With the advent of professional rugby union in England in 1995 the club split into two - professional and amateur. A local businessman Sir John Hall bought the club and changed the name to Newcastle Falcons. Gosforth RFC continued as an amateur club with the origiabnl club coulous, green and white.

The Falcons can trace their history back to 1877 when a group of former pupils from Durham School set up a rugby club in the Gosforth area of Newcastle. The team played as Gosforth FC until 1990 when it became Newcastle Gosfoth FC. When rugby turned professional in1995 it split into two - Newcastle Falcons (professional) and Gosforth RFC (amateur). Gosforth RFC continued to play in the original green and white colours, and Newcastle Falcons adopted black and white as the club colours.
