Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won Super Bowl XXXVII 48-21 over the Oakland Raiders to finish the 2002-03 season. Where did they finish 10 years earlier, at the end of the 1992 season?

Answer: 5-11 in the basement of NFC Central

The Buccaneers took a long time to get back into contention after an early run of success culminating in a 9-0 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the 1979-80 season in Tampa Stadium (NFC Championship game). The Buccaneers sat in the basement of their division, the NFC Central, for many years.
2. How many interceptions did Vinny Testaverde throw in his second season in Tampa?

Answer: 35

This blew away the record at the time. Vinny cited "color blindness" in a few post game interviews and stated that the Buccaneers orange uniforms were too close to the white uniforms of the opposing teams. There was a billboard erected in Tampa, at the time, with a background in orange that stated, "Vinny thinks this is blue". Vinny Testaverde went on to have a long and illustrious career in the NFL.
3. Who did the Buccaneers meet in their first ever playoff game?

Answer: Philadelphia Eagles

The Bucs do not have a long history in the NFL Playoffs but seem to have met the same teams again and again. After winning their division in 1979, they defeated the Eagles 24-17 in the NFC Divisional Playoff Game before losing at home to the Los Angeles Rams 9-0.

They would meet the Eagles again 20 years later ... in three consecutive playoff years. They lost in the wildcard round in 2000 and 2001 before defeating the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game in 2002. They also lost a rematch to the St. Louis Rams in 1999, 11-6.
4. Which of these Buccaneers coaching chains is chronologically accurate?

Answer: Wyche - Dungy - Gruden

The Bucs seemed to begin to show signs of turning their losing ways around at the end of the Sam Wyche era. This is when Rich McKay got involved and drafted Warren Saap. Dungy finally got them to the playoffs in 1997 and they defeated the Detroit Lions 20-10 before falling 21-7 to Brett Farve and the Packers. John Gruden seemed to get them over the hump in their Super Bowl season of 2002-03.
5. The Bucs joined the NFL in 1976, and lost all 14 games. In 1976 they lost their first 12 games. Who was the team that defeated the Bucs in their 26 game franchise-opening losing streak introduction to the NFL? (The Bucs last loss before they won a game).

Answer: Chicago Bears

The Buccaneers lost their 26th straight game to the Chicago Bears in Tampa, 10-0 and began the 1977 season at 0-12 (this followed their inaugural 1976 season in the AFC West where they endured a 0-14 record). They won the following week 36-14 in New Orleans and then 17-7 in Tampa with another win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
6. Shaun King had been a backup quarter back for the Buccaneers for quite a few years. He even started for them the year they got to the NFC Championship game and lost 11-6 to the St. Louis Rams. Where did he go to college?

Answer: Tulane

Shaun King led the Tulane Green Wave to an 11-0 record in the 1998 season. They did not get a BCS Bowl Bid however.
7. Which of the following statements is not true of their Super Bowl win over the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXVII?

Answer: It was the first Raiders loss in a Super Bowl.

All of the statements above are true except for the fact that the Oakland Raiders had already lost in the Super Bowl once before. The Green Bay Packers defeated them 33-14 in Super Bowl II. They had a 3-1 record coming in, as the Buccaneers were 0-0 in their first trip.
8. Which of the following was a first round pick for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers?

Answer: Bo Jackson

The Buccaneers took Bo Jackson number one overall in the 1984 draft but Bo decided to play baseball with the Kansas City Royals rather than come to Tampa. He eventually signed with the Los Angeles Raiders after the Buccaneers released his rights.
9. In the strike shortened 1982 season, the Buccaneers went to the playoffs?

Answer: True

The Buccaneers met up with the Dallas Cowboys in the post-season for the second season in a row. They lost 30-17 in Dallas a year after being eliminated 38-0 in Dallas the year before.
10. Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl at Raymond James Stadium?

Answer: True

He did so as the quarterback of the Baltimore Ravens in a 34-7 victory over the New York Giants in Tampa only one year removed from six seasons with the Buccaneers. It was a sweet moment for Trent who endured a lot of media hardship during his time in Tampa.
