Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the famous error caused by English journalists that coined the name All Blacks (the intended words)?

Answer: All Backs

The newspaper intended for the paper to read, "They played as all backs" because the team had gone on a try-scoring frenzy in their previous match.
2. What country is the provincial side Munster in?

Answer: Ireland

The only side to have managed to defeat the All Blacks in 1978, where the Grand Slam was only partial.
3. What was the controversy in the 1905 Grand Slam attempt?

Answer: The "winning" try wasn't awarded as the ball was moved back from the try line

Bob Deans had scored the try and had gotten up to celebrate the try that would have won the "Originals" match, and respectively the Grand Slam. However, the referee was wearing inappropriate clothing and was 40m from the play. A Welsh player took the chance to move the ball back before the line, and the try was not awarded.
4. When was the first Grand Slam attempt?

Answer: 1905

This was the fabled Originals side which won all but one of their games to Wales in a spark of controversy. Neither side has admitted fault or reached other agreements over the matter.
5. What was unusual about the All Blacks game against Munster in 2008?

Answer: Two hakas were performed

The members of Munster who were formerly All Blacks, performed a haka of their own. Also the players were far from being booed as the All Black kickers were put off by the silence, when kickers were about to be kicked out of respect by the Munster fans.
6. What is the national emblem on the Welsh rugby shirts?

Answer: Three Ostrich feathers

Unlike South Africa, the Welsh shirt has no national flag on it, nor a major national emblem, like the All Blacks' Silver fern and no nation has a portrait of a person on it. The three ostrich feathers are the symbol of the Prince of Wales or the Sovereign Prince of Wales in the British monarchy.
7. Why was France banned from the tournament in 1930?

Answer: Player violence

France inititally joined the tournament in 1910, but had gone through too many warnings since. Finally in 1930, they were banned from the tournament, and did not play in it again until 1947.
8. Which Grand Slam tour involved the 30 year anniversary of Munster's famous defeat of the All BLacks?

Answer: 2008

Munster as of that tour remained the only side in Ireland or Scotland (including national sides) to beat the All Blacks.
9. The Grand Slam tours are generally in which months?

Answer: November-December

The tours by Northern sides are generally referred to as the June Internationals and the End of year tour encapsulating the Grand Slam and various other Northern tours.
10. What is it called when a British country completes a clean sweep, with victories over all three other "home nations"?

Answer: Triple Crown

This occurs now in the Six Nations trophy where a true Grand Slam occurs when all five countries in the competition other than itself is beaten. Where it beats all three other British sides and France and Italy. Although the Six Nations Grand Slam can be completed by France and Italy as well as just the British sides.
