Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the head coach who replaced Bud Grant after the 1983 season, only to lead the team to a (3-13) 1984 season?

Answer: Les Steckel

Steckel was known as a hardcore ex-marine and strong disciplinarian. Apparently that didn't set well with Vikings players who were used to Grant's laid back approach. The Vikings defense gave up a team record 484 points in 1984.
2. Bud Grant returned to coach the Vikings in 1985, helping them improve from (3-13) to (7-9)?

Answer: True

Les Steckel only lasted the 1984 season with the Vikes. Grant returned for one season, and with him the team's morale.
3. What team did the Vikings manhandle 44-10 on the road, in the first round of the 1987 playoffs?

Answer: New Orleans Saints

It was the first ever playoff game for the Saints, and they were not prepared for what hit them.
4. What team that had gone (13-2) during the regular season, was shocked by the Vikings in the second round of the 1987 playoffs?

Answer: San Francisco 49ers

The Vikings beat the 49ers 36-24. They beat the 49ers and Saints on the road in the 1987 playoffs, before falling in the NFC Championship game to the Redskins, 17-10.
5. What Viking had the potential game tying touchdown reception, tipped away from him in the last seconds of the 1987 NFC Championship game?

Answer: Darrin Nelson

The pass from QB Wade Wilson, was tipped away by Redskins cornerback Darrell Green.
6. What running back set a team record with 6818 career rushing yardage?

Answer: Robert Smith

A highly underrated player, Smith broke his own season rushing record with 1,521 yards in 2000. He unfortunately retired after that season, but did so with a team record 6,818 career rushing yards.
7. Fran Tarkenton threw exactly 300 TD passes as a Viking?

Answer: False

Tarkenton threw 342 career TD passes. 239 as a Viking and 103 as a New York Giant.
8. Vikings defensive end Jim Marshall had an outstanding twenty year career, but unfortunately will probably be best known for running the wrong way on a fumble return against which team?

Answer: San Francisco 49ers

October 25,1964, in San Francisco, a day I'm sure Marshall would rather forget, even though his Vikes won the game anyway 27-22. Marshall ran the fumble into his own end zone, then threw the ball into the crowd, ensuring a safety for the 49ers.
9. What team did the Vikings beat in the 1973 NFC Championship Game, earning them a spot in Super Bowl VIII?

Answer: Dallas Cowboys

The Vikings dominated the Cowboys 27-10. Even though the Vikings had a better regular season record than the Cowboys that year, the game was played in Dallas. As strange as it seems, the NFL did not consider home field to be a big advantage until 1975, when they gave home field in the playoffs to the team with the better record. Even the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins played that year's AFC Championship game on the road.
10. What team was the only team to beat the Vikings in the 1998 regular season?

Answer: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Vikes only loss that year was at Tampa Bay 27-24. The Vikings scored an NFL record 556 points that year, and seemed destined for Super Bowl glory before they were knocked off by the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship game, 30-27 in overtime.
