Alston managed the Dodgers ffrom 1954 to 1976, when illness struck him.
2. In what year did the Chicago Cubs win their first World Series?

Answer: 1907

In 1907 under the guidance of manager Frank Chance, the Cubs went to the World Series with a record of 107-45 to play the Detroit Tigers. The Cubs won it by beating the Tigers 4-0-1. They tied the first game in 12 innings 3-3.
3. How many years must a player be inactive before he can be placed on the Baseball Writers Association Hall of Fame ballot?

4. How many times has a team picked-off three runners in one inning, between 1900-2000?

Answer: 1

It happened in 1983, when Baltimore reliever Tippy Martinez zapped three Blue Jays. In 2001, Minnesota also picked-off three Devil Rays in one inning.

In the 1960 World Series it was the bat of Bill Virdon of the Pirates that took out Tony Kubek of the Yankees. This eventually led to hammering Yankee pitcher Bobby Shantz for a five-run inning. Bill Mazeroski topped the bottom of the ninth with his famous game winning home run.

Yankee pitcher Ralph Terry dished up Maz's shot in the bottom of the ninth inning. Bobby Shantz pitched in the eighth and gave up 5 runs to Pittsburgh.

Sandberg won 9 Gold Gloves throughout his career with the Cubs, all as a second-baseman. He played third base for 133 games in 1982. That year the great Mike Schmidt was honored with the Gold Glove.

Answer: The teams traded players after the first game

In the game between the Cubs and Cardinals, after the first game the Cubs traded right fielder Max Flack to the Cardinals in exchange for Cardinal outfielder Cliff Heathcote. In the second game Flack went went 1-for-4 for the Cardinals and Heathcote of the Cubs was 2-for-4 with their new team.

There were no left-handed shortstops in the Major League.
10. Frank 'Home Run' Baker played in the Majors from 1908 to 1922. Why did he not play during the 1920 season?

Answer: His wife was ill and died

Home Run Baker also sat out the 1915 season because he refused a raise in salary with the A's. In 1920 he attended his wife who was gravely ill and eventuall died. He was at that time a Yankee. He played for two more years before retiring. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1955.
