Nightmare Baseball Trivia Questions

1. The modern-day Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) began presentations in 1931. Who was the first shortstop to win the award?

From Quiz
A Nightmare of a Challenge [3]

Answer: Marty Marion

Marion was a St. Louis Cardinal in 1944. He won the award over Bill Nicholson, Dixie Walker, and Stan Musial. Both Marion and Musial helped the Cardinals to the World Series, and defeated the St. Louis Browns. Before 1931 there was the Chalmers Award (1911-1914) and the League Awards (1922-1929). Roger Peckinpaugh (Washington Senators SS) won the League Award in 1925.

2. Which National League umpire died of heart attack on Opening Day in 1997?

From Quiz A Nightmare of a Challenge [2]

Answer: John McSherry

McSherry was the home plate umpire on Opening Day on April 1st in a game with the Reds hosting the Expos. With only seven pitches into the game, John motioned to his second base umpire with an unrecognizable gesture, then collapsed behind home plate. The game was postponed, and Cincinnati owner Marge Schott threw a fit because she wanted the game to take place on "her Opening Day".

3. Who was the first pitcher in baseball history to win 50 games in a season?

From Quiz A Nightmare of a Challenge [1]

Answer: Al Spalding

Spalding was with the Boston Red Stockings of the National Association. Boston watched the Philadelphia Athletics win the first NA pennant in 1871. Then the Red Stockings won it all from 1872-1875, until the league folded and became the National League in 1876. Spalding was there in 1874 when he went 52-16. He repeated this feat in 1875 by going 54-5. He joined the new Chicago White Stockings of the National League in 1876 and went 47-12. After four games in 1877, Al walked away from the game. His career record was 251-65 in six full seasons. He died in 1915.

4. The five inaugural Hall of Fame inductees in 1936, in alphabetical order were Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth, and Honus Wagner. Which one had their name on the most ballots to be inducted?

From Quiz The Nightmare Challenge of Baseball [1]

Answer: Ty Cobb

There were 226 members of the Baseball Writers Association of America who voted on a list of 33 possible inductees. Cobb led the group by being on 222 ballots. He played his entire career with the Tigers and Athletics.

5. In what year were foul balls first counted as strikes?

From Quiz The Ultimate Baseball Nightmare!

Answer: 1903

The foul ball rule changes in 1903 were made to help create more strikeouts, as baseball officials deemed they were too infrequent. This was in contrast to early days when pitchers ruled the mound, which was only 50 feet away from home plate. Matt Kilroy of the Baltimore Orioles in the American Association, once struck out 513 batters in a season. With so many rule changes for pitchers, the field belonged to the batters. Some changes in the 1880s gave some authority back to the pitchers, allowing the pitcher to throw overhand, letting their hand come above their waste when the ball was released. Another change was that a batter struck out with three strikes, instead of four.

6. The Hall of Fame inductions in 2000 saw which baseball great receive the most votes?

From Quiz A Real Baseball Nightmare [6]

Answer: Carlton Fisk

The others had already been inducted into the hall. Fisk was the highest vote receiver in 2000 by obtaining 397 of 499 votes. Tony Perez, mainly with the Cincinnati Reds was second in 2000.

7. Which pitcher set a record for giving up 14 hits in a game and still pitched a shutout?

From Quiz A Real Baseball Nightmare [4]

Answer: Milt Gaston

Gaston, while pitching for the Washington Senators gave up 14 hits against Cleveland on July 10, 1928, and still did the shutout thing. Milt went 6-12 in the season and threw three shutouts.

8. In 20 consecutive seasons, this pitcher was the first in history to strike out 100+ batters in a season. Who was he?

From Quiz A Real Baseball Nightmare [3]

Answer: Don Sutton

Don began his terror for 15 seasons with the Dodgers, and hit this milestone as an Angel in 1985. He retired with 3574 strikeouts over 23 seasons.

9. Which Major League player had the nickname of 'Whale'?

From Quiz A Real Baseball Nightmare [2]

Answer: Don Newcombe

Newcombe of the Dodgers won the first Cy Young award given out in 1956 for his 27-7 record. He also won the NL MVP in the season for his efforts.

10. Which Kansas City Athletic pitcher set a Major League record by throwing 84-1/3 consecutive innings without giving up a walk?

From Quiz Nightmares for Baseball

Answer: Bill Fischer

Fischer pitched for only nine seasons from 1956-1964. He accomplished nothing major except for this feat, and retired with a 45-58 record. In 1962 as a Kansas City Athletic, he set this mark. In the same season, he also set a mark for throwing 128 innings while walking only eight batters.

11. Besides the New York Yankees, what team did Yogi Berra play for?

From Quiz Not-So-Basic Nightmare Baseball [13]

Answer: New York Mets

A catcher who moved on to manage and coach teams after nineteen seasons competing in the Major Leagues, Berra spent all but one year of his time on the field with the Yankees before taking a spot on the Mets' 1965 line-up. Of the thirteen World Series championships he was a part of across his five-decade span in the sport, only one ended up being with the Mets, who he coached to victory in 1969. The only team he would be affiliated with that wasn't from New York would be the Houston Astros; he coached them for four seasons in the late 1980s.

12. Craig Wilson of the Pittsburgh Pirates hit 7 pinch-hit home runs in 2001. Whose record did he tie?

From Quiz Nightmare Baseball - 86

Answer: Dave Hansen
