Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ty Cobb set many records in his career, and he ended up in the Hall of Fame. What was his nickname?

Answer: Georgia Peach

Born in Georgia, Cobb played from 1905-1928. All but two of his seasons were with the Tigers, then his last two with the Philadelphia Athletics. He won 11 batting titles, and was runner-up another three times. Cobb retired in 1928 with a .366 career average, the highest in baseball.
2. Orel Hershiser played most of his career with the Dodgers. He earned his nickname because he was ready to pitch, no matter what day it was. What was his nickname?

Answer: Bulldog

Hershiser would either start, or come from the bullpen in his 'off days', he didn't care. He won the Cy Young in 1988. Orel also played for the Indians, Giants, and Mets. After retiring in 2000 with 204 wins, he went into sports broadcasting.
3. Cal Ripken Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles was nicknamed "Iron Man" for his consecutive game streak. The player whose game record he broke was nicknamed "Iron Horse". Who was that Yankee great?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

The others never had the honor of wearing the pinstripes. Gehrig was a 1923 Yankee rookie, spent his entire career with them, and retired in 1939. He also had the nickname, "Biscuit Pants". He died in 1941.
4. From 1940-1958, Harold Reese was a Dodger shortstop and was a 10-time all-star. He eventually made it to the Hall of Fame. What was his nickname?

Answer: Pee Wee

Harold Henry "Pee Wee" Reese went to the hall in 1984. He went to seven World Series with the Dodgers, and every series was against the Yankees. This is why he came up with only one win in 1955. Pee Wee had two World Series home runs to his credit. He died in 1999.
5. A career Baltimore Oriole pitcher, he won three Cy Young awards. Who is this Hall of Famer nicknamed, "Cakes"?

Answer: Jim Palmer

The others were not career Orioles, and never won a Cy Young award. Palmer played from 1965-1984. His Cy Young awards came in 1973, 1975, and 1976. He kept the great Nolan Ryan from winning one in 1973. Palmer would have had nine consecutive 20-win seasons if it were not for his 7-12 record in 1974. The hall took him in 1990.
6. Baseball's first four-time Cy Young winner was Steve Carlton. What was his nickname?

Answer: Lefty

"Lefty" because he was left-handed, and a good one at that. He spent most of his career with the Cardinals and the Phillies. He retired in 1988 with 329 wins. An easy and quick inductee, the hall took him in 1994.
7. This Hall of Fame pitcher played in 634 games as a Giant, and his final one as a Cincinnati Red. Who was this nicknamed "Big Six" and "The Christian Gentleman"?

Answer: Christy Mathewson

The others never played for the Giants or Reds. Mathewson played from 1908-1916. 372 wins were with the Giants, and his sole game with the Reds gave him number 373. He led the league five times with the lowest ERA, five times in strikeouts, and four times in shutouts. 1936 saw the Hall of Fame take him, 11 years after his death at 45 years of age.
8. Ty Cobb would have won 13 consecutive batting titles if Nap Lajoie didn't interrupt his streak, along with another Hall of Famer nicknamed the "Grey Eagle". Who was this?

Answer: Tris Speaker

From 1907-1919, Cobb won the AL batting title in every season except for 1910 when Lajoie won it, and in 1916 when Speaker won it. All the other seasons belonged to Cobb. He was the runner-up both times, and lost to Lajoie in 1910 by .001 of a point.
9. After 15 seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, Paul Molitor found himself in the World Series as a Toronto Blue Jay, and won the series MVP award. What is his nickname?

Answer: The Ignitor

After playing with the Brewers from 1978-1992, he signed as a free agent with Toronto. In the 1993 World Series against the Phillies, Paul had two doubles, two triples, two home runs, and six singles. He batted .500 and had eight RBIs. Molitor retired as a Twin in 1998. He was a 2004 hall inductee.
10. Leo Durocher played from 1925-1945, mostly as a shortstop. He later became a manager with the Brooklyn Dodgers and earned his nickname of what?

Answer: Leo the Lip

Durocher was very vocal with umpires. On one occasion, Leo came charging out of the dugout after an umpire called his Dodger player out on a tag. Leo yelled, "Are you (expletive) blind?" The umpire replied, "What did you say to me"? Leo yelled back, "My God, you're deaf too"! Durocher was ejected, his one of many times being given the boot. Leo was a 1994 Hall of Fame inductee for his 2000+ wins as a manager, three years after his death.
