, while the 3rd test was a gruelling 0-0 draw at Athletic Park!)
The team for the first test was ;
Prop Bill Duncan
Prop Ned Hughes
Lock Jim Moffitt
Lock Jock Richardson
Flanker Moke Belliss
Flanker Richard Fogarty
Scrum Half Ginger Nicholls
Fly Half Cecil Badeley
Right Wing Percival Storey
Centre George Aitken (c)
Centre Marcus Nicholls
Left Wing John Steel
Fullback Nipper Kingstone

Whom I had heard of none, sadly!
4. Which of these greats was captain of the All Black's for the longest period, in years?

Answer: Wilson Whineray

Wilson Whineray was captain from 1958-1965 (7 years)
Sean Fitzpatrick was captain from 1992-1997 (5 years)
Brian Lochore was captain from 1966-1970 (4 years)
Guy Porter was captain from 1925-30 (5 years)
5. An easy one - Which former All Black forward was the only one to feature in the top 10 of all time drop goal scorers in NZ rugby?

Answer: Zinzan Brooke

Having scored 3 drop goals in his illustrious career, Zinzan is listed as 7th on NZ's list, pretty remarkable when I look further down the list and there don't seem to be any other forwards.
Mehrts leads on 10, while Fox is next on 7.
6. In the 1985 NPC, what did Auckland, Taranaki & North Harbour have in common?

Answer: All won NPC titles

They all won the NPC titles, Auckland 1st div, Taranaki 2nd div and North Harbour 3rd div.
7. What was the most tries the All Blacks have ever scored against the Wallabies?

Answer: 9

12th September 1936, 38-13, 9 tries.

Hart G.F. 2 tries
Mitchell N.A. 2 tries
Rankin J.G. 2 tries
Reid S.T. 2 tries
Watt J.M. 1 try

On the other hand, the Wallabies best effort against NZ was 5, 9th Sept 1978, 16-30. This Wallaby team comprised of players like 'Buddha Handy' 'Paddy Batch' and 'Snakebite McKid'!
8. South Canterbury has successfully defended the Ranfurly Shield.

Answer: True

They have played 3 matches in Ranfurly Shield history as a holder, and won 1 match, thus defending it.
9. Which All Black became the 1000th man to pull on the fabled Black jersey?

Answer: Carl Hayman

At the time,17th June, 2001, the massive Otago prop, was sporting a beard which made him look as though he has just walked out from the bush! The All Blacks ran out comfortable winners against Samoa 50-6.
But Hayman will go down in history as the 1000th member of an exclusive club!
Although, Ranby and Holah were also very close to achieving this honour!
10. In the Super 12, in 1997, the Auckland Blues went through the whole season undefeated but they did not win every game as the 2002 Crusaders did. Who did they draw against?

Answer: N. Transvaal Blue Bulls

This was a thrill a minute game, with the final scores locked at 40-40. I would have thought a season of S12 unbeaten would go unmatched, but the Crusaders of 2002 went one better by winning every game, with an average score of 42-23, including the record score against second placed NSW of 96-19!
