Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many times did the Bucs qualify for the playoffs under their first head coach John McKay?

Answer: 3

McKay led the Bucs to the playoffs in 1979, 1981, and 1982, winning the NFC Central division twice, and qualifying as the 7th of 8 NFC teams to make it in the strike shortened 1982 season.
2. The Bucs played in only one tie game in the 20th century. Who was it against?

Answer: Green Bay Packers

This happened on October 12, 1980. Packers kicker Tom Birney missed a 36 yard field goal attempt as time expired, ending the game in a 14-14 tie. The two teams finished the 1980 season tied for last place in the NFC Central at 5-10-1.
3. Who at the end of the century, held the Bucs' records for most rushing yardage in a game, single season, and a career?

Answer: James Wilder

Wilder played for the Bucs from 1981-1989, and rushed for a total of 5,957 yards for the team. He set a team record with 1,544 yards rushing in 1984, and on November 6, 1983, he rushed for a team record 219 yards in a 17-12 win over the Minnesota Vikings.
4. The Bucs scored an average of less than 10 points per game during their first season of 1976?

Answer: True

The expansion Bucs scored only 125 points and were shut-out 5 times. They were even worse offensively the next year, scoring only 103 points and getting shut-out 6 times.
5. Who was the first Buccaneers player to score 4 touchdowns in one game?

Answer: Jimmie Giles

Tight end Jimmie Giles caught 4 TD passes on October 20, 1985, in a 41-38 loss to the Miami Dolphins.
6. In 1999, Dexter Jackson set a Buccaneers record by intercepting 3 passes in one game?

Answer: False

No Bucs player ever intercepted more than 2 passes in a single game during the 20th century.
7. What Bucs QB set a team record with 486 yards passing in one game?

Answer: Doug Williams

Another great individual accomplishment in yet another Bucs loss. Williams accomplished this feat in a 38-30 loss to the Vikings on November 16, 1980.
8. During the 20th century, the Bucs lost more than twice as many games as they won?

Answer: False

It was close, but they weren't quite that bad. The Bucs finished the century with a record of 132-247-1.
9. Which member of the Bucs defense had 2 of the teams 5 sacks, against the Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII?

Answer: Simeon Rice

Led mainly by Rice and MVP safety Dexter Jackson, the Bucs extremely fast defense overwhelmed a solid but aging Raiders offense, sacking QB Rich Gannon 5 times and intercepting him 5 times. Three of the 5 interceptions were returned for touchdowns, a new Super Bowl record.
10. Bucs head coach Jon Gruden once became the youngest coach to win a Super Bowl. How old was he?

Answer: 39

Gruden came pretty close to setting this record even earlier, as he led the Raiders to several successful seasons before leaving the team after the 2001 season. He was also the youngest coach in the NFL at the time of the Super Bowl win.
