The generally accepted version is that they were formed in 1865 from a Shinny team who wanted to take up the new game of football.(Shinny or shinney was an early form of hockey). They named themselves Forest after the Forest Recreation or (racecourse)Ground (local opinion is divided on this point), which was the field they first played on.

The City Ground is Forest's 7th home, after various moves around sites near the City. Forest have been at their present home since 1900.
