Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 1966 season saw the first NFL team score 70 points in a regular season game. Which team embarrassed the New York Giants 72-41?

Answer: Washington Redskins

It is pretty tough to score 41 points in a game and lose, but the Giants did on November 27, 1966. The Redskins were led by quarterback Sonny Jurgensen, but passed for only 145 yards with three touchdowns. It was the legs of A.D. Whitfield and Bobby Mitchell who provided the ground attack for Washington.

The Redskins scored 24 points in the fourth quarter. Neither team went to the playoffs in the season.
2. Who was the oldest player that played on a team in the 2010 season?

Answer: John Carney

Born on April 20, 1964, Carney was in his 23rd season in the NFL in 2010. He kicked field goals for the New Orleans Saints in the season. At the age of 46, he still made five of six field goals and all three extra points. John was a backup to Saints kicker, Garrett Hartley.
3. Who was the first player in history to earn five Super Bowl rings?

Answer: Charles Haley

Haley played linebacker and defensive end in his 13-season career. He won rings from Super Bowl XXIII and XXIV with the 49ers, then three more with the Cowboys. Dallas' three were Super Bowl XXVII, XXVIII, and XXX. Haley retired in 1999. He was the only player in the 20th century to own five rings.
4. Which 2011 team began their franchise endeavors in Chicago during the early days of the NFL?

Answer: Arizona

The Arizona Cardinals began it all as the Chicago Cardinals in the APFA in 1920. They joined the NFL in 1922 and went 8-3 under head coach Paddy Driscoll. The Cardinals were NFL Champions in 1925 for going 11-2-1 in the season, and were led by head coach and tailback Driscoll.

The franchise would have to wait until 1947 to win another crown. The franchise moved to St. Louis in 1960, then Arizona in 1988.
5. NFL football and Thanksgiving Day has been a cohesive day in time. There were from two to six games played on Thanksgiving Day in the past, until which season schedule changed it to only one game per year?

Answer: 1939

Only one game was seen on Thanksgiving Day in 1939, and the Eagles defeated the Steelers 17-14. The league would continue to play only one game on that day until 1960, when the new American Football League began. One game from the NFL and one game from the AFL would be played until the leagues merged in 1970. From then on, it was two NFL games played on the holiday.
6. Which team won the first regular season game that was played outside of the United States?

Answer: Arizona

The first regular season game played outside of the U.S. was on October 2, 2005. The game was played in Azteca Stadium in Mexico. The Arizona Cardinals defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 31-14. Josh McCown of the Cardinals threw for 385 yards and two touchdowns.

The first pro football game played outside the USA was on November 8, 1926, when the New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Wildcats 28-0 at Maple Leaf Stadium, Toronto, Canada. They played in the rival American Football League. The nine-team AFL folded after one season.
7. Which of these teams in 2008 won their division, after having the worst record in the NFL just one season prior?

Answer: Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins had the worst record in 2007, going 1-15 under head coach Cam Cameron. After Cameron was canned during the offseason, new head coach Tony Sparano would take Miami to a 11-5 record, worthy of winning the AFC East. The Dolphins lost to the Ravens in the playoffs.
8. Who was the first head coach to win three Super Bowls?

Answer: Chuck Noll

Noll was also the first head coach to win four. All his Super Bowl wins were with the Steelers. He took Pittsburgh to Super Bowl IX, X, XIII, and XIV. Chuck retired in 1991 after 23 seasons at the helm of the Steelers.
9. In 1989, a record trade was made that involved 18 players. Who was the primary big name player that caused all this ruckus?

Answer: Hershel Walker

The trade occurred on October 13, midseason 1989. Walker played in Dallas for three seasons from 1986-1988. In 1989, Walker was a Minnesota Viking running back, and the Dallas Cowboys wanted him back at any cost. The trade was made involving 18 players and future draft picks, and Herschel ended up in Dallas for the rest of the season.

As crazy as things go, Walker was a Minnesota Viking again in 1990. He then retired as a Dallas Cowboy in 1997.
10. Who set not only a "Monday Night Football" record, but tied an NFL record in 1996 for kicking seven field goals in one game?

Answer: Chris Boniol

Boniol was a Dallas Cowboy, and the game took place on November 18. The Packers were at the brunt of the Cowboy sting, 21-6, with all 21 points being scored by Boniol's foot.
He tied the record of seven goals set by Rich Karlis, Minnesota vs LA Rams on Nov 5 1989.
