Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am the great Nolan Ryan. I came so close to my only Cy Young Award chance in 1973 but this pitcher took it instead.

Answer: Jim Palmer

The Baltimore Oriole pitching sensation Palmer had a stellar season in 1973. It was his fourth of eight seasons that Jim was a 20-game winner. All Ryan did was set a new season strikeout record of 383 and go with a 21-16 record. Ryan would not come close to the award again, while Palmer won two more in 1975 and 1976. Both were Hall of Fame inductees, Palmer in 1990 and Ryan in 1999.
2. My name is Babe Ruth. I was an outfielder and won the AL MVP Award in 1923, but due to league restrictions I couldn't win another one for a long time. In 1927 I led the league in home runs, runs, and OBP but someone else took my MVP in the season. This thief was an infielder.

Answer: Lou Gehrig

At no fault of Gehrig, the American League allowed only one MVP per person. The two leagues didn't come to an agreement for the MVP Award until 1931. In 1927 Ruth hit 60 home runs, 158 runs scored, and 192 hits. Gehrig hit 47 home runs with 149 scored on 218 hits. The runner-up for the MVP with Ruth totally out of the picture was Harry Heilmann of the Tigers.
3. Boston's Ted Williams batted for two Triple Crowns in his career. He was robbed in 1949 because another player batted better by .001 which took away Williams' batting title and thus the Triple Crown. Who was this Detroit Tiger?

Answer: George Kell

Williams batted for the Triple Crown in 1942, 1947, and pathetically missed the batting title by less than .001 in 1949. Both Williams and George Kell of the Tigers batted .343 but Kell took the crown. Williams hit 43 home runs with 159 RBIs to fulfill two of the Triple Crown requirements but Kell topped him in batting average. Ted would win two AL MVPs and six batting titles before he retired in 1960.

It would be the only batting title for the third baseman Kell.
4. I am 2016 Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon. I was the only manager in Major League Baseball to lead my team to 100+ wins. This manager stole my fourth Manager of the Year Award.

Answer: Dave Roberts

Maddon led the Cubs to a 103-58 season record. He also took the team to their first World Series title since 1908. The Dodgers won 91 games in the season, and Roberts is mainly given credit for balancing a roster with so many injuries throughout the season. Maddon had previously won the Manager of the Year Award in 2008 and 2011 with Tampa Bay, and 2015 with the Cubs.
5. My name is Dan Quisenberry. I won four consecutive Rolaids Relief Awards from 1982-1985. In 1986 my pitching and saves fell off and I didn't deserve the award, but I wanted it anyway. Who took the award in 1986?

Answer: Dave Righetti

Quisenberry feel way off for the Royals in 1986, but Righetti of the Yankees was there to earn the Rolaids Relief Award himself. Dave was in his seventh season with the Yankees after winning the Rookie of the Year Award. In 1986 he led the league in games finished with 68, an ERA of 2.45 with 46 saves. Righetti would win the award again in 1987 also.
6. From 1907-1919, Ty Cobb could have won 13 consecutive batting titles if not barely be beaten out in 1916 by Tris Speaker, and by .001 average in 1910 by this player.

Answer: Nap Lajoie

Cobb still had an amazing run and the thought of 13 consecutive batting titles can't be comprehended in modern day baseball. Nap Lajoie of the Indians beat Cobb's batting average of .384 to .383. In 1916, Speaker who was also a Cleveland Indian beat Cobb with his .386 to Cobb's .371 average. Ty Cobb batted more than .375 in 11 amazing seasons and retired in the top career spot with his .366 average.
7. From 1957-1961, National League and Braves pitcher Warren Spahn tied or won five consecutive titles for most wins in a season. This player broke his streak and took the award for most wins in 1962.

Answer: Don Drysdale

Spahn either tied or won the most wins title eight times in his career from 1942-1965. Warren won 20+ games an amazing 13 times. Drysdale was in his seventh season with the Dodgers when he went 25-9 in 1962. Don won the Cy Young Award for his efforts. Spahn was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1973, then Drysdale in 1984. Fans with sour grapes say that because Major League Baseball later found the mound at Dodger Stadium to be six inches higher than the rules, Drysdale (and Koufax) would not have won as many games or dominated as much.
8. Oriole third baseman Brooks Robinson, a.k.a. "The Human Vacuum Cleaner" won 16 consecutive Gold Awards at third base from 1960-1975. He was finally dethroned in 1976 by this Detroit Tiger.

Answer: Aurelio Rodriguez

Robinson won the 1964 AL MVP and finished in the top five for the award six times in his 23-season loyal career with Baltimore. It was Rodriguez's only Gold Glove Award in his 17 seasons with the Tigers, Angels, and Yankees. Aurelio retired in 1983 while Robinson was being inducted into the Hall of Fame in the same year.
9. Baseball's king of thieves Rickey Henderson could have won 12 consecutive stolen base crowns if not for this Seattle Mariner who interrupted Henderson's streak in 1987.

Answer: Harold Reynolds

It was Harold's only stolen base title in his 12-season career when he stole 60 in 1987. Henderson was with the Yankees in 1987 and played in only 95 games due to injuries. He stole 41 in the season and finished fourth. After setting a season record with the Athletics in 1982 with his 130 thefts, Rickey retired after 25 seasons in 2003. All his stolen base titles came in the American League.

His streak could have run from 1980-1991 if not for his 1987 limited season.
10. Hall of Famer and Philadelphia Phillie pitcher Robin Roberts led the league in four consecutive seasons by giving up the most home runs in a season from 1954-1957. Which Dodger and former Cy Young winner, who was traded midseason to the Reds in 1958, helped bail out Roberts?

Answer: Don Newcombe

Newcombe won the very first Cy Young Award presented in 1956 for his 27-7 record. Los Angeles traded him midseason to the 1958 Reds in a multi-player trade. Between both teams, Newcombe gave up 31 home runs in the season to tie for the unfortunate title. Johnny Antonelli of the San Francisco Giants also gave up 31 big ones in the season to share the negative title with Newcombe. Roberts would 'come back' and give up the most home runs again in the 1960 season. Robin retired in 1966 while giving up a career record of 505 home runs.

He was a 1976 Hall of Fame inductee.
