Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In ten-pin bowling, what pin is commonly referred to as the "kingpin"?

Answer: 5 pin

It is so named as it is surrounded or "protected" by all the other pins, like a king and his men.
2. Which split is known as "bedposts"?

Answer: 7-10

This split is also known as "goalposts".
3. What is the minimum number of balls required to complete a game of ten pins?

Answer: 11

9 strikes and an open in the 10th is only 11 balls. It would be a shame to open in the 10th, after getting your first 9 strikes.
4. What is the minimum degree of tilt that a bowling pin needs to fall?

Answer: 7.5 degrees

Due to the rounded bottoms, a bowling pin only needs 7.5 degrees of tilt to fall.
5. After your delivery, you leave the 6 and 7 pins, but they are still wobbling. When the pinsetter comes down to reset the pins, it knocks the six pin over. What would you shoot for your spare?

Answer: 6 and 7 pins

According to ABC rule, if a pin is knocked down by the pinsetting equipment, it is to be replaced in its ORIGINAL position, regardless of where it was on the lane when it was knocked down.
6. For a right handed bowler, the ball comes into contact with how many pins in a "Perfect Strike"?

Answer: 4

For a right handed bowler, a "Perfect Strike" ball will only hit the 1, 3, 5, and 9 pins (1, 2, 5, and 8 for a lefty). This will result in all 10 pins going straight back into the pit on an average strength shot. Refer to http://www.amfbowling.co.uk/advanced.htm for more information on the mechanics of a "perfect strike".
7. Which of these splits has been determined by ABC, as the most unlikely to spare?

Answer: 5-7-10

Also known as the "Lily Split", this has been deemed impossible to spare by ABC.
8. From the foul line to the head pin measures how many feet?

Answer: 60

Straight line distance from the foul line to the head pin measures exactly 60 feet, although it's 63 feet to the pit.
9. A new pin was introduced on the pro tour in the spring of 1998, that was heavier and would result in less strikes. What color were these pins?

Answer: Gold

The Gold Pro pins, which were only used in televised finals matches, were 4 ounces heavier than normal pins, which allowed fewer "lucky strikes", as the pros outline at http://www.ncaba.org/bowlmag/archives/9806bkolb.htm.
10. Walter Ray Williams won his 5th PBA Bowler of the Year Award in 1998. He is also a champion at what?

Answer: Horseshoe pitching

Walter Ray's previous PBA titles came in 1986, 1993, '96, '97, and '98. Many are not aware that Williams also owns 6 World Horseshoe Pitching Titles.
